1 Newsletter KIDS IN CLOVER February/March HELLO 4-H MEMBER! Spring is almost here and it s time to think about all of the 4-H activities that are getting ready to happen. In the newsletter this month is information on 4-H Camp, workshops, 4-H Youth Fair and other events. Please read carefully and share with your family and we hope to see you at many of the Washington County 4-H events! WE ARE MOVING!! Cooperative Extension Service Washington County 211 Progress Avenue Springfield, KY Fax: H CAMP IS OUT OF THIS WORLD Explore all that 4-H Camp has to offer when Washington Co. attends camp May 29 th June 1 st. Join campers from Taylor, LaRue and Russell counties as they experience traditional camp classes such as boating, swimming, crafts, nature, archery and riflery and also explore rocketry and space station rations. See why 4-H Camp is Out of this World! The cost for 4-H Camp is $210. This includes your camp t-shirt. Camp forms and complete fees are due to the extension office by May 1 st because of the earlier camp date this year. Pre-register by April 1 st with your $55 deposit and be entered in a drawing for a $50 gift card. A pre-registration camp form is attached. Those wishing to apply for a camp scholarship may pick up a special scholarship form which will be due back no later than April 13th. In the meantime, start saving your money and be thinking warm thoughts! The New Washington Co. Extension Office The Washington Co. Extension Office will be relocating during the month of March to 245 Corporate Drive. We will be in the industrial park across from the Elizabethtown Community and Technical College campus. If you are in a project club, please listen for One Calls that will announce which location will be used for your March meeting. There will be an open house in April, with the confirmed date advertised in March. Everyone will be invited to come and celebrate our new facility! HORTICULTURE PROJECTS FOR THE KENTUCKY STATE FAIR Horticulture projects will be judged on Friday August 10. at the Extension Office. Please bring your projects in beginning at 8:00 a.m. for judging.

2 4-H Written Communications Contest UP COMING PROJECT CLUB MEETINGS 4-H HOOVES and HORNS and COUNTRY HAM CLUB March 12th, 6:30 p.m., location to be announced. 4-H SHARPHOOTERS CLUB - Will meet Tuesday, March 13th., location to be announced. 4-H YOUNG RIDERS The next club meeting is March 19th 6:30 p.m., location to be announced. 4-H SPURS & FURS CLUB Youth interested in rabbits and poultry should join this club. The club has great plans for this spring and summer. Their next meeting is Tuesday, March 20th, 6:30 p.m., location to be announced. 4-H BEST SEWERS IN TOWN- Members sew every other Saturday, ( 3/10 and 3/24) and are currently finishing their projects for the 4-H Youth Fair and the 4-H Fashion Revue. The Fashion Revue is scheduled for Tuesday, May 8th at Washington Co. Extension Office. Categories: *Songwriting *Poetry (3 lines min/25 line max) * What 4-H Means to Me (min 500 words) *Original Monologue *Press Release *Public Service Announcement -Junior Class: ages 9-13 (ages as of 1/1/18) -Senior Class: ages (ages as of 1/1/18 -Each writing Piece must be original -Entries due Friday, February 23rd -Electric document preferred For more information, contact the Washington County Extension Office 4-H YOUTH FAIR The 4-H Youth Fair is scheduled for Friday, April 27th and Saturday, April 28th. This is our annual event where 4-H members enter their projects to be judged to qualify for the KY State Fair. The projects that receive class champion will go on to the state fair in August. Horticulture and other projects completed this summer will qualify at a special judging that will take place on Friday, August 10th Attached you will find a listing of many of the classes you may enter a project for on April 27th. If you have any questions or need further instruction, please feel free to call the Extension Office. Please check out the schedule for the Youth Fair which will list the times for entering projects, judging and times 4-H TALK MEET During the months of March and April, School 4-H Talk Meet contest and the County wide Talk Meet will be held. Watch the Springfield Sun and the 4-H website at washington for dates and results. 