Failure to do so by 9:00am will result in exclusion from the race. Competitors must check in with their whole team. Individual check in will not be taken. What To Bring: Comfortable footwear (preferably trainers or runners). Appropriate clothing depending on the weather (activewear, tights, SKINS, leggings, shorts or track suit pants are popular). Hats, sunglasses & sunscreen to protect yourselves from the sun. 2
Water (hydration packs) and snacks to keep you going throughout the event. Your own detailed maps of the Melbourne CBD and surrounding areas, map case or a plastic cover for the map (in case it is wet). A map will NOT be provided to teams. Smart Phone (team captains must have the phone with them and on at all times) Small amount of cash Pens, highlighters and markers Small backpack, bag or small carry case. Digital camera (A smart phone can be used as a camera) THE GREAT PURSUIT The Great Pursuit is an Amazing Race style urban adventure race that takes teams all around the Melbourne CBD. It is all about having fun and working together as a team as you race around the Melbourne CBD completing various challenges and tasks using ONLY foot or public transport. It is very strategic as careful planning is required at the start of the event to solve all the clues and map out the course for the race. (You want to avoid wasting time backtracking). The aim of the Great Pursuit is to try and complete all OR as many of the stages (Pursuit, Challenge & Collect) as you can in the quickest time possible (before 12:15pm). Once all the stages have been completed, teams can then make their way to the finish location. There is no set course. The stages can be completed in any order! Great Pursuit Race Bib Each time a team has successfully visited or completed a stage, the team captain must get their Great Pursuit Race bib stamped for that stage as evidence that the team has completed the stage. A team s progress will be stamped on the captain s bib. Stages There will be 3 different types of stages encountered during the Great Pursuit. - Pursuit Stage - Challenge Stage - Collect Stage - Teams will be given a clue sheet with all the stages listed on the sheet at the start of the race. Teams will have to solve the clues to work out the destination for each of the stages. Some will be easy, some will be a little bit harder. Pursuit Stage 3 Pursuit Stages Teams should try and complete all 3 Pursuit Stages. A Pursuit Stage is a stage in which teams will have to visit a location as indicated on the Pursuit Clue Sheet. Not all the locations are easy to find, and often, teams will have to decipher clues to work out the exact location of a Pursuit Stage. When teams arrive at a Pursuit Stage, they must find the control punch at that location and stamp their Race Bib. Challenge Stage 4 Challenge Stages Teams should try and complete all 4 Challenge Stages. A Challenge Stage is a stage in which the team must complete a task or activity when they arrive at a location. Each Challenge Stage has an opening time in which the stage must be visited and completed. Failure to do so will result in the stage being missed or not completed. The opening times will be listed on the Pursuit Clue Sheet on the day of the race. All Challenge Stages will be supervised by officials. When a team has successfully completed a Challenge Stage, the official will stamp the team s Pursuit Race Bib. At each Challenge Stage the team will receive one of three possible cards: DECISION Otherwise also known as a DETOUR, it is a choice between two different ways to accomplish a goal or reach a destination. On the surface, one may seem easy but involves some sort of twist; the other may seem difficult 3
but in the end may be the quicker choice. If a team starts one task and finds it too difficult, they may elect to do the other task BUT must first see and advise the race official that they are changing tasks! If the team cannot finish either task, then they may elect to skip the challenge and incur a time penalty. OBSTACLE A task in which a certain number or all team members of the team must participate in and complete in order to complete the Stage (this will be determined at the Obstacle point when the team receives their task). There are no alternative tasks and the team member(s) must perform the task successfully to complete the Obstacle. If the team cannot finish the task, then they may elect to skip this challenge and incur a time penalty. INTERSECTION Team may encounter an Intersection. An Intersection requires each team to pair up with a certain number of other teams and perform the challenge together. Should there be no other teams present when a given team arrives at a Challenge Stage, they must wait there until another team arrives, though they do not have to partner with that team and can opt to wait for another team instead. If the teams cannot finish the task, then they may elect to skip this challenge and incur a time penalty. Collect Stage 4 Collect Stages Teams should try and complete all 4 Collect Stages. A Collect Stage may involve collecting the answer to a question, or purchasing a specific item. Items collected from the Collect Stages must be handed in to officials at the end of the race as evidence that the Collect Stages have been completed successfully. Race Finish All teams must complete all the stages and make their way to the finish location before 12:15pm for race presentations. Failure to finish the race by 12:15pm will result in time penalties. Time Penalties If teams cannot complete all the stages, then penalty time will be added for any of the Stages missed as outlined below. - Incomplete or missed Pursuit Stage 30 minute penalty - Incomplete or missed 45 minute penalty Challenge Stage - Incomplete or missed Collect Stage 30 minute penalty - Arriving after 12:15pm at the Finish Location 30 minute time penalty for every 15 minutes past 12:15pm Clue Sheet Teams are allowed to use the internet or smart phone to help solve the clue sheet. Teams are encouraged to use their smart phones to help solve the clues. Retiring If any team needs to retire from the race, please contact the Uplift Events emergency mobile numbers provided on the clue sheet. No team or team member is forced to finish the event, or continue racing if they need to leave or are feeling unwell, tired or fatigued. This number can also be used in case of any emergencies, or if a team gets lost and requires assistance. TEAM UNIFORM Part of the fun and spirit of the event is not only the race itself but the team uniforms! Teams are encouraged to come dressed in a team uniform on the day of the event (entirely optional). Many competitors do take the extra effort to make spectacular team uniforms. The past events have seen some colourful and entertaining team uniforms on display. So get cracking on designing your uniforms! 4
