2 Before you get started Calf Scramble Winners, you have caught a calf in the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show & Rodeo Calf Scramble. Now it is time to start looking for a beef project. As a winning scrambler you have assumed a yearlong commitment to raise a beef heifer selected personally from a breeder of your choice. Time management, proper feeding and grooming, and hours of work everyday are required of you, the participant. You will have to keep careful records and submit a record book to the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show prior to the 2015 Show. A catch entitles you to an $800 purchase certificate, paid by a generous donation from Elsa State Bank. If you have purchase certificates from Houston or San Antonio, they may be combined with your RGVLS certificate to purchase a beef project. You are required to participate in the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show Junior Beef Show in March As a winner, you assume certain obligations and responsibilities outlined in this booklet upon the receipt of your Purchase Certificate. Review this booklet to prepare yourself for the year and keep it available for easy reference.

3 PURCHASE CERTIFICATES AND RULES FOR THE 2014 SHOW 1. A Purchase Certificate in the amount of $ will be issued to each of the contestants catching a calf. Any breeding heifer project purchased with the certificate MUST be exhibited at the 2015 Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show. 2. A thank you letter must be written to the Scramble Sponsor and submitted to the Show Office. The Show will forward all letters to the Scramble Sponsors. Calf Scramble Certificate will not be issued until the Thank You letter is received by the Show. 3. The animal must be purchased not later than September 1, Beef animal purchased must be a registered female of one of the following breeds and for which the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show has classes: Beefmaster, Brahman, Charolais, Chianina, Maine-Anjou (must be 3/4ths), Red Brangus, Santa Gertrudis (including Star 5 Females), Simbrah, Simmental, or Zebu. The certificate may also be used to purchase a Commercial Heifer. 5. Heifers must have been calved no earlier than January Calf purchased must be approved by the 4-H Club Manager or Agriculture Science Teacher before a check will be issued from the Calf Scramble Fund for payment. 7. The Purchase Certificate should be given to the seller, who is responsible for transferring the registration certificate to the scrambler s name. The seller must send a Bill of Sale (for a Commercial Heifer) or the Original Registration Certification (for registered animals) and the original scramble certificate to the Livestock Show Office by November 1, Payment will not be made to the seller until the above papers are received in the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show Office. The check will be mailed directly to seller upon receipt, in the Livestock Show Office, of the completed certificate and Bill of Sale or Original Registration Certificate in the name of the exhibitor.

4 9. A record book must be maintained for all records of expenses and management of the purchased animal. The Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show will provide guidelines for the Record Book. 10. The Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show Calf Scramble Record Book must be delivered, or mailed, to the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show Office by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 27, Record Books will be judged for the Most Outstanding Record Book. First, Second and Third place record books will be awarded scholarships. Only record books that have included all the required information will be judged. If Record Books are not received in the Livestock Show Office by Friday, February 27, 2015, exhibitor will be ineligible to show their animals in competition. 11. The obligations of the Calf Scramble Program must be met and must be verified by the scrambler s supervisor. If not, the participant will be required to return the $ to the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show Calf Scramble Account. You have a purchase deadline. Your beef project must be purchased no later than September 1, 2014.

5 OFFICIAL RECORD BOOK OBJECTIVE: The objective of the record book is to provide a learning experience that emphasizes and promotes excellence in: animal selection, record keeping, feeding and nutrition requirements, animal health practices, technical knowledge and general livestock husbandry skills. RECORD BOOK GUIDELINES: (DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE END OF THE PROJECT TO BEGIN FILLING OUT THE RECORD BOOK. ALL RECORDS ARE TO BE KEPT FOR THE ENTIRE DURATION OF THE PROJECT.) 1. The following Record Book must be maintained for all records of expenses and management of the purchased animal. The CEA, 4-H Club Manager or AST must supervise the development of the project. 2. RECORD BOOK DEADLINE: The Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show Calf Scramble Record Book must be either delivered or received by mail, to the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show Office, by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 27, Each exhibitor should calculate and verify all information is correct. 4. Additional pictures, essays, descriptions or other supporting details of the project should be included, and are encouraged, at the end of the record book. 5. The information requested in the Record Book is the minimum amount required, and not limited, to complete the Calf Scramble Project. Scrapbook material is encouraged.

6 6. Exhibitors must use the following forms and format when submitting the Record Book. (Sections a j are mandatory; Section k is optional.) a. Cover Page including name and club/chapter b. The animal should be designated in this report by the animal s registered name or breed registration number. This designation should be used throughout the management period for all record keeping purposes. 8 Equipment Expenses All equipment used for your Calf Scramble project must be inventoried and accounted for. Previously existing items; i.e. buildings, trailers, working pens; should be adjusted to reflect the age (or current value) of the item. Any new items purchased should be listed with the purchase price. Copy all receipts for items purchased and include them in the Record Book following this page. If more than one page is required, duplicate this page and carry over the subtotal at the bottom of each page to the next page. The final page should reflect cumulative totals. 9 Feed Expenses Adequate records must be maintained for all feed, grain, protein supplement, minerals, etc. purchased. 10 Animal Health Expenses Proper medical procedures should be provided to maintain the health of the project. Complete the following chart of animal health services. Vaccinations, de-worming, health papers, tattooing, artificial insemination services, medications, and hoof trimming are examples to include. 12 Income Generated From Project It is important to understand the value of your project by maintaining accurate records of how much money your project may generate.
