We encourage you to complete it with your club and/or club officer team. It is a great tool to give your families and members so they are aware of upcoming activities/ events. They can also look ahead at their upcoming responsibilities for the club as well as the county. 2 Fall Workshops October 14th - Nail Art Workshop Join us for a fun-filled evening learning how to use the elements and principals of art and design to create fun nail art. Cost: $10 October 28th & November 4th Modeling Clay Workshop Mix and prepare homemade clay and mold it into a creation of your own design. Then come back the following week and bring your creating to life with paint and decorations Cost: $5 November 7th Ecobot Workshop In the 4-H Ecobot Challenge, you will build and program a robot to clean up a simulated environmental spill. You will assemble your own Ecobot and discover how it functions and determine what it can do! Cost: Free November 6th, 13th, & 20th Holiday Dessert Workshop Learn how to make fun desserts just in time for the holiday season. One of the things that you will learn how to make is a classic cheesecake! Cost: $30.00 Please call the Extension Office to register for the workshops H Recognition Program Saturday, November 23rd Please join us as we Unmask Your Opportunities at the H Recognition Program. For the first time, we will celebrate the 4-H Year at the Marion County Extension Office. The potluck dinner will begin at 6:00p.m. and the program will start at 7:00p.m. Please plan accordingly and bring the amount that you think your family would eat. We want to be sure that there will be enough to go around. Again this year we will NOT be having a meat furnished. Drinks and tableware will be provided. Junior Master Gardeners Jr. Master Gardeners will meet on Tuesday, October 9th from 6:00 7:30p.m. at the Marion County Extension Office. The program is for all 4th 6th graders with an interest in horticuluture and gardening. Junior Masters Gardeners is a special interest 4-H club. If you are already a member of one 4-H club in Marion County, you do not pay an additional enrollment fee to join the Junior Master Gardeners. All Marion County 4th 6th graders are welcome! New members are welcome; contact Karen Ackley, Master Gardener Coordinator, at or kackley@iastate.edu for more information or to sign up. 2

3 NATIONAL 4-H WEEK OCTOBER 7TH-11TH This is a great time to recruit new members for your clubs. Through out the week the County Council members will be traveling to all of the 4th grade classrooms in Marion County to share about their 4-H experiences. Recruitment is not limited to 4th graders! Please actively recruit anyone in 4th through 12th grades! We have updated Marion County 4-H brochures available at the Extension Office. Call ahead and let us know how many you would like to have. Check out a few ways you can help celebrate National 4-H Week: Create a media event by getting a commitment from every 4-H'er for individual service projects during National 4-H Week. Print their pledges in the newspaper and encourage the members to supply photos of their work. Better yet, send the newspaper photographer to catch the 4-H'ers at work. Have an ice cream social with 4-H'ers, county officials, and volunteers. Showcase youth projects and exhibits. Select a National 4-H Week baby! The first baby born during 4-H Week in the county (if you have a county hospital that delivers) is named the 4-H baby. Get sponsorship from local vendors for diapers, gas to carry baby home, milk/formula, flowers, baby clothes, etc. Give baby a 4-H membership card. Have fortune cookies made, with a 4-H message inside each one. Distribute them in restaurants and in other public places. Cover your county with 4-H posters! Encourage EVERY 4-H'er to bring a 4-H poster to the club meeting. Let a committee of 4-H'ers and volunteers be responsible for distributing signs in every business and public places. Fly a 4-H flag on the town square. Place 4-H promotional placemats in local restaurants. Ask local businesses to put 4-H is Great! Get Into It! on their signs during the week. Have a 4-H Cookie-baking Marathon and deliver cookies to police departments, teachers, school board members, fire departments, and other community services. Give door prizes (4-H pencils, T-Shirts, Blue Tick Tickets, etc.) by drawing completed enrollment cards. Have a phone-a-thon. 4-H'ers phone all the donors and sponsors to say thanks. Have a 4-H pizza party for 4-H'ers caught wearing green during 4-H Week. Advertise a wear-green day. Distribute green and white mints to everyone who wears green that day; or distribute tickets to a fun 4-H event. Have a 4-H Family Hayride. Radio contest: Use questions based on 4-H history and 4-H today. Callers who give correct answers, win a prize. Use 4-H T-Shirts, 4-H pens and pencils, and other promotional trinkets. These are just a few ideas to help promote National 4-H Week! Get creative and come up with a way to celebrate National 4-H that is fun and educational! 4
