Weigh-in Tagging for Sheep, Goat and Hogs- May 21 & 23 Discovery Days - May 31 - June 3; Manhattan Fantastic 4-H Camp June 12-15; Rock Spring 4-H Center Douglas County Free Fair - July 24 - August 2 State Wide Livestock and Horse Judging Clinic and Contest Everyone is welcome to participate in this Livestock and Horse Judging Clinic and contest at the Kanas Expocenter Livestock Pavilion on March 19th, 2016 with registration beginning at 12:00pm and events kicking off at 1:00pm. No pre-registration required! Type demonstration on all species. Age Divisions: Official Judges for Livestock 12 & Under No reasons required! 13 & Over Adults Cost-$5.00 per judger Up to four members per team, top three for team scores Cash award to the top youth team in each division and top three youth individuals in each division. This event is sponsored by the Shawnee County 4-H Livestock Committee and Horse Committee. Animal Science Leadership Academy The Kansas State University Animal Sciences Leadership Academy is an intensive four-day educational experience designed to enhance the leadership skills and animal science knowledge of students in 9th through 12th grades. Hosted by the K-State Department of Animal Sciences and Industry and sponsored by the Livestock and Meat Industry Council, the academy s goal is to develop young leaders within the livestock industry and prepare them for a successful future in this field. Students will stay on campus in university housing with event staff for the duration of the event. Twenty students will be accepted for each session. The application process is open to out-of-state students. Two sessions are scheduled to take place June 8-11 and June 29- July 2 in Manhattan. Students may apply for one or both dates as their schedule allows. Go to to download the application. Registration Deadline is April 1, 2016!

2 Sewing Camp Kansas 4-H will again be offering Sewing Camp in 2016! This year s camp will be held at the K-State Manhattan campus, during the Discovery Days time frame: May 31-June 3. Currently, they are seeking applications for Teen Leader Assistants (16-19) and adult volunteers for Sewing Camp. Assistants will be available to assist youth sewers, stay overnight in the residence halls and provide other help as needed. This is a terrific opportunity for teen and adult sewing enthusiasts to share clothing construction knowledge with others, gain leadership experience and tour the Apparel & Textile Design program at Kansas State University. Applications are due by April 1 to Mary Bernhard at mary_bernhardt@cox.net Go to to download the applications. Foods & Nutrition and Food Preservation Judges Training Potential Food Judges, 4-H Project Leaders, Parent and 4-H Youth (12 & up). You are invited to attend a Foods & Nutrition and Food Preservation Judges training on Saturday, April 23, 2016 from 10am-3pm in the Marais des Cygnes Extension District-Paola office. Everyone is asked to take a Baked Good to share and for the group to judge. Does not have be perfect, in fact imperfect would be great. Also you may take a Food Preservation item if you have one and be sure to take your recipe. Registration deadline is April 14, 2016 with a fee of $5.00, which will pay for a light lunch of soup & salad. You may go to to download the registration form. Do you love Science? We will be launching a new STEM program soon, that will allow you to use your science skills and further develop your communication and critical thinking skills as you work as a team to produce a solution to a performance and/or task based challenge. Please, 3dallman@gmail.com to be put on a list for updates Douglas County Fair Schedule The 2016 Douglas County Fair Schedule is updated and available to view at The final version of the fair book will be available later this spring.

