2014 Participant Guide Around the Mount Triathlon Saturday, April 26th, 8:00 a.m. Dear Triathletes, This document is being sent to help communicate the key pieces of information you need to have a fun, safe and successful event. Within this document we outline rules and disqualifiers so it is important that you read it carefully. Please take time to read the entire document and us, via Kaitlin Hallahan with your questions: at hallahan@msmary.edu. We will have packet pick-up on Friday, April 25 th from 5 8 p.m. and again beginning at 6 a.m. on race day, April 26 th. We will race rain or shine so plan accordingly! Thanks again for being a part of the inaugural Around the Mount Triathlon to support Mt. St. Mary s University Athletics. Race Committee Around the Mount Triathlon
Volunteers- The event requires many volunteers. We like to have more than needed to cover every possible detail. As a result we are always looking for more volunteers. Please contact us if a friend or family member is interested in assisting on the day of the race. Please us at hallahan@msmary.edu and we will provide the details. Event Cancellation- The ATM triathlon may be delayed or cancelled due to adverse, inclement, or unsafe weather. Should the event be delayed, the starting time of the event will be moved back accordingly. The delay will be communicated to all participants on race day with updates also posted to our Facebook page: The ATM Race Committee in conjunction with Mt. St. Mary s administration and local law enforcement has the authority to cancel the event. If cancellation of the event takes place, please follow instructions of the event officials and local law enforcement personnel. Your entry fee is non-refundable if the race is cancelled due to adverse, inclement, or unsafe weather. The Race Director also reserves the right to modify the course at any time before or during an event by his/her own judgment or if instructed by local law enforcement personnel. Weather Conflicts- The race will not be cancelled for rain, hot or cold conditions so plan according to the forecast. For severe weather please read above. Directions to Mount Saint Mary s University- From Baltimore: Take I-695 Baltimore Beltway to I-795 Northwest Expressway. Take Northwest Expressway to end and pick up MD 140 toward Westminster. Stay on 140 through Westminster and Taneytown to US 15 at Emmitsburg. Take US 15 South for two miles to the College & follow signs to PNC Athletic Complex. From Washington: Take I-495 Washington Beltway around western side of metropolitan area across the Potomac River to I-270 North to Frederick. Follow I-270 North to US 15 North to the College & follow signs to PNC Athletic Complex. Additional starting points can be found via the Mount Athletics Website at: Triathlon Schedule- (all times are approximate) Friday, April 25th 5:00pm-8:00pm: Sign-in/Packet Pick-up LOCATION: The tents across from the transition area. There will be signs as well as volunteers directing participants to the packet pick up area. The ARCC closes promptly at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 26th 6:00am-7:15am Sign-in/Packet Pick-up and Transition Area is open LOCATION: registration tent opposite the finish line 7:15am 7:30am Packet Pickup closes Pre-race meeting & final instructions
7:30am 7:45am 8:00am TRANSITION AREA CLOSES In chronological order by bib number, racers proceed to the pool area Race begins Parking- There are other events occurring at the PNC Athletic Complex on April 26 th. We have reserved certain parking lots, E & F, for the Triathlon and they are located across the street from the transition area. At the end of this document is a parking pass that can be used to help security direct you to the proper parking location. Please print that page and bring with you on the morning of the race. The earlier you arrive the closer you will be to the transition area. Please park only in the assigned lots. Packet Pick Up/Body Marking- We encourage everyone to arrive early to help process everyone through check-in. Photo ID will be required for packet pick up. We encourage participants to come to packet pick up on Friday evening if possible (see schedule above). Body marking will be required. We will mark one arm and one leg with your race number and mark your age on your calf. We will be doing body marking at packet pick up and on the pool deck. Before you rack your bike you must be signed in. Pre-Race Meeting- The meetings scheduled (see above) are designed to give all racers last minute instructions for a safe and successful race. Please attend! Transition Area- We recommend that you arrive early with your bike to claim your spot in the transition area. YOU MUST have a wrist band to enter the transition area. Please sign in first, before you come to the transition area. You must wear your band during the race. ALL participants must be checked in by 7:15a.m and racked in transition by 7:30a.m., NO ACCEPTIONS! We will close the transition area promptly at 7:30a.m. It is first come first serve for your transition area bike location. Each rack is designed to hold 6 bikes, 3 on each side. Please refer to the picture below. Rack your bike using your seat and make sure your gear is set up on the right side of your front wheel. The picture below shows a blue towel with the gear for the participant on the most left side of the rack.
