1 August 13 Liberty Leaders Meet August 19 Knox County 4-H members (l to r) Kambryn Miller, Donovan Dooley, Nathan Penn and John Clark attended the Olympics themed 4-H Junior Camp held June 3-6, 2018 at Camp Cedar Crest near Mexico. Youth ages 8-11 from Audrain, Pike, Ralls, Clark, Knox, Lewis and Marion counties took part in the camp. Counselor led workshops included the topics of Olympic Records, Curling, Exploring Creativity, Animals across the World, The Seven Wonders, Olympic Gear and more. Campers learned social, cooperation, teambuilding, and leadership skills through these workshops. The campers also enjoyed swimming and water games. If you have any questions, please contact the Extension office. We would like to continue to showcase art work and photographs at Knox County University of Missouri Extension. Here s what you need to do: Select your favorite photograph (1 per member) taken through your 4-H photography project work. Photo must be 8x10 or 11x14 size. You do not need a frame. The photo is on loan to the University of Missouri Extension office for one year, however we will not be responsible for accidents, losses or damage so please share at your own risk. If you are interested in sharing your work, please bring it to the Extension office no later than Sept. 7th. Notice: End of the 4-H Year Approaching! As we get ready to wrap up another great year in 4-H, please keep in mind that in 4-H we practice the Do- Reflect-Apply Model. This year you have gained knowledge and skills and as we complete the year, we would like all of our members to reflect or think about the experiences and project work you have completed as we look to beginning enrollment on October 1st for the New Year. Completing recognition forms allows members to reflect on what they have accomplished in 4-H this year and be recognized for those efforts. Completing the appropriate State Level Recognition forms allows you to be eligible for state level awards. You must also complete a project record for your projects! Check out knox/2018recognitionforms.aspx for recognition forms or contact the Extension Office. As you complete these forms, be sure to include these three things: 1. What did you do? 2. What did you learn? 3. Why is what you did important to you and others?/what do you plan to do next? These forms take some time to complete, so start on them as soon as you can. If you have questions, please ask ahead of the deadline. The Recognition event has been scheduled for Sunday, October 14, 4-H SPIN Clubs A new option for 4-H membership will soon be available in Knox County. 4-H SPIN clubs are a short-termed 4-H membership where the club meets for five or more sessions over a period of 6 to 8 weeks and are focused around a special interest, or topic such as drama. Members will pay the $20 state dues (plus any project fees) and will be eligible to attend any state level events. We are hopeful that spin club membership will allow both potential members and volunteers with limited time the opportunity to benefit from 4-H membership in a shorter time commitment.

3 Important Shooting Sports Dates September 21-23: Fall Shooting Sports Workshop at Life Change Camp in Clinton, Missouri. State Shoots registration is open at August 18: State Skeet Shoot at Gateway Gun Club in St. Louis. August 25: State Trap Shoot at Missouri Trap Shooters in Linn Creek. August 25-26: Archery NFAA 300 round at Prairie Grove in Columbia. September 8-9: Western Heritage State Shoot in Marshall. September State Shoot all disciplines at various locations 2018 Fall Shooting Sports Certification Workshop This fall s Shooting Sports certification will be held September 21-23, 2018 at Life Change Camp, 351 NE 831 Rd in Clinton, Missouri. The cost of $90.00 includes five meals, overnight lodging (one or two nights), and workshop materials. Registration must be completed in 4-H Online and is limited. Registration will close when a discipline class reaches the maximum participants, or when the camp is full. All registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis when accompanied by the fee. Workshops usually fill up before the deadline, so don t delay! Register ASAP! Check-in Friday, September 21st from 6-7:15 p.m. General session (required for all 1st time participants, optional if currently a 4-H certified Shooting Sports leader) begins at 7:30pm. You must be a current, recognized 4-H Volunteer (volunteer screening, orientation and enrollment completed) to register within 4-H Online. Clover Kids Day at the State Fair A special day for Clover Kids (youth ages 5-7) will be featured in the 4-H Building at the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia, Missouri on Sunday, August 12th from 10am-4pm. Clover kids can display an item they have made, receive a State Fair participation ribbon, give a demonstration, participate in arts/crafts, science and other fun learning activities and see cool 4-H stuff displayed in the building. All Clover Kids and their families are invited to attend this event. Missouri Make It With Wool Contest The Missouri Make It With Wool contest is October 6, Registration is due 9/1/2018. Entry forms can be obtained from the national website All copies with entry fees and swatches need to be sent to Jeanne Shuck, MO MIWW Director, Mexico Rd, Perry, MO She will forward all appropriately to the national contest. State prizes include: sewing notions, thread, a sewing machine for the preteen category, Pendleton wool, and tailoring accessories. Entry fee for MO is the $12.00 for the national contest and $7.00 for each swatch of fabric for testing. The top winner in Junior and Senior age groups will advance to the national competition in New Orleans, LA January 24-26, Wool content needs to be 60% and has to be tested. 4 MU and 4-H Day at Faurot Field Fun times await on September 8th, when 4-Hers across Missouri will gather for Missouri 4-H Day at the Mizzou football game! Be in on a 4-H parade on Faurot Field and then enjoy the game from your great seats on the lower level. Discounted tickets, free t-shirts and a free tailgate meal at the 4-H Center are available to all who sign up. You can get in on the fun with your friends and family by doing two things: first purchase your tickets and then sign up for the tailgate! To get more information and to sign up for the free Missouri 4-H tailgate party, got to See you at the game! 4-H Robotics at the Missouri State Fair 4-H members in the robotics project may participate in the Show-Me Robots at the Missouri State Fair on Sunday, August 12 from 10am-5pm in the Lowell Moheler building on the fairgrounds. There will be several hands on activities around 4-H robotics and other STEM projects, exhibition by FIRST and VEX robotics, and colleges and universities with information about careers in STEM. There is no registration for this event and it would make a good field trip for 4-H robotics project groups. Missouri Cattleman s Foundation 2019 Scholarships Applications are available for the 2019 scholarships from the Missouri Cattleman s Foundation. Applicants must be a Missouri resident and a current paid member of the Missouri Junior Cattleman s Association or their parent/guardian must be a current paid member of the Missouri Cattleman s Association. This scholarship is available to high school seniors or full-time college students and can be found at scholarshipprogram.aspx. Applications must be postmarked by September 30th. America s Farmers Grow Communities Farmer enrollment is now open through November 1st for Monsanto Fund s America s Farmers Grow Communities. Please encourage local farmers to visit to enroll or find a complete list of eligibility requirements. Through this program, local farmers have a chance to direct $2,500 donations to rural non-profit organizations. Missouri 4-H Key Award The Key Award, the highest award a 4-h member can receive, recognizes 4-H members who have achieved significant leadership at the club or group, community and state levels. The Key Award is a prestigious award recognizing 4-H members for their hard work and accomplishments as well as the contributions they have made to the overall 4-H program.
