. Monroe Swap Meet was missing something. A lot of us in the hobby have been going to the Spring & Fall swap meets held at Evergreen Fairgrounds in Monroe WA for many years. We have seen it go from over crowded vendors and parking lots to half empty buildings and walk-ways. This year s spring meet was different. I could not quite put my finger on it. There were more vendors than I have seen in many years. Around every corner and down each path, vendors filled the spaces with old junk and newly found treasures okay, that s a bit rich old junk that has been to the swap meet more times than me and treasures only because the price on the old junk was so high, they could have had American Express set up a booth and offer first timers a new Credit Card for swap meet use. Sometimes I think the pricing of used junk is based on what the American Pickers price it on TV. Most of us buy old signs or speed paraphernalia to hang on the wall, not as an investment for our retirement plan. I saw a pair of old Edelbrock valve covers with chipped fins and a broken lip on a table. They were asking $85 US for it???? Who buys a broken valve cover? Who is using old intake manifolds that require hundreds of dollars cleaning and fixing warps etc? Especially a generic one for a small block Chevy, they are all over waiting for a space on your wall. I saw lots of other stuff I almost could not do without but my budget kept me in check. There were some good deals in the car corral if you had a bit of cash with you. This event is worth the day trip with friends whether you need something or not. Oh yeah, I figured out what was missing the rain Monroe with no rain!!!

Take a trip through his garage and you ll see the complete history of our club and Doug in picture, plaques and trophies. Most don t know that Doug was also an expert Plastic model builder, with many incredible dioramas to is credit.
.. h. This year s May Day parade was in full sunshine something that had eluded us the last couple years. Just over 24 cars took part in the parade and car display at the Bradner Sports Field. Then, after our duties were done, we all headed over to the Gazso Homestead for a bar-b-que & refreshments. The kids were treated to a scavenger hunt looking for bugs and so on, horses which stood patiently as the girls brushed them endlessly, and hay rides that even got the adults involved once the refreshments has loosened the fear factor. Lee Gazso & Fran Petty handled the cooking while the rest of the Gazso clan took care of food prep. A big thank you goes out to the Gazso family for hosting this bar-b-que every year and keeping the kids entertained. If you missed this event, mark it down for next year as it truly is a family affair. What used to be our own kids now is our grandkids having a great day involved with hotrods.
This beast is worth a second look and here s why 1) Hosier tires on all four corners gives this ride a stance and look hard to duplicate. 2) The huge blower peeking out through the hood is attached to a large big block that wants to run. 3) The edges of each body panel are painted with a patina style edging. Kool 4) Interior uses a T-bird wrap around back seat with Impala up front. 5) Big meat under the rear show this ride means business. Check this car out if you see it parked, the 25 gallon beer keg in the trunk only hold Premium Gas. This build is all Hotrod! A greasy Buick looking for a challenge. Robin lifting the hood for all to see My wife just opened my door for me It would have been a nice gesture if we had not been going 70 mph!!!
Here s Wes Tyler, one of our American members at Monroe finding a very rare Corvair with the hard to find front engine option. The trunk was converted to a normal truck like other cars of the era. I was told by the owner that this car eats modern muscle cars for lunch
More pictures from Monroe Swap Meet Two more sedans for a good price plus the latest in auto part lighting from carbs to oil cans to hubcaps turned into clocks this lady took the art of jewellery one step farther than bead necklaces. Each piece was clean and would look pretty nice in a den of office location. Below is a local built by Canada Customs & Hot rods in North Vancouver
Father s Day Runs. There are a few going to Qualicum on that weekend for the big Father s Day show. ACROSS THE LINE Locally we have the Gearheads Fathers Day Show & Shine at Bellwood Acres, 6140 Guide Meridian, Lynden, Washington 9AM-3PM Farm setting, Live band, food etc. usually about 140 entries. Let Barb know if you are interested so we can choose a meeting spot and cruise together. Locally Mission is back on, early pancake breakfast with funds going to the local fire dept charity. It is in the same location as the previous shows.
