Without all of your hard work, the Crawford County 4-H program would not be as strong and successful as it is! Special thank you goes out to the volunteers, Youth Committee members, and County Council members who worked hard to get the product sorted so quickly! The top sellers this year are: Ashley & Sara Rosener Schleswig Sharks selling $2,098; Mabel and Ben Langel Aspinwall Achievers selling $1,655; Kaitlyn Bruhn Schleswig Sharks selling $1,435; Kayla and Amber Ragaller Westside 4-H selling $1,239; and Kennedy Eischeid Aspinwall Achievers selling $1,041. These top five families will all receive $50. The top club was the Schleswig Sharks, selling an average of $517 of product per club member. The Schleswig Sharks will receive $75. 2 STATE 4-H YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES Iowa 4-H Youth Conference June Every June, almost 1000 teenagers converge on the campus of Iowa State University for 3 days full of speakers, workshops, mixers, dances, a banquet, and community service activities. If you've completed 8th grade, you're eligible to attend. You don't even have to be in 4-H to attend this conference! You will get to experience campus life and meet new people from across the state! You will be having fun while learning by doing, dancing the nights away, and serving the community. You will get to learn new things to take back to your community and school, and in the process you might even discover something new about yourself! There are opportunities for you to share your talents with the rest of the delegation through small group discussion, the Conference Chorus, and a Talent Show! If you'd like to be part of the team to capture the Conference in photos, join our Iowa 4-H Youth Camera Corps, and bring your camera. We're doing things a little differently this year and you'll get to learn photo skills and put them to work through the workshop series. Please join us in June for the most incredible three days of your life at the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference! Registration is now open and will close June 1. Visit for the registration link. REGIONAL 4-H YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES Southwest Iowa Area 4-H Junior Camp Take a ride on the "WILD" side and mark your calendars to attend Southwest Iowa Area 4-H 5th & 6th Grade Junior Camp, June at the Eastern Nebraska 4-H Camping Center near Gretna. Camp will run from Sunday, June 11 at 3 p.m. until our closing ceremony starting at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 14. Experience the adventure and excitement of four days filled with 4-H camp traditions and favorite activities, including nature hikes, high ropes, zip line, archery/shooting sports, canoeing, camp songs, crafts, swimming, and campfires! Bring a friend with you and make new ones while you are there! The camp will be filled at 80 youth, so you will want to register early before it fills up. Registration Deadline is May 15. Cost for the four day camp is $200.00, if registered before May 15, There is a $25.00 late fee after May 15. No registrations accepted after May 25. Make sure to check with your County Extension Office, many have financial assistance for 4-H members attending camp! 3 REGIONAL 4-H OPPORTUNITIES CONTINUED Regional 4-H Trip to Omaha Region 12 (Crawford, Carroll, Greene, Guthrie, Audubon and Shelby Counties) youth staff are hosting a Regional 4-H Youth overnight trip to Omaha June Youth in grades 6-8 will be traveling on a charter bus to the Henry Doorly Zoo, AIM Brain Exchange, and SkyZone Trampoline Park. AIM Brain Exchange will challenge tech skills in various STEM fields including cybersecurity, game design, robotics, sewable circuits, and more! At Henry Doorly Zoo, we will be Snoozing under the Sea in Scott Aquarium. Registration forms are available at the Crawford County Extension Office and can be sent in the mail/ as requested. Registration deadline is Monday, May 15 and space is limited to the first 50 youth who register! The cost for this trip is $150 which includes 3 meals, overnight stay in the aquarium, and transportation. Financial assistance is available through the Crawford County Extension Office. Financial aid applications are due May 15. SCHOLARSHIPS AND RECOGNITION Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame The Iowa 4-H Youth Development Program and the Iowa 4-H Foundation are sponsoring the 15th Annual 4-H Hall of Fame at the Iowa State Fair to recognize volunteers and staff who have exhibited outstanding service to the 4-H program. Each year, Crawford County selects an individual or couple to honor with this award. If you know someone who has given their time to help further 4-H in Crawford County and should be honored, please do not hesitate and nominate them. Nominations are due by April 20. Contact Paige to obtain the nomination form by calling the office at (712) or by at pamenell@iastate.edu Winner s Circle Scholarships (IFAA) College-bound Iowa youth active in 4-H and/or FFA livestock and agricultural projects and current undergraduate students may apply for scholarships available from the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement (IFAA). Applications and additional information are available by visiting the Sale of Champions section of the Iowa State Fair s website ( or by calling Harold Hodson at or Linda Weldon at Selection will be based on level of 4-H/FFA involvement in livestock and other agricultural project work, livestock exhibition and/or judging, scholarship, leadership and career plans. Applications for current undergraduate students must be postmarked by April 1, and applications for incoming freshmen must be postmarked by May 1. 4 COUNTY 4-H YOUTH INFORMATION County Fair Theme This year s theme for the 2017 Crawford County Fair will be Start Your Future Here. The theme will be used for the Booth Decorating contest as well as one of the four themes for Communication 4-H posters (Department 105, Class 10503). Member in Good Standing Friendly reminder! To be considered a member in good standing, youth must attend a minimum of 4 regular club meetings throughout the 4-H year. If members do not attend the 4 club meetings, you will not be considered a member in good standing and will not be eligible to participate in the 2017 Crawford County Fair. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Crawford County Extension Office. County Council Spaghetti Supper The Crawford County 4-H Council will be hosting a Spaghetti Supper on Sunday, April 23, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison. Serving times will be from 5:00-7:30 pm. You will have choice of spaghetti with meat sauce or chicken alfredo with a side of garlic bread and a variety of dessert bars. This supper will be a free will donation for the County Council youth. Money raised will go directly towards the County Council to help with a Leadership Retreat as well as workshops they will host for county 4-H ers. We hope to see you all there to help support the County Council! Iowa 4-H/International Harvester Award Program We re pleased to announce a new partnership between Iowa 4-H and the International Harvester Collectors Club, Chapter 5. The IH Collectors Club has agreed to provide up to $6000 in awards to Iowa 4-H members who restore IH/Farmall tractors, farm equipment, and other items associated with the International Harvester brand family. Award/grant recipients will be selected from Iowa 4-H Exhibitors at the Iowa State Fair. Individual awards will likely range from $250 to $ H members with eligible exhibits (restored IH/Farmall tractors, farm equipment) selected for the Iowa State Fair will complete a special award application. The application form will include member project goals, detailed description of what was done (including expenses), before and after photos of the equipment restored, and a description of what was learned. A panel of state fair judges will review the applications, evaluate the restored items, and make the award selections. Initial emphasis will be on restored tractors and farm equipment. Secondary emphasis will be on stationary engines, Cub Cadet tractors, and other items under the IH brand. Geographic dispersion throughout the state of Iowa will be a consideration in final award selection. Awards will be presented at a recognition MISSION program at the Iowa STATEMENT State Fair (date TBD). PAGE 4

5 LIVESTOCK FSQA Training/Testing; YQCA FSQA Training will be held on Monday, April 17 at 9 am and on Saturday, April 29 at 1 pm. The training is required for any youth member in grades 4-6 as well as Clover Kids. You can also attend the training if you do not wish to test out of your age division. Both trainings will be held at the Extension Office. FSQA Training and Testing must be completed by all members exhibiting animals that can be sold for meat (beef, sheep, swine, goats, rabbits, poultry, and bucket bottle calves). Call the Extension Office today at to schedule a testing time or to sign up for the training! YQCA will be the only quality assurance training accepted starting in YQCA is now live! For anyone who is interested in completing their quality assurance training this way, please contact Paige at the Extension Office for more information. Livestock ID Deadline in 4hOnline ALL animals MUST be ID ed in 4hOnline by May 15 except for Rabbits and Poultry. Rabbits must be ID ed in 4hOnline by July 1. Animals, with the exception of Horses, entered in 4hOnline last year will need to be re-activated to be recognized for this year. This deadline applies to animals eligible for the Crawford County Fair, Iowa State Fair, and AKSARBEN. Animals not identified by May 15 will not be eligible to exhibit in any 4-H show including the Crawford County Fair. Sheep and Goat Weigh-In Market lamb and goat weigh-in will be Saturday, April 29 starting at 9:00 AM and continue through 11:00 AM. The weigh-in will take place in the scale house at the Crawford County Fairgrounds. All market lambs and market goats that will show at any 4-H fair must be weighed in at this time. This includes county only market goats as we are having a rate of gain class this year. Retinal images will be taken for all sheep (market and breeding commercial and purebred) and all goats (market and breeding) that will be shown at the Iowa State Fair and/or AKSARBEN. Animals must be brought to weigh-in to be retinal imaged. The fee for retinal imaging is $5 per head. DNA hair samples are no longer required for market lambs or market meat goats wanting to nominate for eligibility at AKSARBEN. Dairy goats do not need to weigh-in unless a wether is being entered in the market show. Broiler Orders: Due May 1! Broilers will be ordered from Duncan s Poultry. All broiler orders are due to the Extension Office by May 1. Simply submit an order by calling the Extension Office at with the number of broilers you would like to purchase. The minimum number for an order is 50 birds. Prices for Cockeral Broilers for this year are $1.49/ chick. Clover Kids members have the opportunity to raise and show broilers and will need to submit an MISSION STATEMENT order by May 1. Delivery date for broilers is anticipated to be May 31. These are the only birds that are allowed to show in the Broiler Pen of Three Show during the Crawford County Fair. PAGE 5

6 LIVESTOCK CONTINUED Swine Identification All swine that will be shown at the Crawford County Fair must be identified by ear tag and ear notch before May 15 in 4hOnline. Ear notching guides are available at the Crawford County Extension Office. If you are questioning what an ear notch reads, feel free to a picture to Paige at pamenell@iastate.edu. For biosecurity reasons, you need to pick up tags at the Extension Office and tag your own pigs before May 15. Tags are $1.50 each and available at the Crawford County Extension Office. You may borrow a tagger, however, it must be disinfected in bleach before returning it to the Extension Office. Additionally, DNA tags for swine who will be exhibited at the Iowa State Fair can be purchased and picked up at the Extension Office. Tags are $8.00 each and we ask that you call ahead to reserve your tags. If you are planning to exhibit swine at AKSARBEN, we will need to pull hairs for DNA. Call the Extension Office at to schedule a time. DNA samples must be pulled no later than June 15 and the cost is $5 per animal. Please follow these photo examples of how to tag your swine projects. When ID ing swine projects in 4hOnline, please include the 3 letters on the tag followed by the 4 numbers. Example: JJN9052 Mandatory Horse Exhibitor Meeting & Training Sessions A mandatory meeting for all horse exhibitors will be held Tuesday, May 2 starting at 7:00 PM at the Crawford County Extension and Outreach Office in Denison. This meeting is required for anyone who will be exhibiting a horse project at the 2017 Crawford County Fair. In addition to the mandatory meeting, it will be required that exhibitors attend three training sessions to be able to exhibit at the 2017 Crawford County Fair. Training sessions will be held every Tuesday starting May 23 and ending July 11, except for July 4, at the Expo Building on the Crawford County Fairgrounds. Adair County Horse Clinic June 10 at 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Adair County Fair Grounds, Greenfield IA. Helmet required for all youth 18 & under.