3 Shooting Sports Coordinator Needed The Douglas County 4-H Shooting Sports program has an opening for the volunteer position of coordinator. The shooting sports coordinator is a 4-H certified & trained volunteer. The next coordinator training class will be held April 8-10 at Rock Springs 4-H camp. Training will be paid for by the Douglas County 4-H Shooting Sports program. Please contact Darrel Ward (ward.darrel@gmail.com) or Kaitlyn Peine (kpeine@ksu.edu) for additional information Fantastic 4-H Camp Registration is open for 2016 Fantastic 4-H Camp. Fantastic 4-H Camp is a three night, four day camping adventure at the Rock Springs 4-H Center camp will be held June Registration; including full payment, an updated 4-H participation form and online registration, is due April 15. Registration is available at: Questions about 4-H Camp can be directed toward Kaitlyn Peine, 4-H Youth Development Agent, or Nickie Harding, 4-H Program Assistant, at Camp Counselors for Fantastic 4-H Camp We are seeking responsible and energetic teen and adult volunteers to serve as camp counselors. A complete volunteer screening application is required for all camp counselors. Teen volunteers should be at least 15 years old. Camp counselors are also expected to attend camp counselor training at the Johnson County Extension office on Tuesday, June 7 at 6:30 p.m. A camp counselor position description along with the link to the application is available at Applications and a current Volunteer Screening is due by April 15, Questions? Contact Nickie Harding at nharding@ksu.edu or Douglas County 4-H Council Scholarship Program The Douglas County 4-H Council Scholarship Program was established to provide financial assistance to encourage 4-H ers and adult volunteers to attend 4-H related conferences. Conference opportunities include but are not limited to: Campference, Discovery Days, KYLF, Sewing Camp, Photo Adventure Camp, Kansas 4-H Volunteer Forum, adult trainings, etc. The funds used for this program are raised through the annual county fair 4-H concessions stand. The scholarship application is posted at under the Scholarship Application heading. Return the completed form to the Extension office at least 14 days prior to the event registration deadline. 4 2016 Discovery Days Get a Clue and Discover YOU Are You Ready for Discovery Days? Put May 31 - June 3, 2016 on your calendar to be in Manhattan on the K-State campus. This year s theme is Get a Clue and Discover YOU. Discovery Days offers classes and tours about 4-H projects, careers, hobbies, community service and more! You can also share your talents in the Talent Show. Are you ready to dance? Are you ready for some Call Hall ice cream? Are you ready for some great speakers and Discovery Days Night Live and all the other possibilities in your future? This year will feature a mystery for all delegates to investigate and hopefully solve! Discovery Days is a three night, four day overnight camp May 31 June 3. Youth who are at least 13 as of January 1, 2016 are eligible to attend. Delegates experience the dorms on campus, attend workshops gain leadership skills and make new friends. Registration is posted at and click on Register for 4-H Events registration deadline is May 2. Payment and a updated 4-H Participation Form is due to the Douglas County Extension Office by May 2. Please make checks payable to the Douglas County Extension Council. Sewing Camp Come join us for the 5 th annual State 4-H Sewing Camp! This year s Specialty Camp is designed for youth who have mastered basic sewing skills and are ready to challenge themselves to learn new and more advanced skills. The camp offers 4-H members an opportunity to learn and build confidence in the Clothing and Textiles project. Participants should all know the basics with pattern layout/cutting and basic sewing machine operation. Participants will choose their project when they arrive on campus. There will be time for a service learning opportunity again this year and a creative challenge led by Central KS District 4-H member and Project Runway Junior Premier Season participant, Jaxson Metzler. All fabrics, supplies and equipment will be provided for youth to construct their project. Camp will be held May 31-June 3 in Manhattan. Youth ages 13-18( as of Jan. 1, 2016) are eligible to attend. Camp registration fee is $195. Registration details will be ed to all of the age eligible 4-H members as soon as they are posted. Reading Project County READING CLUB meeting will be at 6:00 p.m., April 19 in the Dreher Family 4-H Building. Find out about the reading contest at the fair and more. 5 Spring Livestock Expo The Douglas County 4-H Spring Livestock Expo is scheduled for May 21 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. Questions? Contact Roberta at or Weigh-In and Tagging for Sheep, Swine and Goats May 21 during check-in for the Expo and May 23 from 5:30 p.m.-8:00pm. The Details All market lambs, hogs and goats intended to be shown at the county fair must be tagged by May 23. Each 4-H member can tag up to 5 market animals per specie for the Douglas County Fair. All livestock will be tagged with 4-H EID Tags. The tags will be $4 each. Make an Appointment On Saturday livestock will be weighed and tagged during the appropriate check-in times. Appointments are required for Monday. To schedule an appointment call the Extension office at Tagging Policy for State 4-H Livestock Shows The following policy is regarding tagging livestock after the spring weigh-in and tagging dates. Please note the same policy applies to county fair livestock that lose their tag prior to county fair. Livestock tagged after May 23 will not be eligible to be shown as a market animal at the 2016 Douglas County Fair. Exhibitors purchasing livestock for state shows after the spring tagging date will be required to bring the animal(s) to the Douglas County Extension Office. Exhibitors also have the option to have the tags delivered to their farm by an Extension Agent for a $40 fee. Make checks payable to the Douglas County Extension Council. Either the exhibitor or parent will be responsible for tagging the animal(s) under the supervision of an Extension Agent. An appointment is required.
