2 Deb Foster in her first KR event Bad boys at the back of the bus The race was the best for a few years. Good weather contributed. Thanks to Big Bobby for driving the full bus, and to Ventura for the bus being free of charge. Time capture and the exit from the lake on the bus was better. Marie & cousin Laura who arrived from England on the morning of the run. Gerry, April, Lesley Anthony, Derek, John and Puffing Billy letting off steam Michelle & Marie were very quick with both running PB s. Michelle won the Female Veteran prize (over 40) with Marie a very close 2 nd. Some great runs from all with 21 runners of our 37 running a PB. The best part was the slower train. It gave many of us a chance to beat it home. Engine driver Peter Stowell explained his problems. Dew fell on the eucalyptus trees which fell on the tracks. In the uphill sections the wheels slipped and he had to stop then re-start. Hallelujah. Plenty of happy KR faces and for once we had the guys with beat the train tickets. 3 Great Ocean Road 17 May The weekend was again a cracker with a huge contingent of KR s and family attending. Some arrived Friday for an early start, some staying until Monday, and many darting down Saturday and returning Sunday. Saturday had our 14km sprinters out with four excellent performances. Team D Alberto looked spent at the finish and Bronwen again ran a top race. New KR s Miranda, Louise, Debbie, Gavin, Johnny and Johan all wore the KR shirts well and we were delighted with their performances. 14km 522 finishers KR team 4th Bronwen Cardy th overall 24 1 st F55 Anna D Alberto st F50 Bruce Rattenbury st M55 Aldo D Alberto Dinner at the hotel on Saturday was fantastic with 50+ KR s and friends/family enjoying the stories. We believe the bar has never sold so many soft drinks and the kitchen produced carbs aplenty. Sunday s race was blessed and the feared weather did not eventuate. We ferried the runners to Kennet River & Lorne. Whilst the hills are daunting, KR s are well prepared and there were some excellent times check the results box. Gavin Morton won the St Johns prize in a presidential like display of filling the plastic bag at race end. Johnny Raath in the KR shirt for the first time. 4 45k runners were complimented by none other than the great Mona we had the front row of the grid at Lorne full and he wondered how many of you Knox guys are doing this? All 45k runners did well with Pete Bignell a standout. Of course the evergreen Vic was sensational in winning M60. Mike asleep with the Sniper at our Sunday BBQ both on electrolyte for recovery A great run by Pete Bignell in the 45k Excellent runs in the half to Vincey, Dave Rolfe, and Dave Souter. Fantastic age-group wins to Jeff M45 and Mike M55. Jeff finished close behind Tour de France legend Phil Anderson, whilst Gavin Clarke finished next to Tourism Minister Tim Holding. Derek also ran well and was sniped by Peter White in controversial circumstances. Members will be disappointed to hear how far this formerly respected leader has fallen. He was likened to Rotten Ronnie Andrews as he dashed for the line. 5 Byron Bay weekend June Kelly & Milan Stanisic becoming 20 year members in On the balcony of Villa Harris Steve & Sharyn Harris kindly invited KR s to check out their future retirement home. Greg & Angela and Mike & Lesley ventured up to confirm Byron is a great location to run, eat, drink and maybe retire. Milan the team player 20 years at KR Interesting stats on how long our members have been with us: 20 years years years 32 1 st year members We are delighted to have so many enthusiastic new members and equally delighted that members stay for many years of health, camaraderie and sore knees. With 26 members having more than 10 years membership, it s hard to argue. Drink stop on the Byron Bolt Members new & old We continue to have new members join us with some quality athletes joining recently. Welcome to Matt Hevern, Johan Mostert, Paul Harrison, Marnee Tobin & Liz Dalton. We also celebrate some big membership milestones with Steve Spike Milligan: For those of us struggling with injuries to an ageing body, Spike Milligan once said: I have the body of an 18 year old; I keep it in the fridge. 6 My running Greg Palmer For our many new members, we ll introduce a runner each newsletter. This time we ll find out a bit more about our Life Member and former President Greg Palmer: Started running: Cross Country at school then after a break began jogging the home block in Mondays we swim at Karen s gym he makes me look good. What keeps you coming to KR? KR has been a great club to be involved with great characters to call my mates. Even though my knees make it hard to run, KR is a drug I cannot and will not give up. Joined KR: 1988 with John Juraszek Favourite running events & PB s: Marathon = 2:48:48 (10 x sub 3hr) 10k = 36:58 Puffing Billy = 48:26 (in 1991) Half Marathon: 80:05 (chasing Baz) Olympic Dream: Milan & I have run them all. Best = 37:10 At home: Mr Grumpy has been married to Angela for 30 years and they have had three boys, Craig (dec.), Mark (25 lives in Cobram) & Jason (23 - working in China). A little known fact? I was in the Australia Post Queen St building when the gunman shot many of my mates. Thankfully he was stopped 2 floors below where I was working. Greg, Dave & Milan -Three Greasy Mates & fifty Melbourne Marathons First Baysie breakfast run On Saturday 9 May we tried a new away run based in Bayswater. We had breakfast at Highside café. Judging by the ~30 who attended, it was popular. It was Vincey s first ever coffee in Bayswater. Why do you still hang around with your greasy mates Rolfie and Milan, and why oh why DT? Dave & Milan we always found ourselves running at the same pace. Now our wives are mates too. DT (Dave Thorn) has been a great support for myself and the club for many years we run together now, and on Bret at the head of the table Page 6

7 Trivia night 20 June December. It will be subsidised by the club and will have good food, great music and great company. Leave the Asics at home and bring your dancing shoes. Whilst it s predominantly an adult night, if you cannot get a babysitter, then please bring the kids along too. Melbourne Marathon - 11 October Neil in charge of trivia Our 5 th annual Trivia night was our biggest yet. Neil did a great job as usual. The winning Team Tobin won based on Adam and his dummy spit petulance wins. The night raised $567 which we use to subsidise our singlets and tracksuits. We are now into the long winter runs and you will be well on the way towards Melbourne Marathon This year the usual Blackburn, Carrum and our Spartans Day will be on again. We will again have the bus for Carrum and Marathon Day at the MCG. When entering, put Knox Roadrunners as your team regardless of the distance. Team Tobin Trivia night winners Christmas party Our Christmas Party is always a top night and this year could be the best yet. We have booked Acorn on Forest in The Basin. We have the whole place booked and need 70+ so make sure you come along. Running friends and family are most welcome.
