1 Volume 7 Issue 2 Cross country Individual Club Standings Sue once again tops the standings or the sixth year on the trot Sue Cox has topped the female veterans crosscountry standings. Although she didn t run in the final race at Hinckley, her nearest rival Marie Playford missed the last two races, leaving Sue to finish on top with a six point gap. Sue wasn t the only member of the Cox family to achieve success in this year s standings. Son Oli won the senior male title, despite only running three of the five races. However his two wins helped him finish 3 points ahead of second placed Ady Cave. Meanwhile daughter Emma Marvin won the female senior title for the third year in the last four. Sue Cox has become ladies vets winner for the sixth year running. Newsletter for Desford Striders Running Club Andrew Cole used to dominate the senior category, however a couple of years ago he passed over that unavoidable threshold and into the vets. Well this year he took the category by storm and finished a huge 13 points ahead of Simon Shuttlewood, having won two of the races and come second in two. March 2006 Male vets A. Cole 72 S. Well done and many thanks to everybody who took part and helped with transport, results, support etc. etc. Some of the more astute may have noticed a change in the some of the senior men s scores. This is because I incorrectly had Andrew Hurd in the male vets! (Sorry Andrew). If any of our Junior Striders ran, please let me know.
2 Page 2 Derby Runner Cross-country League League season finishes with a win for Nigel at Hinckley he league season finished with a win for Strider s second claim runner, Nigel Stirk. It was his first turnout in our colours this season and he finished the Bosworth course over three-quarters of a minute over the second placed runner. Also making her cross-country debut for the club was new member Laura Pocock. She was first Strider s lady home in 39th place. The numbers were down for the Shobnal race, with just fifteen hearty soles making the trek out to Burton-upon-Trent. However numbers increased for the Hinckley race with twenty Striders running. The League season is now at an end, and as I write there is only one race to go, a relay held at Grace Dieu at the beginning of March. Hopefully results and a report next month. The two courses, 12K for men and 6K for women were marked out on Newbold Comyn, and sources close to The NewStrider (thanks Ady Cave!) say that it was a particularly tough one this year. Ady was obviously still delirious the next day, as he was heard to complain that his small cows were rigid, saying My calves are as stiff as a board this morning! Back to the race! The runners were set off on one small lap of the Comyn and just as they Paul Goodchild homing in on an opponent at the Midlands cross-country Championship race at Newbold Comyn. were all thinking how easy that race had been, were taken on a further three, much larger and much more gruelling ones. These were inclusive of a man made testing (as quoted in the Leicester Mercury) hill and a sludge pit of a stream (as quoted by Ady Cave!). Apparently most of this ended up all over his face. In regard to the results, I have included them on this page for you to have a read of, and despite Eula, June and Izzy, (who I am pleased to see has thrown herself right into representing the club at races and at the same time enjoying it to I hope!) we were unfortunately one lady short of a full team. The men however had enough for a counting team, and were 35th of 39th, scoring 1743 points, an improvement on last year s tally of Hopefully those who took part enjoyed themselves and there s the usual open invitation to send your recollections in (not matter how small!) for your club-mates to enjoy. The Sludge Pit before Ady went through it! Ady showing Dave Lawrie a clean pair of heels (and face by the looks of it!)
4 Page 4 Having your cake and eating it! Many thanks to Simon Shuttlewood for the following report on the tough, but fun? Charnwood Hills race. s usual I'd left it too long to enter this race!! With just over a week to go, when asked by a couple of fellow Striders, "Are you running the Bowline?" My answer was "Oh yes I'll get it sorted out tonight". As expected... there it was on the Bowline Climbing Club web site 'RACE FULL - No More Entries - NO entries on the day'. Oh well...at least I tried!! Three days later, while enjoying the comfortable hospitality of the Freezing Damp Field 'changing rooms' in Burton On Trent, (and seriously contemplating a move to Wreake Runners, right there and then, because they had arrived hours earlier and erected a luxurious two man plastic toilet tent...and they had CAKE..in tins...for the finish...lucky b*&$% &s. This was tactics...oh yes they knew how to upset us ). I heard a shout of "Does anyone want a place in the Charnwood Hills Race next week?". It was Sue Cox..and NO.. I didn't use swear words to tell her to go away; even though the smug "we've got cake..and warm changing facilities", grinning faces of Wreake were getting to us all. After speaking to one of the organisers and swapping with an injured runner, I was in! On the weekend of the race the weather had got a bit warmer than the previous week, so conditions were perfect for running. We started at ten o'clock from Anstey Martin High School, which brought back memories, as this was my school...oh lets see...must be 20 years ago now. The first section took the route of our 2 mile school cross country, which I used to hate, and never would have thought I'd be back all these years later...running 12 miles for fun!!!...i remember Duncan being at the school too...but he was a lot older than me. A very muddy section was next. Just at the end of Cropston reservoir, one runner was stuck nearly to his thigh, serves him right for trying to run straight through the middle! Simon, seen in action on firmer ground, enjoyed a nostalgic trip back to his old school. Charnwood Hills At least another two had lost shoes. Oh! What rotten luck!!.. Through the gate and into Bradgate...over the top and out through Old John car park...drop down to Woodhouse Eaves via Lingdale golf coarse, over the road and sharp left to catch a first look at the dreaded BROOMBRIGGS HILL...a real killer. Nobody seemed to mind waiting their turn to get over the stile at the top!!...next was more mud and a uphill field section before dropping down to the road and into the Beacon..sharp left then a steady uphill mile to the top of Beacon Hill!!...Well it does say on the internet "This is not a fun run"...still...we runners love pushing ourselves to the limit...much like being stripped to the waist in a freezing field in Burton!! Time Pos Oli Cox Simon Shuttlewood Paul Goodchild Paul Goddard Jules Toone Sue Cox Steph Pandit Francis Breen Ady Cave Liz Cave (Total of 365 runners 291 men & 74 ladies) My guess is, this must be about half way, as we head down through the trees on a path with lots of hazardous mud patches and tree roots, ending at Beacon's lower car park. Oh dear...what a shame...no Ice Cream Van...I could have murdered a ninty-nine cornet. The second half was almost a reverse of the route out, with the golf coarse uphill section being the hardest. Into Bradgate Park and a welcome long downhill back to the ruins and the bridge. Tip toeing around the mud bath...back around the ploughed field and home. This is a long tough run, anyone who's done it will agree...today s route, slightly longer than previous years, was measured by a couple of runners with GPS at 13.8 miles (a bit like our leg of the 'Round Leicester Relay' eh Phil ) I can't remember enjoying a run quite as much as this one for a very long time, well organised and taking a route through some of the best countryside anywhere...and..back in the school hall...free CAKE! Top Run. Many Thanks to the Cox's for getting me in... I'll try not to leave it so late next year.! Simon
5 Page 5 Leicestershire Road Running League. Strider s senior men find life hard in Div 1 he first three races of the new season have proved tough for the Strider s senior team. We ve had one or two of our more slight of foot runners unavailable and as a result they are finding life hard going. They are currently lying second from bottom, already 5 points behind Birstall and safety. On the other hand the vets have a very similar points cushion in their division. They are in sixth position and have fifth placed Stilton in their sights. The ladies division has been extended quite considerably with the inclusion of a B team now possible. So far 27 teams have got on the scoreboard, with our own ladies currently lying 18th. The second race at Ashby saw the debuts of our latest members Tom and Laura Pocock. They both had very good runs, finishing in and respectively. Latest tables and results listed.
