2 NW District 4-H Contest Day Saturday, April 8, 2017 Northwest Technology Fairview Contests include Speech, Fashion Revue, Robotics, and Job Readiness and a ATV Skills Contest. Entry fee is $10/ contest and due with registration forms to the Harper County Extension Office by Mon, Mar 20th. All age categories are as of January 1, Information and registration forms available at: Speech Contest & Job Readiness Contest 9:00am registration 9:30am contest Participants who enter Speech cannot enter Job Readiness and visa versa. Prepared Public Speaking (No Illustrated or Props) - Topics can be related to Ag, Current Issues, or Family and Consumer Science. Jr Division (Ages 9-11) Time limit 3-5 minutes; Int Division (Ages 12-14) Time limit 4-6 minutes; and Sr Division (Ages 15 & up) Time limit 5-7 minutes. PowerPoint Presentation (Individual or Team) - Int Division (Ages 12-14) Time limit 5-7 minutes; Sr Division (Ages 15 & up) Time limit 5-7 minutes. Extemporaneous Will draw a topic and will have 30 minutes to research (packets available) and write a speech on the topic provided. Jr Division (Ages 9-11) Time limit 3-5 minutes; Int Division (Ages 12-14) Time limit 4-6 minutes; and Sr Division (Ages 15 & up) Time limit 4-6 minutes. Job Readiness is an individual event which recognizes members who communicate a personal understanding of an ability to perform specific job requirements. All members will compete through written materials and a job interview. Age Categories Intermediate (Ages 12-14) and Advanced (Age 15 & over). Individual may choose one of the following job categories: Services, Home Based Business or Retail/Office. Participants will be evaluated on: Information Folder (Resume, Job Description Sheet, Letter of Application OR Home Based Business Flyer and a completed Job Application Form); Interview; and Follow-up Letter. Robotics Contest - 12:30pm Check-in - 1:00-2:00pm Program & Practice - 2:15pm Competition Participants who enter Robotics cannot enter Fashion Revue or ATV Skills Contest and visa versa. Robotic teams will be 2-6 members per team for all 4-H ages. Each team must furnish their own laptop with EV-3 software and EV-3 Robotics kit. Each team will be given one hour to program and practice the task assigned. Each team will be allowed two attempts to complete the course. Fashion Revue - 1:00pm Garments turned in for construction judging - 2:30pm Contest Participants will construct one garment under their age division. Age Divisions are: Ages 9-10; Ages 11-12; Ages 13-14; and Ages List of garments for age divisions available under Fashion Revue at: ATV Skills Contest - 12:30pm Check-in - 1:00pm Contest Participants must have previously completed an ATV Rider course. Contest will consist of an ID test and 3 riding skills. Teams will be 3 or 4 members with lowest score cropped. Individuals are allowed to compete. No age divisions. Helmets, goggles, and gloves will be provided. Participants must wear long pants, long sleeve shirt, and boots to be eligible to participate 2

3 State 4-H Ambassador Applications Due ELIGIBILITY Any youth currently involved in Oklahoma 4-H who is 13 years of age or older by March 15th, 2017 and still has at least one year of high school remaining is eligible to apply. EXPECTATIONS The State 4-H Ambassador program is a time-intensive program and requires full participation to build relationships with team members, be in communication with 4- H donors and be prepared for State Ambassador events/activities. Applications must be submitted electronically by March 15th, and also by a hard copy post marked before March 16th to Cathy Allen at the State 4-H Office. Applications are available on the State 4-H Ambassador website at: becoming-anambassador State 4-H Record Books & Scholarships Applications Due State 4-H Record Books and 4-H Scholarship applications are due in the Harper County Extension Office by Mon, April 10th. 4-H er must be at least 14 years of age as of the program year entered and no older than 19 years of age. Member applying for OK 4-H Hall of Fame must be 16 as of Jan 1st. Applications are available at: 4-H Key Club Applications Due Membership in the Oklahoma 4-H Key Club is an honor extended only to top 4-H members who possess leadership, loyalty and a sense of responsibility to the total 4-H program. Once 4-H ers become Key Club members they accept the obligation to support the 4-H organization throughout their lives, both financially and with their time. Qualifications for Membership: Must be a 4-H member. Must be at least 15 years old or older on January 1 of the year of application. Must submit completed application form by the published state record book deadline. Must accumulate the minimum number of points (400) on the application form. Must be approved by the responsible county cooperative Extension educator. Must make at least one presentation to a 4-H group about Key Club. Must make at least one presentation to a non-4-h group about the 4- H youth development program. 4-H Key Club Applications are due in the Harper Extension Office by Mon, April 3rd. Application available at: 4-H State Volunteer Conference The 2017 Sate Parent-Volunteer Conference will be held June 24th in Stillwater. The conference theme is 4-H Volunteers: Let the Good Times Grow. Be sure and put this date on your calendar. 5 Turn junk drawer contents into a science experiment Just about every home has one of those drawers. You know, the drawer that holds a bunch of stuff that really does not have a designated space. If you happen to have one of those drawers in your house, you are well on your way to a great project called 4-H Junk Drawer Robotics. Jeff Sallee, Oklahoma 4-H science and technology state specialist with Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension, said this curriculum is a great way for 4-H ers to get their feet wet in the robotics project area. The concept behind this project is to make science, engineering and technology engaging and meaningful to club members, Sallee said. There is a critical need for more scientists and engineers in this county, and activities such as this engage youth in projects that combine nonformal education with design challenges and hands-on, inquiry based learning. Even if your county doesn t have a robotics club, these activities can easily be done at home as a family. Junk Drawer Robotics is comprised of three levels, with each level having a central theme related to robotics design, use, construction and control. The first level s theme is robotic arms, hands and grippers. The second level focuses on moving, power transfer and locomotion. The third level is geared toward the connection between mechanical and electronic elements. Sallee said one of the first activities in level one is building a marshmallow catapult. Many of the items needed for this project can easily be found in your junk drawer. You ll need things like paper clips, craft sticks, straws, rubber bands and cardboard. These are typical things you can find around the home he said. The task for the youth is to plan and design a swinging arm trebuchet-style catapult to launch marshmallows. Throughout the process, the youth will be able to question, share and compare their observations. The great thing about Junk Drawer Robotics is families should not have to go purchase a lot of the materials needed for the various projects. The key to the experiential learning process is that the club members seek out the answers to their questions rather than being given the answers, Sallee said. Therefore, the role of the club leader or adult in charge is to facilitate the learning process. The 4-H Youth Development Program provides science-based programming that has valuable benefits to youth participants. In addition, these programs also give youth the opportunity to engage in a positive youth development setting.
