3 FROM THE RACE STAFF Greetings, and welcome to the inaugural LIGHTHOUSE 100 and LIGHTHOUSE 50 ultramarathons!! The race staff has been working extremely hard over the course of the year to ensure that your race experience is one of if not the best ultras you ever run! Our gorgeous lakeside course features some of Northern Michigan s most iconic lakes and towns, as well as finishing on the 45 th parallel... exactly half-way between the North Pole and the Equator! Our goal with the race is simple: to give you the best and most personalized race weekend experience possible. From custom bib numbers to fully-supported aid stations to an awesome post-race party, we want you to have a blast and also challenge yourselves to new heights during the race! As race weekend approaches, if there is anything we can do to help you or questions we can answer, please do not hesitate to contact us! Thank you for being a part of the LIGHTHOUSE 100, and we look forward to seeing you on june 9 th! Best, Dave Krupski and the entire race management team 3

4 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS june 9, 2017 (Friday): Optional pre-race 2-3 mile "shake-out" run with Dave at 1:00 p.m., at the start line (bayfront park, Petoskey). This is your chance to ask any last-minute questions, preview a few miles of the course, and -- most-importantly -- relieve a little of the pre-race anxiety/butterflies! June 9, 2017 (Friday): Mandatory pre-race meeting for lighthouse 100 runners. Packet pick-up begins at 3:00 p.m. at the start line in petoskey. The mandatory pre-race meeting will start promptly at 5:00 p.m. lighthouse 50 runners are strongly encouraged to attend; they also, however, have the option of attending a "race day" pre-race meeting at the 50-mile start line on Saturday morning (see below). June 9, 2017 (Friday): At the conclusion of the pre-race meeting, we encourage everyone who can to join us at tap 30 pourhouse in Petoskey, for a last supper before your big race! June 10, 2017 (Saturday): All runners must be present, check-in with race officials, and be ready to run, no later than 5:30 a.m., at the start line, right on the jetty leading to the Petoskey lighthouse in bayfront park. June 10, 2017 (Saturday): Start of the lighthouse 100, 6:00 a.m.!! June 10, 2017 (Saturday): Bus to the start line for uncrewed lighthouse 50 runners departs from the peninsula township government offices (13235 center rd., traverse city, mi 49686), 10:00 am, sharp!! June 10, 2017 (Saturday): Mandatory pre-race meeting for lighthouse 50 runners, commencing at 11:30 a.m., for those who did not attend the Friday night meeting in petoskey. The meeting will take place at the 50-mile start line (corner of n.w. torch lake rd. and Campbell rd.) All runners who did attend the Friday meeting must check-in at the start line by 11:30 a.m. (Race starts at 12:00 p.m.) June 11, 2017 (Sunday): Post-race celebration / awards ceremony at peninsula grill, noon. (14091 center rd., traverse city 49686). The shuttle for uncrewed 100-mile runners will depart for the start line at 1:15 p.m. 4

5 RULES OVERVIEW: TOP FIVE RULES The race website details all of the race rules, and we expect all of them to be followed. Here, however, are 5 rules for which we will have a zerotolerance policy if we see them being broken: No littering: If either you or your crew is seen discarding anything on the course, you will be immediately disqualified. The race is a zero footprint race; let s leave the course even cleaner than we find it. Crews: obey all laws: This goes without saying, but crew vehicles must always obey all local, state, and federal laws. This specifically includes pulling all the way off the road when assisting runners, and never driving at the speed of the runner. Nighttime gear: During nighttime hours (9:00 pm until 6:00 am), all runners must wear 360 degrees of reflective gear, as well as a blinky light on the front and back of their bodies. A headlamp, while not required, is highly recommended. No cheating: With no prize money despite the immense difficulty and dedication needed to succeed in the sport, the lighthouse 100 has an Absolute Zero Tolerance Policy regarding cheating. Any runner found to be cheating during the race (a) will be immediately disqualified from the lighthouse 100 for life, (b) will be forever listed on the Official Results as "DISQUALIFIED FOR CHEATING," and (c) the runner's name will be publicly shared with as many other events/race directors as possible (and Dave knows everyone in this sport). The Golden Rule: We want all runners to have a great and enjoyable race experience. So use common sense, treat fellow runners, crews, volunteers, and general members of the public you meet during the race with the utmost courtesy and respect. Remember, you paid to be out there on the course. We understand that tempers can flare at times during such a physically and emotionally difficult event, but just remember the golden rule, and you ll have a great race!! 5

51 ZWITTY ULTRA COACHING Welcome to the Zwitty Ultra Endurance Training Program! With over 20 combined years of endurance running -- and racing -- experience, Dave Krupski and Michele Graglia have competed (and done very well) in some of the world's most iconic marathons and ultramarathons, including the Boston Marathon, the New York City Marathon, the 153-mile Spartathlon in Greece, the Badwater 135 in Death Valley, the 175-mile UltraMilano-Sanremo in Italy, the Leadville 100 (the "Race Across the Sky"), the Angeles Crest 100, the Keys 100, and many, many others. Between the two, Dave and Michele have finished over 30 races of 100 miles or longer (often winning or placing in the top-3), as well as over 30 marathons. Notably, Dave finished in the top-5 overall at the 2015 Badwater 135. Dave started the Zwitty Ultra program in August 2014 to share his love and passion for running with others, and especially to use his experience and education/training/certifications to help runners reach their goals, ranging from finishing a marathon for the first time to competing to win the Badwater 135. To date, dave has coached over 300 runners in just three short years of zwitty ultra. There are no magic pills or tricks in this business. This is the beauty of endurance running events: they are meritocracies... the harder you work, the better you will perform, period. But there is a huge difference between intelligent/analytical training and just winging it. That is where we come in. Whether you are training for your first marathon, trying to qualify for Boston, running your first ultra, or trying to win Badwater 135, Western States, or Leadville, we can help you devise a training plan and race-day strategy that will let you realize your goal. To be clear, you will be the one doing all the work; but we will be resources who will be steadfastly and 100% in your corner at all times. Today, Team Zwitty has dozens and dozens of members, and Zwitty runners are competing strongly in -- and often winning -- races from 10ks to international ultramarathons!
