State Ambassadors The State 4-H Ambassador program is a wonderful opportunity for active 4-H members 13 and older to become involved in 4-H at the state level. Did you know that February 22 is former United States President George Washington s birthday? Washington's birthday, also known as Presidents' Day, is a federal holiday held annually on the third Monday of February. The day honors presidents of the United States, including George Washington. Washington s first term as president was from 1789 to 1793, and his second term from 1793 to Before he became president, he played important roles in the military, leading the American Continental Army to victory over the British in Washington is often seen as the father of the United States and is probably the best known American politician ever. The likeness and name of George Washington can still be seen in many places in the United States. There is the portrait of him and three other American presidents carved into the Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota. His image is also used on the onedollar bill and the quarter-dollar coin. The capital of the United States, Washington D.C., Washington State, and at least three universities are named after him. 2 Page 2 What: Share the Fun, 4-H Adventure Land! Share the Fun C L O V E R When: February 17, 2017 with rehearsal on February 7, 2017 Where: Jenks High School Auditorium, Building 6 Notes: Registration is due January 31 to the 4-H office. Rehearsal is mandatory and will start at 4:00 pm. Rehearsal times are filled on a first come, first served basis. Entry forms are available at the 4-H office or online. Clubs please remember to fill out only one entry form per club. Each club may enter up to five individual acts and three group acts (any combination of small or large groups). Each 4-H member may be in no more than two acts total. Cloverbuds can participate in the Costume Parade and/or as a prop only part in a group act. The event will start with check-in at 5:45 and the program starts at 6:30. Expanding your comfort zone There is no benefit of sticking to that warm and safe zone that is very comfortable. The best way to achieve greatness is getting out of your comfort zone. You will encounter new exciting experiences once you step out of your comfort zone as well as expanding it. Great performers and speakers didn't reach success by staying in their comfort zone. They have spent years expanding their comfort zone to be able to be comfortable in a big crowd. As 4-H ers, leaders, or volunteers we must do the same. We must reach out beyond our comfort zone, even if it's one small step, at each opportunity we can until we are comfortable, then reach out again. If public speaking scares you as much as it scares me then it is crucial to expand your comfort zone to include crowds, or even just a handful of people. Start by taking one step, just one, outside your comfort zone. This might be instead of practicing a presentation in front of your family, do it in front of your friends. Then once you're comfortable there then take another step, then another, then another, until where a speech in front of a crowd is just another day. We all like our comfort zone that's why it's called a comfort zone. But it's necessary to reach out of it and to expand it to achieve success with our goals. 3 2017 Page 3 Spring Livestock show The Tulsa County Spring Livestock show will be held March 2 & 3 in the Ford Truck Arena on the Tulsa State Fairgrounds. Entries for the Spring Livestock Show are due February 15th to the 4-H Office. There will be a $10 cash per head entry fee for meat goats, cattle, sheep and swine due the day of the show. Rules for the upcoming Spring Livestock Show outline specific dress requirements for 4-H members. For sheep, beef, swine and meat goats 4-H members are required to wear a 4-H jacket or a collared shirt with a patch or armband. You can find the complete list of rules in the Spring Livestock Show book which can be picked up at the office or found by clicking here. All registered heifers must have legible tattoo matching registration papers. If not in compliance, females will be shown as a commercial. All swine must have original negative pseudo rabies and brucellosis test results. Premise ID will be required. 4 Page State 4-h record books C L O V E R Who: Tulsa County 4-H ers 13 and over What: 2017 State Record Books When: Due to the 4-H Office by March 27, 2017 Where: OSU Extension Office Notes: In 2016, we had great success with State Record Books! It is that time of year again to begin working on state record books. All Level I and Level II scholarships are $1,200 and can be used at any college or university. There are no changes to the Oklahoma Report Form or Level III application this year. There are some changes to the Level IV scholarship application. You will not have to fill out a News Information Sheet unless you are a finalist. You can find more information about record books by clicking here or visiting 4h.okstate.edu and clicking on the awards tab. Tulsa County State record books are due to the 4-H office with a first draft on March 27. We will be looking at record books and making edits before they are due in April. You will receive your record book back the middle of April to make final edits and the final draft deadline is April 18. Contact Voice meeting What: VOICE Meeting When: Thursday, February 9, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. Who: All 4-H Parents, Volunteers and Ambassadors are invited to attend. Where: OSU Extension Office, 4116 E. 15th, Tulsa, OK Bring: Your favorite winter food! Why: Helps meet volunteer certification requirements! Receive the latest 4-H information. Meet and visit with other volunteers and parents! Your club s representation at all VOICE meetings helps your club become a Gold Banner Club. County Officers will be there to play games and do activities with the kids during the meeting. 