Once again you have represented the state of Ohio and the Simmental breed very well. We are looking forward to the sale season ahead, don t forget to get out there and support our Ohio breeders. OSA Board of Trustees would like to invite all members of the OSA to participation in this 6th Annual joint fall sale with the Ohio Angus OSA Board of Trustees ********* Association. FARM SCIENCE REVIEW The OSA will spend the 18th through the 20th of September in London at the Farm Science Review promoting the breed to folks from all across our state. Come visit the Ohio Simmental Association tent at 648 Swine Ave. We will have a different set of cattle displayed each day. The 2017 sale was a success and we are looking forward to working with our members to continue that momentum into this year. We focused on bringing together the best set of bred cows, heifers and pairs along with some of the top end open heifers that our breeders have to offer. Also in the sale will be featured genetic lots, such as pregnancies, embryos and flushes. Dan Wells, the OAA Secretary/Fieldman is the primary contact for the sale again this year and will be handling all the sale management responsibilities. 2 Sales Talk Contest JUNIOR NEWS The OJSA is Selling tickets for a Fan and Stand to continue to raise money for their Memorial Day show and other events that they would like to host in the future. We are also currently working on plans for the 2019 Memorial Day Classic and we will be going to West Virginia and the Hall Family will be serving as our host. Darcy Howser The full Results will be in the next copy of the Register Steers Champion DISQUALIFIED - It was brought to the OSA Board of Trustees that there was an issue with this animals registration papers. After further investigation it was found that the claims that the papers were false were correct and so the OSA board took action and disqualified the animal. It was found that the family involved was not involved in the paper tampering so no action was taken against the junior member. Darcy Howser PEEWEE Division Overall Winner Grady Mitchem 2018 Queen Katie Storey 2018 Princess Kate Liggett 2018 Eastern and NorthCentral Regional Results Simmental Jr. Nationals Minneapolis, MN The Members of the Ohio Junior Simmental Association spent the week of July 9 thru July 15 in Minneapolis, MN at the 38 th Annual American Junior Simmental Association National Junior show. Ohio had multiple participants in the week of contest, events and of they had with them many head of awesome Simmental cattle to show at the end of the week against a record head of cattle. These Ohio competed with a record breaking number of other young people from all over the country in many different contest that help the juniors learn more about their cattle and the industry. The full Results will be in the next copy of the Register The members had a great time at the show and like always it is so much fun to make more friends and learn from each other Junior Nationals are going to be held in Louisville, KY and the Ohio are going to be there and ready to compete. 4 Junior Show The OSA Board would like to again share the program for supporting our junior members that participate in this great program to promote Ohio born and raised cattle in the show ring. This new Simmental Bonus Program will apply to both the Ohio Beef Expo show and the Ohio State Fair. Our new guidelines for breed bonus pay outs are as follows: - If you are a current member of the Ohio Junior Simmental Association then you will receive an additional $100 for your Best of the Buckeye top placing animal. - If you are a current member of the Ohio Junior Simmental Association and you purchased your placing animal from a current Ohio Simmental Association member then you will receive an additional $150 for your Best of the Buckeye top placing animal. Champion Influenced Bull Davis Farms For the 2019 Ohio State Fair we are working through the issues that the AJSA National Classic will be the same week as the breed shows at the state fair and we will keep the membership updated as to how all that will be handled to make sure that our juniors might be able to do both shows. Breed Update The OSA Board choose to collect DNA samples on the Champ and Res Simmental Steers at the due to the ongoing issues this past year in the BEST program and our own state show with steers that have fake papers. Your board is trying to make sure that kids and families are being sold quality Simmental gentices. ****************** 2019 Eastern Spring Classic Simmental Sale at the Ohio Beef Expo. Once again it is time to start thinking about what you might have to consign to the Ohio Beef Expo and the 2019 Eastern Spring Classic Simmental Sale. Next year the sale will be on Saturday, March 16 th, with a start time of 2:00pm When you are looking through those cattle that you might offer please keep in mind that we are always looking for more Breds, Cow/calf pairs, Pregnancies and Fall opens. Remember that this year there are going to be some changes so please study the rules below and contact the OSA or DP Sales if you have any questions. Expo Rules for 2019 All half-blood and higher Simmental cattle, genetic lots and resulting calves of genetic lots, registered with the ASA be permitted to sell at the Ohio Beef Expo. All animals will have to comply with any other OBE rules to be eligible to sell. All lots will be need to be test free of all genetic defects by February 1st each year. To enter a Bull in the sale you must also enter an eligible female. The female must show up and sell or the OSA will charge you an extra fee on that bull of $200 plus the $100 nomination that you must pay for any scratched lot after the catalog is printed or if you do not enter a heifer at all it is a total fee of $300. All animals will be tattooed before coming to the check in chute. If they are not we will do it right there in the chute and charge a $50 per head fee that will be taken from your settlement check. If you refuse to have the OSA board do it in chute you will be cut from the sale, no exceptions. 6 Cattle Kid If you give a kid a calf, he will want a halter to go with it. You'll buy the best halter you can find and then he will probably want a bucket and a show stick and some combs too. When he realizes he can't carry all these things with his own two hands, he will want a show box. Then he will spend hours begging you to go out in the barn to work with his calf, halter, and show stick. Even though you just wanna sit on the couch and watch TV. He will insist. And his insistence will win! When you go out in the barn to wash, comb, blow, and walk. He will not want to go back in the house for dinner and will swear that even at dusk there is enough light to continue working his calf! Next the barn will not be enough and he will want to go the show to see how he can compete while wearing his new show shirt and starched jeans! Once he gets to the show he will get dirty setting up and will be happy! He will probably smile and laugh! Once he is all dirty and enjoys the way the work feels he will want to learn how to fit in the heat of the summer and the cold of the winter! When he goes to shows then he wants friends to sit at the stalls with. When a boy gets a new show shirt, he will want jeans and boots and a belt and a hat to go with it! And a TEAM!!! Then life as you know it will end! There will be no more lazy weekends. You will see more sunrises than you ever thought possible! Every spare minute of your time will be spent hauling buckets, calves, equipment, and crazy kids all over the place to cattle shows! getting dirty. So dirty you will learn a whole new way to do laundry! Like going to the car wash! His smile will grow bigger and bigger! And each year that he works his calves, he will get better and better. And his love for the cattle, and confidence in himself will grow right along with his Cinch shirt size! Then he might try to be a FITTER, a SHOWMAN, a HERDSMAN, or a BREEDER. Because cattle taught him he can be anything he wants! And you will be there the day he wins his first Grand Champion and wins his showmanship class! And he will make you proud! So proud you will get him a hug and the Shorthorn Lassie gives him a banner! And right before your eyes, your little kid will be transformed into a cattleman who set aside his toy barn one day long ago simply because you gave him a calf and a bucket, show stick, show box, and a starched western shirt to go with it! When you give a kid a calf you gave him a talent, and hope, a passion, a dream, and friends and a new family. A place to learn about life, room to grow up as a person where he can push the limit, and have bravery, courage, and learn about LIFE and memories. And he will have all these things simply because you gave a kid a calf and a halter! Then one day many years from now... he will be in his pasture and that old cow will walk up to him. He will rub her head and realize instantly that when you gave that kid a calf you also gave him a childhood that he would never forget! And he will hug you, and your eyes may leak!
