6 FYI The Road to Success Abusiness plan is an essential roadmap to growth and success in the equine business. We have all heard the old adage, If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. The saying can be true in any aspect of life, but it s particularly good advice in the business world. And the first step in embarking on any business venture should be writing a business plan. Without one, your passion, dedication and hard work could be wasted; you could be like a vehicle on a journey to an unknown destination without a roadmap. You might eventually reach your destination, but you may take some lengthy and costly detours along the way. Having a business plan takes your business from a reactive to proactive status. Writing and reviewing your business plan helps you focus and define your purpose, goals, mileposts and accomplishments. It can also help you identify your competitors and target market, making it easier to plan a growth strategy. And, as time goes on, your business plan serves as your ready reference in evaluating the headway you ve made when adjusting your goals and tactics. It also allows you to develop benchmarks to measure your progress, which, in itself, can provide reassurance and self-confidence to spur you on in challenging times. Factors to consider When writing your business plan, you ll want to consider all of the factors involved in your particular business. Here s a list to provide you with a starting point: What product or service will you provide? How will you provide it? What business framework works best for you: sole proprietor, corporation or other? What support personnel or consultants will you need to contract with? What facilities will you need and how will you develop them? At what point could facilities become inadequate in size or scope?.com Classic Equine by Ritchie EZ Fount AUTOMATIC WATERER $380 prize value Installation/hose not included. 7 FYI A business plan is an essential roadmap to growth and success in the equine business. How do you want or need to grow to meet your objectives? How will you allocate your resources to do the most good? What factors will influence whether you buy or lease new assets? How will you market and advertise your product or service? How will you manage the equilibrium of quantity versus quality how will you balance work input and output? How hard are you willing to work? How do you plan to develop and maintain business alliances? What are your expectations for each position in your company s organizational framework? How will you determine whether added work will produce added income or benefits for you and/or your customers? How can each employee be most productive in their position? What factors will contribute to a decision to increase or decrease staff? What differentiates your business from your competitors? What legal documents and procedures does your business require? What will you charge? How and when will you collect payment? What is your cash flow projection? According to your break-even analysis, when will your business be able to cover all expenses and make a profit? What types of technology can streamline your processes? What types of training will help staff perform their duties more effectively? Where do you want your business to be in one year, five years and 10 years? Diane Rice

8 In The Know Surfers Beware! Surf City USA will welcome the world s top 15 bull riders and the best bucking bulls as the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Monster Energy Bulls on the Beach debuts Saturday, Oct. 18, in Huntington Beach, Calif. The oneday event will feature the PBR s best athletes, including reigning PBR World Champion J.B. Mauney and ESPN The Magazine s Baddest Body in Sports, two-time PBR World Champion Bull Bushwacker. The Monster Energy Bulls on the Beach will be a PBR 15/15 Bucking Battle with the top 15-ranked PBR bull riders going head-to-head against the PBR s top 15 bovine athletes for double the regular season points. Points will be very important at this stage, as the Monster Energy Bulls on the Beach takes place just four days prior to the first go-round of the PBR World Finals, to be held Oct in Las Vegas. On Sunday, Oct. 26, the 2014 PBR World Champion will be crowned and presented a $1 million bonus. In addition to extra points to be earned at Huntington Beach, one lucky cowboy will also have an opportunity to win $25,000 for one 8-second ride. Bushwacker, who has successfully bucked off all riders who have challenged him in 2014, has been designated the Bad Boy Mowers Bounty Bull. With only one man having successfully ridden him in five years, the odds seem to be with the 1,650-pound world champion. The Huntington Beach PBR event, which is open to the general public with limited-capacity standing room-only seating, will be aired Sunday, Oct. 19, following the NFL game on CBS Network Television. For more information on the event and behind-the-scenes details, visit I give God the glory. I m very blessed to even be here, so I m just very happy. It s been a long time coming, it seems like, and it took a lot of frustration getting here, but I m so blessed. Robert Fullwood, of Como, Miss., following his win in the Derby Unlimited Amateur at the Cotton Stakes Classic in West Monroe, La., riding LHT Bella Rose.

10 Louise A. Serpa Back in the Day Doc s Oak and Tom Lyons See the Action See more video action at Doc s Oak, pictured with his trainer and owner Tom Lyons, was sired by the legendary Doc Bar and out of Susie s Bay, by Poco Tivio. Bred by Doc Bar s owners, Dr. and Mrs. Stephen Jensen of California, Doc s Oak was a full brother to Doc s Solano and Doc s Marmoset. Lyons, who rode Doc s Marmoset to win the 1973 National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Futurity, purchased Doc s Oak as a yearling. Six months later, he sold half interest in the horse to Phil Yeckel and Homer Denius, but he regained full ownership of the stallion when he was 6. According to Lyons, Doc s Oak, who Lyons showed to a tie for fourth place in the 1976 NCHA Futurity Open finals, was a great-minded athlete, who was a trainer s dream. The horse never had a bad day and would give 100 percent each time he was ridden. Late in November 1975, before the NCHA Futurity, Lyons was working the then 2-year-old Doc s Oak on cows at home, when legendary trainer Greg Ward stopped by to work his Futurity horses. Ward was impressed as he watched Lyons work the horse and asked who was showing the bay stud. Lyons just smiled as he replied, I am, but not until next year! A versatile sire, Doc s Oak, who died in 2003 at the age of 30, sired champion cutting horses as well as a National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity Champion (Sophie s Oak); a National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) then called the California Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion (Doc s Baroque); and a Professional Rodeo Cowboy s Association (PRCA) Calf Roping Horse of the Year (Doc s Desperado). According to Equi-Stat records, as a paternal grandsire, 523 of Doc s Oak sons offspring have won $10,824,076 for average earnings of $20,696. As a maternal grandsire, Doc s Oak s daughters have produced performers who have earned $15,629,963 in the show pen for an average of $16,435.
