1 H Livestck Rule Changes/Updates State Fair & Cunty Fair General Changes Revised 4H 202 Publicatin Iwa 4-H Animal Identificatin, Weighing and Exhibiting Requirements fr Cunty, State and Interstate Shws. ALL animals will be ID ed in 4hOnline thse fr cunty fair and/r state fair, with deadlines as fllws: Feb. 1 fr market beef May 15 th fr all ther animal species July 1 fr rabbits Frequently Asked Questins What abut market (weigh-in) animals that are fr cunty fair ONLY and d nt plan n entering the State Fair; d they need t be ID ed in 4hOnline? Since cunty staff enter the weigh-in data fr market beef, all sheep, and meat gat wethers int 4hOnline, it is up t each cunty if they want t enter the cunty fair nly animals int the system as well as the State Fair animals. ALL animals in all nn-weigh-in species (except pultry) MUST be in 4hOnline by the abve deadlines. This makes sure that if a 4-H er changes their mind abut an animal regarding State Fair eligibility, that animal is already ID ed in 4hOnline. Cunties may make their wn decisin abut animals fr which there is n State fair shw like llamas. 4-H/FFA Identificatin Rule Change 4-H members can nw ID separate animals, but in the same divisin, in bth 4-H and FFA Example: 4-H er culd ID market lambs A, B and C in 4-H and market lambs D, E and F in FFA Example: 4-H er culd ID hrses A, B in 4-H and hrses C, D in FFA State Fair exhibitin rule still applies 4-H er can nly shw in market r breeding divisin in 4-H, and FFA in the ther (i.e. market swine in 4-H, breeding swine in FFA); fr rabbit, hrse, pultry, and dairy (where there are nt breeding and market separatins), yuth cannt exhibit in bth 4-H and FFA Cunty Fair 4-H er culd shw animals A, B as 4-H at cunty fair, then shw animals D, E as FFA at state fair Frequently Asked Questins What if a yuth wants t shw animal A, B as 4-H and animal C, D as FFA in the same cunty? This is acceptable, but the yuth will want t cnfirm with their cunty staff. Mst cunties have ne market lamb shw (bth 4-H and FFA tgether), r ne breeding beef shw, etc. s as lng as the yuth has separate animals ID ed in each rganizatin, that is acceptable. What if a yuth wants t exhibit animal A, B as 4-H in ne cunty, and then animal C, D as FFA in anther cunty? Depending n the cunty, sme d allw yuth t exhibit at multiple cunty fairs; and sme culd allw a yuth t shw 4-H in ne and FFA in anther. Check with yur cunty n this prcedure.

3 Beef Market Heifer/Breeding Heifer ID change If heifer is riginally weighed in as a market heifer, the animal des NOT need t be ID ed again in 4hOnline as a breeding heifer If the heifer des shw breeding instead f market, be sure a breed is designated at weigh-in time in 4hOnline by Feb. 1 r the heifer will nly be eligible as a crssbred. Adding fall-aged heifers t 2013 State Fair shw Brn Sept. 1 Dec. 31 f 2011; als heifers brn in 2012 are eligible Frequently Asked Questins If a 4-H er tags, ID s and weighs in a market heifer in January, but decides t switch and enter that same heifer as breeding at cunty r state fair, des the heifer need t be ID ed again in 4hOnline under Beef, Breeding? N. A heifer is eligible t shw as either market r breeding at the State Fair as lng as she was ID ed in 4hOnline. What abut tatts n heifers? If there is n tatt in a market heifer s ear at weigh-in time, and the 4-H er decides t later shw her as breeding, the heifer will be retinal-scanned at the State Fair t verify ID. The heifer will still have t have a dry tatt in rder t shw in the breeding beef shw. Reminder: Heifers ID ed in 4hOnline under Beef, Breeding MUST have a tatt and breed, and if shwing in a breed class, als a registratin number in 4hOnline by May 15 th. N exceptins. This is because we d nt have a retinal image t verify breeding beef at this time. What if a heifer gets ID ed under the Beef, Market categry by Feb. 1, and then the 4-H er ID s the heifer again under the Beef, Breeding categry in 4hOnline by May 15 th? This is perfectly kay, as it wuld be better t have the heifer in the system twice t make sure the tatt and ther breed infrmatin is in 4hOnline. Yes. Hwever, we wuld strngly encurage families and staff t refer t the nline versin, and print frm there. Thse that have smartphnes, tablets, etc. can reference the nline versin (r save it t the device if n internet access). There will be a limited number f hard cpies printed, but due t csts and thrwing ut remaining cpies when a new versin cmes ut in future years, we encurage cunties t rder 3 5 hard cpies t furnish their hrse judges t have reference t during the shw. What if I have 3 children and nly 2 hrses? Hw d I ID thse? Since there are mre 4-H ers than hrses in the family, siblings culd ID the same hrse. Fr example, Cindy and Sam culd bth ID hrse A, and Sam and Suzie culd bth ID hrse B. What if I have 3 children, but nly wn 2 hrses? Culd I g ut and lease a third r furth hrse? Yes. In this case, yu wuld have enugh hrses and then each 4-H er wuld ID their wn hrse. Siblings culd then NOT be ID ing the same hrse(s). If a 4-H er leases tw hrses, can they als ride a hrse that they wn? Yes, as lng as the leased hrses are riding/driving hrses and NOT halter hrses. Can ne 4-H er ID his/her wned hrse in their cunty, and then a different 4-H er ID that same hrse as leased in anther cunty? N. Each hrse can nly be ID ed by ONE 4-H er. Again, the nly exceptin is if it s within a family with mre 4-H ers than hrses.