5 PROJECT WORKSHOPS We are excited to offer you the following workshops in March. Most have important deadlines and can only take so many members, so please register as soon as possible to guarantee a spot. pre-register by March 1st. 4-H Veggie Gardening Learn what classes you can enter for the KY state fairand participate in the Veggie Gardening Wheelbarrow Class. The workshop will be Tuesday, March 13th, 5:30-7:00 p.m. at the Washington Co. Extension Office. The cost of the workshop will be $5. The class limit is 12. You must 4-H Butter Cream Cake Decorating Learn how to make butter cream frosting and decorate your own cake! The workshop will be held on Thursday, March 22nd, 3:30-6:30 p.m. at the Washington Co. Extension Office. The cost of the workshop will be $5.00. Class limit is 5. You must pre-register by March 14 th. FIRST TIME BUTTER CREAM CAKE DECORATORS ONLY 4-H Woodworking Work on basic skills to complete a 4-H woodworking kit. The workshop will be Thursday, March 22 nd, 4:30 6:30 p.m. at the Washington Co. Extension Office. The cost is $5. The class limit is 8. You must pre-register by March 14 th. 8 February is 4-H Health Month The 4 th H in the 4-H pledge stands for Health to Better Living and during the month of February, 4-H in Kentucky will celebrate 4-H Health Month. Let s learn how to Snack Smart, Drink Right, and Move More by eating fruits and vegetables for snacks, by making water our beverage of choice, and exploring new ways to increase active time to reach the 60 minutes-a-day recommendation. Now more than ever, it is important to establish healthy habits. Let s start by snacking smart and checking out these suggestions: Warm a flour tortilla to soften, spread with ¼ cup unsweetened applesauce, fold to eat. A half cup raw cauliflower or broccoli chunks dipped in 2 tablespoons reduced-fat ranch-type dressing Bran muffin with a small glass of skim milk Half a bagel topped with a slice of melted, reduced-fat cheese Tortilla rolled up with cheese and salsa Low-fat fruit-flavored yogurt with reduced-fat granola Pasta and steamed veggies, lightly sprinkled with Parmesan cheese Granola bar and an apple Pretzels with honey-flavored mustard, carrot sticks Strawberry-Vanilla Smoothie Kitchen Gear Blender (Adult Needed) 2 Glasses Ingredients 1 1/2 cups fresh (hulled, or frozen strawberries) 3/4 cup plain low fat yogurt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3/4 cup low fat milk, orange juice or water Pinch of kosher salt 1 pitted date or 1/2 banana (if you want to make it a little sweeter) 2 ice cubes using frozen fruit) Instructions 1. Put all the ingredients in the blender. 2. Put the top on tightly. Turn on the blender to medium speed and blend until the mixture is smooth, 30 to 60 seconds. 3. Divide the smoothie equally between the 2 glasses and serve right away, or cover and refrigerate up to 4 hours

9 March is National Nutrition Month Go Further with Food"is the theme for 2018, and its importance is timely for many reasons. Whether it's starting the day off right with a healthy breakfast or fueling before an athletic event, the foods you choose can make a real difference. Preparing your foods to go further, by planning meals and snacks in advance can also help to reduce food loss and waste. This year's theme for National Nutrition Month encourages us to achieve the numerous benefits healthy eating habits offer, but it also urges us to find ways to cut back on food waste. Learning how to manage food resources at home will help you "Go Further with Food", while saving both nutrients and money. Helpful Tips: 1. Include a variety of healthful foods from all of the food groups on a regular basis. 2. Consider the foods you have on hand before buying more at the store. 3. Buy only the amount that can be eaten or frozen within a few days and plan ways to use leftovers later in the week. 4. Be mindful of portion sizes. Eat and drink the amount that s right for you, as MyPlate encourages us to do. 5. Continue to use good food safety practices. 6. Find activities that you enjoy and be physically active most days of the week. Realize the benefits of healthy eating by consulting with a registered dietitian nutritionist.