Coastal Swap Meet Summary & Review Well, the swap meet finally arrived last weekend and all of our preparations put to the test. The show started out great, sunshine and more sunshine, the first part of the plan. The second was to sell out, which is almost what we did. I don t have any final numbers as I write this but from what I heard it was a big success. I want to start by thanking everyone in the club who came out and put in their two or four hour shift. This event calls on everyone and everybody answered the call. I need to add a special thanks to those who put in countless hours on the committee, working all through the year and then putting in many hours on the day of the event. The Hawkins Family is one group, Les Shaw, Dan London & Ron Wenger round out the group who work on our behalf. Our club booth was full this year with about 9 or 10 people taking advantage of the chance to clear out come junk for a few bucks. It was nice to see a few of the other clubs taking a page out of our book and having a club stall to promote the club and add to the BS stories we all like to trade. I m sure all of us made a few bucks, some more than others but mostly a good time was had by all. So, once again thank you to all who helped. It doesn t go un-noticed by our club or others. Thank you.

Canada s Best Kept Secret???? I have posted the About Us page from Terry s website. I liked the way he told the story and didn t want to change a thing. Some of us know about this magazine because we have passed his booth at our swap meet, or seen the magazine on the newsstand or riding the ferry system in BC. Some have had their cars featured in the magazine, some even work for Terry by submitting photos and stories about the local cars they shoot. Quite a few of us have had our cars in the Deuce Days Issue Bottom line is this it is a quality magazine Made In Canada by Canadians. I m not actually sure, but I bet it is the longest running Canadian car magazine. So, do me a favour and check out the web site. There are lots of articles and even online content that will keep you interested and coming back. Now, once you get to the site and see my car as the featured online web you might think I m sounding my own horn but that s not the case here. Below is Terry s story in his own words.. check it out, I m sure you will be impressed Dad tried to steer me away from the family business and in a way he succeeded. Instead of turning wrenches I took a shot at turning phrases and became a journalist. After a few years as a sports reporter/photographer for a couple of newspapers, I became the editor of a twice-weekly newspaper in Nanaimo, B.C. In 2001, I began writing a column called, My Car....with Terry Denomme which featured local hotrods, classic cars, street rods, muscle cars, British cars - you name it. It was an instant hit and became syndicated in four Vancouver Island newspapers (Campbell River Courier Islander, Alberni Valley Times, Cowichan Valley Citizen, Harbour City/Oceanside Star). Writing the column did a couple of things; it turned a passion for all things automotive into an obsession and showed me a single weekly column would never do justice to how huge this hobby is in Canada. There are too many great cars with untold stories. When I looked around I saw a landscape dominated by American magazines filled with American cars, American advertising and American opinions. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate and buy those U.S. magazines and at the time there really wasn't a Canadian based hot rod magazine that at least in looks and layout, matched the U.S. literature flooding the market. So, in June of 2005, with the very important blessing of my wife Patty, I launched Canadian Hot Rods & Classics. In October of 2006, after nine issues of too much work and too little sleep, I decided it was
time to ditch the day job and give the magazine my full attention. Yep, I'm that crazy and that passionate about the hobby and I try in each issue to convey that passion to the readers. In 2008 we dropped Classics from the title and became Canadian Hot Rods which just clarified what our focus was from the beginning. Now, I m more of an enthusiast than an expert (though tech and build articles will certainly be guided by professionals). Project Budget Rambler a 1963 Rambler Classic 770 wagon with a SBC and 4-bar rear suspension is our first magazine project car and the second is our 57 Ford faux Sedan Delivery nostalgia gasser. You can follow them step by step each issue of the magazine. With each turn of the wrench and each article written I learn more and more. I've got a lot of catching up to do, but I never enjoyed university or college as much as I enjoy the lessons I learn each night or Saturday afternoon spent tinkering with my cars. So, where does this magazine draw the line when it comes to feature content? Well, as the gearhead in charge, Canadian Hot Rods will certainly reflect my tastes, which include almost anything with wheels but leans towards, traditional rods, muscle cars, street rods and customs. That said, I'd like to let the readers dictate, to some extent, the content of this magazine. This publication welcomes your contributions, stories and photos. Monthly features such as Rearview Mirror and Readers Rides depend on it. In some cases, we'll even pay you to contribute.