5 2017 Discovery unlimited Page 5 What: 2017 Discovery Unlimited When: April 7-8, 2017; Registration is due in Early March. Where: Quapaw, OK Who: 4-H members in the 5th & 6th grade ONLY, however we do need a counselor for this event who must be older than 6th grade. Notes: Registration forms will be available as soon as they are received from the district office. There will be recreation, entertainment, meeting new friends and lots of fun! We will leave the 4-H office on April 7 at 4:00 pm and return April 8 at 5:00 pm (tentative). Letters will be sent to participants the week before the program and transportation will be provided from the office. Fashion Revue Who: All 4-H ers interested in sewing and fashion design What: 2017 Fashion Revue When: April 21, 2017; Registration due April 4th Where: Bixby Community Center. Notes: The Life Skills committee is beginning to work on the 2017 Fashion Revue. Be looking for updates on your and the Tulsa County 4-H Facebook page about registration being available. Garments for the event will be due to the office on April 20, H Camp Counselors Who: 4-H ers that are 14 or over as of January 1, 2017 What: 4-H Camp Counselors When: Camp Held June 5 8, 2017; applications due March 24, training to be held in April Where: The Camp is held at Osage Hills State Park Notes: We are beginning to work on 4-H Camp for the summer and we are needing counselors! If you are interested in being a counselor at 4-H Camp you need to fill out an application which can be picked up by coming to the 4-H office. You must be 14 as of January 1, 2017 to be a counselor. Counselors are responsible for a group of youth at camp and also may be asked to conduct a workshop during camp. This year we will be having two trainings for counselors. 6 Page 6 C L O V E R VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR What: 2017 Volunteer of the Year and Lifetime Volunteer Award When: Nominations are due to the 4-H Office by March 2nd, 2017 Who: Any certified volunteer can be nominated by a club leader, a fellow volunteer, 4-H member or self nomination. Just send an to Clinton or Leslie with your nomination and a short reason why. Notes: The Volunteer of the Year award is for those individuals with less than 10 years of experience and the Lifetime Volunteer Award is for those with an accumulation of 10 or more years experience. The winning Tulsa County nominee(s) will be recognized at the state awards luncheon on June 24, 2017, as part of the State Parent-Volunteer Conference. It is time for our volunteers to toot your own horn or someone else s horn, and be recognized for all your hard work and dedication to Tulsa County 4-H! KIDS & KOWS & MORE T he 12th Annual Kids & Kows & More event is set for February 28th & March 1st, Tulsa County OSU Extension along with Southwest Dairy Farmers, and many others have joined hands to bring this exciting program to Tulsa. This unique, fun and educational experience targets 2nd to 5th grade students. We need volunteers to be group leaders, snack area assistants, session assistants, and to setup and tear down. Setup will take place on February 27th. If you are I nterested in volunteering with this event, or for more information contact Leslie at H THE CAPITOL What: 4-H The Capitol When: April 5th, 2017 Who: Any 4-H club officers, or teen leaders 13 years of age and older, and actively involved in Tulsa County 4-H can attend this event. It is designed to educate youth about the legislative process, and help them interact with their respective elected officials by telling them about the 4-H program. Registration Forms will be posted on the extension website, and will be due by February 15th. As a county we can take up to 8 youth to this event, so get your registrations in early! Notes: Transportation to this event is provided by the Tulsa County 4-H Office. It is typically held at the State Capitol Building in Oklahoma City. Youth and adult volunteers attending this event will depart together from the Extension 5 a.m. on April 5th in order to arrive in Oklahoma City in time for registration. 7 2017 Volunteer Corner The Importance of Setting Goals Page 7 A goal is a simple statement of what one wants to do or learn. This statement defines a task which may be for self improvement, personal gratification or for the good or growth of a group or organization. Skinner states, A goal must be written; otherwise, it is only a wish. He goes on to say, A goal is a projected accomplishment; an objective; an end; the purpose towards which an endeavor is directed. Goals can be long-term or short-term. Long-term goals are the main objective or purpose that one is focused on. Short-term goals are the many smaller steps necessary to breakdown the long-term goal. Goals must be attainable. It must be something the person or people can actually do with the time and resources available. Goals only become reality when the person making or setting the goal take action. Before setting goals make a list of the things you know. Then set your long-term goals based on what you want to learn or do. The short-term goals will be the steps needed to achieve the longterm goal. An example of short-term goals in 4-H project work might include: 1 project a month 1 public speaking opportunity at local 4-H meeting Exhibit in 2 county competitive events Participate in 1 county activity In the book, 22 Leadership Principles Rulon Skinner states, A goal must have a purpose: to construct something, to make money, to beautify or preserve something, to benefit an individual, to benefit a group, for personal satisfaction or pleasure, etc. The purpose needs to be clear to the individual or group members who will perform the task or project. He goes on to say, That a person or group can not accomplish a goal that is not defined or cannot be visualized. Goals need to be put in writing.