Restrooms- There are public restrooms inside the ARCC as well as locker rooms with showers at the pool. Food/Water Stations- We will have water on the run course as well as near the transition area. You will have 2 opportunities to hydrate on the run course. The on-course water station is located at approximately the 1.2 mile mark. Runners will pass this location two times with the ability to get hydrated each time. There are no water or food stations on the bike course. We will also have food items at the finish line area for volunteers and participants only. Relay Teams- Relay teams will be starting among the individual participants. The swimmer s starting position is determined by the estimated swim finish time indicated during registration. Relay teams must be ready to at 7:45 a.m., based on Bib number. The relay team hand-off from swim to bike must be inside the bike transition area and the timing chip must be handed off. Then the chip will again be handed off in the bike transition between the biker and the runner. If a relay team crosses the finish line without their chip their time will not be captured. The runner must wear the race number (bib number). Start Time- The Triathlon will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 26th. We will sort the participants based on expected swim finish time and assign bib numbers in chronological order of start. Bib #1 would start first, with Bib #200 the last entrant into the swim portion. An approximate swim start list will be posted at the sign-in areas on Friday and Saturday. This should be used as a guideline, not a guarantee swim start time. Swim Format- Participants will be directed to a lane by the swim marshal. Swimmers will enter the pool area and step across the timing matt, Racers will remain in one swim lane for the entire 16 lengths, with each lane shared by two participants occupying ½ of the lane. If you are assigned to the left side of lane 4, please stay on the left side for both the up and the back portions of the swim. We need you to be in line outside of the pool ready to swim for your approximate scheduled swim time. If you miss your start time you will be slot in the back. Your estimated swim time is being used to place you in the water. Swim Rule- We will not allow walking, continual pushing of the pool floor or pulling on the ropes. Advancing in this manner will disqualify you from your event. We will let you finish your race but your name will be pulled from the results. You will be allowed to stop and stand at the wall but should remain in your portion of the lane to avoid interfering with other swimmers. Bike Format- Thee bike course is NOT closed to traffic. You must obey all traffic laws and use good judgment when racing on the course. We will mark the turns with signs and plan to have Frederick County Fire Police at the two major intersections of Old Frederick Road & Maryland Route 76 and Old Frederick Road & Maryland Route 77. WE STRONGLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO DRIVE THE BIKE COURSE to ensure you know where to turn. It is your responsibility to know the course. Turn by Turn Directions are at the end of the document. Bike Rules- Helmets are required, with chin straps fastened, before you leave the transition area and kept fastened until you return to the transition area. A bike mount/dismount area will be marked near the transition area. Failure to mount/dismount at the appropriate location will result in a time penalty. When on the course please stay to the right and allow faster riders to pass on the left. There is no water on the course so please bring your own. There is no drafting on the bike. We
will be monitoring this and will disqualify anyone who is caught drafting. To avoid this please leave 3 bikes lengths between you and the person in front of you. To pass you must move to the left then pass. Again, please follow all applicable traffic laws. Run Format- The 5K run is contained exclusively within the Mt. St. Mary s Campus. The run is mostly on a paved surface with a minor section on crushed stone. The finish will take place near the transition area on grass. There will be course marshals assisting with directions as well as directional signs and a chalk line to indicate the running route. A course map is included in this document. Run Rules- You must wear your number (bib#) on your front during the run. This is required for accurate timing at the finish line and will aid the photographers in identifying you on the run. Please stay to the right on the run so other runners can pass you on your left. Security- All participants are responsible for their equipment and belongings. Mt. St. Mary s and the Race Committee will not be responsible for lost or stolen equipment or belongings. Only participants with a proper wrist band will be permitted in the transition area. You must wear your wrist band the entire race and it will be required to take your bike out of the transition area. Please share with your family and friends that they must stay out of the transition area. Awards- The awards ceremony for the Triathlon will follow the last triathlon finisher. We will do our best to make the results available as quickly after the final finisher completes their event as possible. Awards will not be mailed unless you request us to (in writing) and pay a $10 mailing fee. The categories being awarded will be as follows. Overall Male Overall Female Top Male Student Top Female Student Top Male Faculty/ Staff Top Female Faculty/ Staff Top Male Team Top Female Team Top Mixed Team Age groups winners for Males and Females will be awarded in the following categories: 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60+ Bib Number- Bib numbers have been assigned to each participant and must be worn and visible on the bike and run course. You must have it on the front for the run segments and either front or back on the bike segment. You will not get a finishing time if you do not have your number at the finish line. Relay teams only need it for the runner. Timing- This race is chip timed. You will be given your timing chip on the pool deck minutes before you swim. The chip must be worn low on the ankle and must have your bib/race number on the chip (see picture below). We will collect the chip from you at the finish line. Chips that are not returned will billed to you at a cost of $20 to replace the chip.
Triathlon Timing Chip Post-Race Meal- Sandwiches, soft drinks and beer will be available for all race participants following the race. Friends and family may bring their own food, and can find vending machines in the ARCC. The school cafeteria is located on the main side of campus in Patriot Hall. School Bookstore- Mt.
