2 Record Keeping Tip of the Month Are you looking for new ideas to enhance your project experience and incorporate Citizenship, Communication, and Leadership activities into your project? Check out the Sample Ideas for Communication, Citizenship, and Leadership Activities at The opportunities are endless for project activities. Don t forget to record the activities you did in your project area for your record book! Clover Kids Movie Day The Cass County Youth Council will be hosting a Clover Kids Movie Day for all Clover Kids on Sunday, March 9 th from 1:30-3:30 PM at the Cass County Community Center. Attendees will enjoy popcorn and snacks, watch The Lorax and do a craft related to the movie. Bring a comfy pillow or blanket to use during the movie! Please RSVP to the Extension Office by March 5 th to attend the Clover Kids Movie Day. Endowment Pancake Supper Who: Anyone who loves pancakes or 4-H or both What: The annual Endowment Pancake Supper to support 4-H When: March 20, 2014 from 5-7 PM Where: Cass County Community Center The money raised at this pancake supper is used to offset the Program Development Fee charged to all 4-H ers across the state. If we did not have this Endowment, 4-H would cost $30 for every member in Cass County each year. Clubs will be asked to work shifts, as well as donate an item(s) for the silent auction. The cost is $6. Children 6 and under can eat for $4. Please encourage friends, family members and neighbors to come out on March 20 th to support the Cass County 4-H Program! 4-H Mardi Gras 4-H Mardi Gras is scheduled for March 23, 2014 from 2-4 PM at the Cass County Community Center. Each club who wishes to participate must submit their club activity to the Extension Office by March 3. Don t forget to be creative with your Mardi Gras game or activity! Please remember, everyone who attends Mardi Gras must pay 50 cents at the door. Tickets are 10 cents each. Please encourage all your friends and family to attend. This event raises money for each club and is also a great low-cost opportunity for families to have fun and support 4-H. Two Liter Pop Bottles Needed Do you have any empty clear two liter, rinsed, pop bottles sitting around? Donate them to the Extension Office to use in upcoming STEM programming. 3 FSQA Training Who: All Cass County Swine and Market Beef exhibitors are required to be FSQA certified. Iowa State Fair 4-H exhibitors showing beef, swine, sheep and dairy (dairy cattle and dairy goat), meat goat, rabbit and poultry at the must be certified. All other food animal exhibitors are encouraged to attend to learn more about their responsibility to produce safe food. What: FSQA Test Out (5 PM) or FSQA Training (6 PM) When: March 4 the Armstrong Research Farm; April 1 the Cass County Community Center; or June 7 th at Animal Science Day Camp (1 year training certification given at this event, no testing available). Testing is based on grade. Youth in grades 4-6 must attend an approved FSQA training each year. Youth in grades 7-9 will have the option of attending a training every year or completing a test which will certify them until they reach the 10 th grade. Youth in grades will have the option of attending a training every year, or completing a test which will certify them until they turn 20. Swine Weigh-in Who: All Cass County Fair Swine Exhibitors for 2014 When: April 5 from 8-11 AM; all families who are in line by 11 AM will be allowed to weigh-in Where: Cass County Fairgrounds; all exhibitors that wish to bring swine to the Cass County Fair or Iowa State Fair for 2014 must weigh-in. Cost: Eartags are $1/head. Please stop by the Extension Office before weigh-in to purchase 4-H tags. Please bring pigs already tagged and eat notched. There is an 80lb maximum weight. There is no off-site weighing. All pigs must weigh at the fairgrounds, on the same scale. For biosecurity reasons, we ask anyone who has home raised pigs, to come to weigh-in at 8 AM and anyone who has purchased their pigs less than a week before weigh-in to come closer to 11 AM. The owner of the pigs will be the only people allowed to sort, restrain and weigh their pigs. Please wear clean clothes & footwear to weigh-in. If pigs show sickness before weigh-in, please do not bring them to be weighed. If you have any questions about weigh-in procedures, please contact the Extension Office or Swine Superintendent, Stacie Euken. State Fair Superintendent Needed We are searching for an adult to provide positive youth development and to focus on the State Fair Display at County Fair. This individual will coordinate the static projects that are selected for State Fair and set up the State Fair Display area in the Community Center. Please submit ideas or share your personal interest with Beth at Poultry Broiler Information County Fair will be here before we know it! If you are interested in the Market Broiler class at the county fair, please contact Sue McDuff by April 25 th to place your order on your broilers. The Poultry Committee recommends you order at least six birds per exhibitor. 4 2014 5th & 6th Grade 4-H Junior Camp Take a ride on the "WILD" side and mark on your calendars to attend the 5th & 6th Grade Junior Camp for Regions 12, 17 & 18, June 8-11 at the Iowa 4-H Camping Center near Madrid, Iowa. Experience the adventure and excitement of four days filled with 4-H camp traditions and favorite activities, including nature hikes, creek stomping, wall climbing, canoeing, camp songs, swimming, outdoor camping basics, and campfires! Learn to create cool crafts that work great as 4-H working exhibits. Bring a friend with you or make new ones! Camp will run from Sunday, June 8 at 3 PM until closing ceremony starting at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June H camps are open to all youth, so bring a friend to share the experience! Registration deadline is May 23. Cost for the four day camp will be $185. The Cass County Endowment offers scholarships to offset the costs of attending camps. Contact the Extension Office for more information about the scholarship. Visit for more information about the Junior 4-H Camp. Endowment Scholarships Attention 4-H Seniors! The Cass County Endowment Committee is offering two, $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors. If you have been involved in 4-H for at least five years and are planning to pursue a level of higher education, this scholarship is for you! Applications are due to the Extension Office by April 1. Contact the Cass County Extension office for more information and to receive the scholarship application. why Science Afterschool Program What: Exploring Ecosystems after school program. Location: Atlantic Middle School Science Lab Day & Time: Tuesdays 3:30 to 4:45 PM Session Schedule: Ecosystems: March 25 thru May 20 Registration Deadline: Please register by March 21 to attend Exploring Ecosystems are progressive sessions which will include hands on exploration of plant & animal life, ecosystems & the environment. 