1 Introduction Basic BASIC Racing Rules, and Situations Particular situations may have specific interpretations, and there are exceptions to the general rules. This presentation is no substitute for reading the rule book carefully.

3 Basic Rules 1 A boat on starboard tack has right of way over a port tack boat Starboard!

4 Basic Rules 2 A boat to leeward has right of way over a ward boat on the same tack Windward boat keep clear

5 Basic Rules 3 When rounding a ward mark, an inside boat on the same tack must be given room Room!

6 Basic Rules 4 When rounding a leeward mark, an inside boat must always be given room (irrespective of Port v Starboard) Room!

7 Basic Rules 5 A boat which is tacking must keep clear of one that is not A boat clear astern must keep clear of boat ahead (don t run into the back of a boat in front!) When a right-of-way boat changes course, she must give other boats room to keep clear

8 Basic Rules 6 If you break a right-of-way rule, you must do two turns promptly after the incident that s two tacks and two gybes! If you touch a mark, you must do one turn promptly If there was serious damage, you must retire You must keep clear of other boats when doing your penalty turns

9 Passing Situations 1 A boat passing to ward must keep clear of a leeward boat on the same tack. Warning! Don t get into this position, red boat, or else!! Windward boat keep clear (But no requirement to hail)

10 Passing Situations 1 A boat passing to ward must keep clear of a leeward boat on the same tack. The leeward boat may luff, as far as head-to-, to prevent the ***!!!!! this might happen You failed to keep clear! Protest

11 Passing Situations 2 A boat passing to leeward on the same tack must not sail above her proper course (unless separation is greater than 2 boat lengths) Don t head up!!! Hold your Proper course! NO OK Less than two boat lengths

12 Passing Situations 3 Before the start, there is no proper course, so a boat passing to leeward may luff a ward boat up to head-to- Once the start gun sounds, a boat passing to leeward may not sail above her proper course (close hauled)

13 Meeting Situations 1 A boat on starboard tack has right of way over a port tack boat Starboard!

14 Meeting Situations 2 Tack (and ward/leeward) is defined by which side the boom is on Leeward Windward (keep clear of green boat) Port Starboard (keep clear of green boat)

15 Meeting Situations 3 A A right-of-way boat must give a keep-clear boat room to keep clear A starboard tack boat must not change course if as a result the port tack boat must immediately change course to keep clear (i.e. no hunting)

16 Mark Roundings 1 At a ward mark, a boat on starboard tack has right of way over a port tack boat Starboard!

17 Mark Roundings 2 When rounding a ward mark, an inside boat on the same tack must be given room if overlapped when lead boat reaches three boat lengths from the mark, even if overlap is broken subsequently Overlap! Room at the Mark!

18 Mark Roundings 2b When rounding a ward mark, an inside boat on the same tack must be given room only if overlapped when lead boat reaches three boat lengths from the mark No overlap! Keep Clear

19 Mark Roundings 2c When rounding a ward mark, an inside boat on the same tack must be given room if overlapped within three boat lengths of the mark Room! No Room Yellow Boat! Keep Clear Room for me too Red Boat!

20 Mark Roundings 3 When rounding a leeward mark, an inside boat (if overlapped within three boat lengths of the mark) must always be given room (irrespective of Port v Starboard) Room!

21 Mark Roundings 4 An inside boat is not entitled to room at a start mark RC No Barging!

22 RGYC Race Procedures 1 The first warning signal is 5 minutes prior to the first start. A Yellow flag is displayed. RC Horn!

23 RGYC Race Procedures 2 Preparatory signal is 4 minutes prior to start. Flag P is displayed (white square inside blue flag) RC Horn!

24 RGYC Race Procedures 3 At one minute before the first start, Flag P is lowered RC Horn!

25 RGYC Race Procedures 4 Start yellow flag is dropped. Visual signal has precedence over horn RC Horn!

26 RGYC Race Procedures 5 The RC will raise the X flag if a boat is over the line at the start RC #1746 You re over!

27 RGYC Race Procedures 6 The RC may signal a general recall if so many boats are over early that RC can t identify them all RC Horn! Horn!

28 RGYC Race Procedures 7 The RC may postpone the race for lack of, changing direction, etc. No! RC Horn! Horn! Postpone!

29 RGYC Race Procedures 8 The RC may abandon the race for lack of, storms, etc. No! RC Horn! Horn! Horn! Abandon!

30 Things to Remember Starboard has right of way over port this rule takes care of 90% of problems When in doubt, keep clear of other boats (you are never in the right if there is a major collision! And if you luff up into a ward boat, just a gentle tap or nudge to make your point) We all have to do penalty turns now and again. Two turns = two tacks and two gybes HAVE FUN!!!