5 Meat Gats Remval f the bracing rule; new rule will read as: All gats must have fur feet n the flr in the shw ring at all times. Lifting feet ff the grund r placing n any supprt r altered ring surface is nt acceptable. Exhibitrs will receive ne warning if they are fund lifting r slapping gats. Secnd ffenses will result in autmatic exhibitr disqualificatin frm the 4-H Meat Gat Shw. All meat gat wethers MUST have a 4-H tag in place and retinal images; breeding des must have either a 4-H tag OR permanent tatt, n retinal images are needed fr breeding des If breeding meat gat des attend a weigh-in t get tagged, and are entered in 4hOnline by staff under the weighed-in categry, they MUST have a birthdate; they d nt need t be re-id ed under the nt weighed in categry Rabbit Sheep ALL rabbits eligible fr State Fair must be ID ed in 4hOnline by July 1 This applies t all breeding/fancy/market rabbits All must have a tatt entered in 4hOnline as well ALL State Fair sheep must have a 4-H tag and retinal images Market lambs, cmmercial ewes, purebred breeding ewes

6 Swine State Fair exhibitrs can exhibit a maximum f 3 breeding gilts per breed and a max. f 3 cmmercial gilts Increase maximum weight limit fr market hgs frm 290 t 300 lbs. Discntinuatin f the 4-H Derby Swine shw N reginal state fair swine weigh-ins in the spring All state fair swine nminatins will happen thrugh the cunty ffice All state fair market and breeding swine will still need DNA ear punch tags All swine will still need t be ID ed in 4hOnline by May 15 th Cunties will determine if staff will DNA tag pigs and enter infrmatin int 4hOnline r if the 4-H er will be allwed t btain tags frm cunty ffice, g tag pigs and return DNA samples t cunty ffice Cunties will rder DNA tags and materials frm state 4-H ffice and mail back DNA tag samples in DNA envelpes Frequently Asked Questins Are the swine DNA punch tags nly required fr State Fair 4-H swine? Yes, all State Fair swine; bth market and breeding, but cunties culd purchase and use them n cunty fair swine as well, r culd use a nn-dna tag fr cunty swine nly if they chse. D the DNA tags need t be kept at a certain temperature r used within a certain perid f time? N, they d nt need t be refrigerated r anything, and can be used up as cunties need them. What abut leftver DNA tags and/r DNA envelpes the cunty purchases? Can thse be used the next year? Yes. The cunty will purchase the tags and can use them frm year t year. Hw will the State Fair swine data get entered int 4hOnline? Refer t Optin 1 and Optin 2 belw. Each cunty will select what methd they are cmfrtable with. If my cunty already has a cunty swine weigh-in, can the State Fair swine get DNA tags put in at this same time? Yes, then the cunty staff wuld input the pigs data (tag number, breed, sex, etc.) int 4hOnline. What if there are the same pigs that want t nminate fr bth cunty fair and State Fair? D they need tw tags? N. If a 4-H er wants, say 5 pigs nminated fr bth cunty fair and State Fair entry, they culd just put the DNA tag in nly. 7 Optin #1 Cunty Staff Tags and Inputs State Fair Swine Data int 4hOnline (Swine, weighed-in) animal type Cunty rders sufficient tags, taggers and DNA envelpes frm State 4-H Office by Jan. 1 Cunty either has pigs cme t a cunty ID day (perhaps if the cunty already has a cunty weigh-in) Or, cunty staff may travel ut t DNA tag State Fair pigs Infrmatin fr each pig (tag #, sex, breed, ear ntch (ptinal), etc.) gets written dwn n 106 ID frm Staff cllects DNA tag fees frm 4-H er; 4-H er makes check payable t cunty ffice t reimburse fr tag fees By May 15 th - Staff enters EVERY pig s data fr that 4-H er int 4hOnline under the, Swine (weighed-in) animal type (see image abve) Staff mails all DNA envelpes with samples inside, and signatures btained t State 4-H Office 4-H er then must make actual State Fair entry by July 1. The DNA tagging prcess nly nminates the pigs fr State Fair eligibility. The 4-H member must still make state fair entry by July 1 if they wish t shw at the fair. Optin #2 4-H Families Tag and Input State Fair Swine Data int 4hOnline (Swine, nt weighed in) animal type Cunty rders sufficient tags, taggers and DNA envelpes frm State 4-H Office by Jan. 1 4-H family ges t cunty ffice Requests the # f DNA tags they need (ne fr each pig), # f taggers, and # f DNA envelpes (1 envelpe per 4-H er up t 25 pigs per envelpe) Bth market and breeding swine need t have DNA tags fr State Fair Pays cunty ffice fr tags (checks payable t cunty ffice) 4-H er returns hme Tags each pig Puts DNA sample tag int large envelpe fr all pigs (One envelp per 4-H er) Writes dwn tag numbers n back f DNA envelpe Signs and seals the DNA envelpe and returns taggers and DNA envelpes t cunty ffice by May 15 th 4-H er then inputs all data fr each pig int 4hOnline under Swine (nt weighed in) animal type (tag #, sex, breed, ear ntch, etc.) (see example image abve) Cunty Office signs back f DNA envelpe indicating they received it sealed (if nt sealed, signs IN FRONT OF family member after sealing) Cunty Office mails all large DNA envelpes (signed and with tag samples) fr all 4-H ers in their cunty t State 4-H Office 4-H er then makes actual State Fair entry by July 1 st. ONLY pigs that have DNA tags AND are in 4hOnline by May 15 th are eligible fr State Fair entry and exhibitin
