PASSION FOR PRIMATES 8-10 JULY 2017, JERSEY conservation academy

COURSE OVERVIEW An exciting introduction to the lemurs, monkeys and apes at Durrell; including conservation work around the world, both in captivity and in the wild. Drawing upon more than 50 years of Durrell s pioneering work with primates, this course combines practical workshops with behind the scenes opportunities and time to talk to and learn from Durrell s primate staff. WHO IS IT FOR? This is a three-day course aimed at anybody with an interest in primates, their captive care and our conservation work to save them. WHAT IS THE COURSE CONTENT? During the course you will: Learn more about the Durrell experience in conserving primates around the world Enjoy behind the scenes tours of our primate departments Make enrichment food parcels for various primate species Spend time with our expert animal staff COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of this course you will have deeper knowledge of primate biology, ecology, evolution and conservation and develop your understanding of primate behaviour and the practicalities of keeping primates in captivity.

COURSE OUTLINE The course format involves talks and discussion in classroom and on site, behind the scenes private tours and hands on enrichment preparation. SATURDAY 8 JULY Day one includes an introductory session and a behind the scenes tour of one of our primate departments. A park tour in the afternoon includes Aye Aye enrichment, a Q&A session with a lemur keeper and a brief history of Orangutans at Durrell. SUNDAY 9 JULY Day two will begin with a private photographic tour of the park before it opens to the public. The day focusses on Gorillas and Lemurs; the threats facing primates and the different possible options we can use to try to conserve them. You will plan and design an ideal enclosure. MONDAY 10 JULY Day three we concentrate on conservation efforts for endangered South American Tamarins, prepare enrichment for the Sulawesi Crested Macaques, and take a behind the scenes look at our organic farm. You will visit the Veterinary Department which is not usually seen by other visitors to the park. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ABOVE COURSE OUTLINE MAY BE SUBJECT TO MINOR CHANGES

COURSE LEADERS Fiona Marchant EDUCATION AND INTERPRETATION SUPERVISOR Fiona has worked in the education department at Durrell for 8 years. Along with the other members of the education team she coordinates and delivers informal education to Zoo visitors. Among other things she runs the behind the scenes experiences, visitor engagement training for volunteers. In her spare time she is an active member of the park s staff and volunteer art group, Art on the Ark. She says she can t draw or paint but but is an avid photographer! Dominic Wormell HEAD OF MAMMAL DEPARTMENT Dominic has been working for Durrell for over 25 years. He is an internationally renowned expert on the captive management of marmosets and tamarins, and has contributed to several in-situ recovery and reintroduction programmes for these small monkeys in their native South America, and on building up the skills needed by conservationists to care for them in their own countries. Dominic was involved in the first ever reintroduction to the wild of a captive-born black lion tamarin, and has been instrumental in generating support for the restoration of this species habitat, partly through Durrell s Cans for Corridors initiative. Dr Tim Wright ACADEMY MANAGER, DURRELL CONSERVATION ACADEMY Tim is responsible for the development and delivery of training courses. He joined Durrell Conservation Academy in 2010, having previously worked for eleven years in the mammal department of Durrell. During that time he was responsible for the lemur collection at Durrell, as well as carrying out fieldwork in Madagascar, providing GIS support to staff, co-ordinating population management of several captive breeding programmes, and working in Durrell s conservation genetics lab. Tahnee Blakemore EDUCATION OFFICER Growing up in Jersey, Tahnee spent her visiting Durrell and and is now excited to be working for them; her role involves working alongside Fiona delivering public education events and experiences. Tahnee graduated from Durham University with a BA (hons) in Anthropology, and then stayed to complete a MSc in Evolutionary Anthropology. Her interests involve evolution, primate behaviour and learning. THEY WILL BE JOINED BY OUR MANY PRIMATE EXPERTS AROUND THE ZOO, INCLUDING OUR MAMMAL KEEPERS AND THE VETERINARY SERVICES TEAM.

VENUE AND ACCOMMODATION The course will be held at Durrell Conservation Academy in Jersey, Channel Islands. Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust (Durrell) was established by the world renowned naturalist and author Gerald Durrell in 1963 with the primary aim of saving species from extinction. We now run 46 projects in 14 countries worldwide and have played a pivotal role in the recovery efforts for several species. thinking skills required to bring species back from imminent demise. Since this time the academy has taught over 5,500 people (both conservation practitioners and conservation students) from 137 countries. Our facilities include a 54 seat purpose built lecture theatre, two libraries, a computer lab and a classroom. There is 24 hour access to our computers and free Wi-Fi is available throughout. Durrell Conservation Academy is located at the Trust s headquarters, Durrell Wildlife Park. In 1984 Gerald Durrell formally established the International Training Centre (now known as Durrell Conservation Academy) on Jersey as a form of mini university designed to equip conservationists from across the world with the animal management and critical