PREPARATION This Great Pursuit has been designed to cater to most fitness levels, however there may be a lot of walking depending on how you and your team wish to run the event. It can be done at your own pace, but there is the option to use Melbourne s free trams in the free tram zone for teams that may not be super fit. Uplift Events does advise however, to do some preparation leading up to the event. Some walking during your lunch break or around the block a few times a week leading up to the event will assist with the preparation to help accustom your body to the event, and reduce the chance of any injury during the event. Uplift Events would also advise you to warm up and have a 5-10 minute stretch after you have arrived at the starting/meeting location (mentioned above) and had your attendance checked off. USEFUL INFORMATION Competitors should bring any maps of the Melbourne CBD that they think may assist them or give them an advantage on the day. Please avoid anything heavy like bringing a whole Melway. The event will take teams all over the Melbourne CBD area, so please study tram/train/bus routes and times of the Melbourne CBD area as it may give teams the advantage on race day. Once teams have solved the clues on the clue sheet, it is a good idea to mark out or highlight the locations on the race map so that you can plan the most efficient route. You may want to bring water and snacks to keep you going throughout the event or be prepared to buy water along the way. The contact person / captain for each team must bring their mobile phone and be contactable during the race for safety reasons and in case of any emergencies. Please also wear sunscreen as you may be spending a considerable amount of time outdoors. You may want to have a friend or family member at home that you can call, in case you need a Google search on a particular clue if you don t have a smart phone. Take note of the opening times for the Challenge Stages. Very important that teams do NOT miss any of the Challenge Stages. Some teams may want to plan their course around the opening times so that they do NOT miss out on any of the challenge stages. Each team will receive (to be returned at the end of the race) o The Great Pursuit Clue Sheet Also provided (which teams can keep) o A Great Pursuit Race Bib x 2 (one of the bibs will be used to record the number of stages completed) o Medals for the winning team Feel free to bring your own backpack to carry drinks, snacks etc. if required. However, we do NOT advise on bringing large or heavy backpacks. Sometimes public transport may not always be the quickest option. In other instances, it may be your only option. Officials at Challenge Stages can be identified and found by their red Uplift Events uniform. Some challenges are first come, first served challenges, so teams need to sometimes decide on the best route and order they plan to complete challenges to avoid queues. Please also be patient and respectful to other teams when queuing for some of the challenges, as there are many teams competing in the event. Read the CLUE sheet carefully! All competitors must first sign a waiver form before competing in the race. Competitors who do NOT submit or sign the waiver form prior to the commencement of the race will be excluded from the event. Please see page 8 for a copy of the waiver form for competitors to print out and sign. Please bring a copy of this form and have it completed and signed prior to the start of the race. This form will have to be handed in as part of check in. Remember to have fun! 5
SAFETY & RULES No dangerous behaviour will be tolerated. Any person who is witnessed to be behaving dangerously (potential to harm themselves or people around them) will be issued a warning. Repeat behaviour will result in disqualification from the race. No running is permitted in areas where there is a high density of the general public, or any locations that are indoors. Teams who are caught running by an official will be issued with a warning. Repeat offenders will be issued with a time penalty and possible disqualification from the race Pedestrian road rules must be followed at all times for everyone s safety. Offenders will be issued with a warning, and repeat offenders will be issued with a time penalty and possible disqualification from the race. Everything you do must be legal. Uplift Events Race Bibs must be worn and visible at all times so that you and your team can be identified by officials and venue staff at the various locations. Please also be careful when walking or running, in some areas the surface may be slippery, bumpy or uneven. Especially take care in gardens and parks. Look out for slips, trips and falls, the event will take us all around the Melbourne CBD, so make sure you watch where you are going. No discrimination, sexual harassment or threatening behaviour is permitted to other competitors, Uplift Events staff or the general public. Any person(s) or team(s) witnessed to be breaking any of these rules will be issued with a warning. If the behaviour continues, they will be disqualified from the race. No cars, motorbikes, push bikes (including Bike Share), taxis, Uber, scooters or any other form of motorised transport are allowed. Any team caught driving or using a taxi will be disqualified. Teams can only travel by foot or tram (within the free tram zone) in the map below. If teams wish to use trams to travel outside the free tram zone, or use other forms of public transport (i.e. buses or trains), please ensure they have a valid Myki card or money to buy a ticket. 6
Teams must stick together. If a team is found to be more than 50 metres apart, they will incur a time penalty. Teams must complete all the stages and arrive at the finish by 12:15pm for race presentations. Failure to get here by 12:15pm will result in a time penalty. Please do not litter.