4-6 grade participants will design and build a live terrarium, ecosystem and observe environmental effects. Clover Kid County Fair Activities The Youth Action Committee, Clover Kid Committee, and Fairboard have worked very hard to put together two great activities for Clover Kids at the Cass County Fair. For the 2014 Cass County Fair, Clover Kids will have the option to participate in the Clover Kids Showcase and/or the Clover Kids Animal Show. These events are non-competitive and will provide an opportunity for the Clover Kid to tell about their project to a caring adult. Each Clover Kid should participate in at least half of the Clover Kid activities (group & county activities) to participate in County Fair. 5 Clover Kids Fair Showcase 1. Open to all Clover Kids in Kindergarten through 3rd grade in Cass County. 2. Clover Kids will have the opportunity to discuss their showcase items with a caring adult as items are entered. 3. There is a limit of five showcase items entered by a Clover Kid. All items must be made by the Clover Kid under adult supervision. Items may be made at home, in school, at a group meeting, at daycare, or at camp. 4. Showcase items may be entered on Thursday, July 24 during the assigned time. 5. All showcase items will receive a participation ribbon; no premium money will be given for these items. 6. All showcase items will be on display at the Cass County Fair until exhibits are released. Items not picked up at the fairgrounds will be available for pick-up at the Cass Extension Office during normal office hours. 7. Cass County Extension and the Cass County Fairboard will use diligence to ensure the safety of all items entered at the Cass County Fair; however, we are not responsible for damage or loss by fire, theft, etc. 8. Showcase items may be in any of the following categories: Class A: Animals Showcase items related to all species and types of animals. The actual animal may not be brought to the fair at this event. Class B: Creative Arts Showcase items related to art, photography, and music. Class C: Agriculture and Natural Resources Showcase items related to plants, agriculture, and the environment. Notice: Due to the risk of bringing live plants to the county fair, you will be totally responsible for the care of your plant(s) while they are at the fair. Class D: Family and Consumer Science Showcase items related to food, clothing, or home decorating. Sewn or home-crafted items can be included in this class. Class E: Personal Development Showcase items related to, or created by the child, such as stories, poems, etc. Class F: Science, Engineering, and Technology Showcase items related to science, engineering, technology, or items designed and built by the child, such as wood items. Clover Kids Animal Show 1. Open to all Clover Kids in Kindergarten through 3rd grade in Cass County. Animals must be pre-entered through the Clover Kid leader by July Clover Kids will have the opportunity to show the audience their animal and tell a caring adult about their animal. 3. Clover Kids Animal Show animals are only allowed on the fairground during the entry and show time. Entry of animal will take place 30 minutes before the start of the show. 4. All animals must come properly restrained or contained. Appropriate examples include on a leash or in a box, halter, cage, or bowl. All animals must be clean and groomed. 5. Clover Kids and animals must be supervised by an adult at all times. The adult is responsible for both the Clover Kid and animal. Each exhibitor is responsible for the care of his or her animal in partnership with a caring adult. 6. Clover Kid must be accompanied by a senior level 4-H member to help them while in the show area. Each Clover Kid exhibitor is responsible for finding their own senior level 4-H helper. 7. Only one animal is allowed to be shown by a Clover Kid. Continued to next page

6 8. All animals must be free of disease. Check official health rules in the fairbook. 9. All species of animals must follow fair rules and species specific health requirements as stated in the fairbook. 10. Bucket/bottle animals must be purchased or raised and in possession of the child. Any newborn or orphaned calf - steer or heifer - dairy or beef - purebred or crossbred, can be a part of this project. Bull calves will be allowed at the fair for this show. 11. Animals cannot exceed 200 pounds. 12. Calves, lambs, or goats must be bucket or bottle fed; no nursing permitted. 13. All poultry must originate from flocks or hatcheries that have a pullorum-typhoid clean rating given by the official state agency of the National Poultry Improvement Plan or another qualifying state agency of the state of origin, or be tested negative for pullorum-typhoid within 30 days prior to exhibition. Testing will be offered, free of charge, by authorized testers, on July 19th, 6:00-8:00 PM. Any birds without current testing paper work or NPIP papers, will not be allowed to participate. 14. Record keeping forms will need to be filled out prior to the show day and are available through the Clover Kid Leader or at the Cass County Extension Office. The record keeping forms must be turned in at the time of entry on the day of the show. 15. Children will be asked questions regarding: Care and management of raising the animal. Handling the animal. General health and condition of the animal and child s knowledge of the project. Appropriate record keeping. 16. Any female animal in season cannot be shown. 17. This is a non-competitive event. Participants will receive a participation ribbon; no premium money will be given. 18. Clover Kids may show animals in the following classes: Class A: Cats Class B: Dogs Class C: Rabbits, Guinea Pigs Class C: Gerbils, Hamsters, Mice, Rats Class G: Turtles, Fish Class I: Birds Class J: Bucket/Bottle Calf Class K: Bucket/Bottle Lamb Class L: Bucket/Bottle Goat Class M: Poultry
