While I much rather using original material, the Trailable yacht fraternity is reasonably close, and other groups have articles of interest to us. The source of other material is always acknowledged in these pages. The President has hinted of stories to tell about another overseas adventure undertaken by some. Let us know, with pictures, through these pages, please So far this summer the weather has been up and down. I managed to get some sailing in last week on the Gippsland Lakes in between running a camp, and before the rain. The boat was well washed. My youngest son is braving wind and rain at Sorrento at the Moth Worlds. They have had to cancel sailing today (14/1) due to high winds. Little boats that go fast, can be susceptible to breakage in rough seas. I ve not even been tempted to have a go on the Moth too wet for me these days but maybe a few years ago I remember when he was learning he spent a lot of time swimming as he recovered from capsize. They are exciting to watch, though. I am very happy to stick to my Noelex and all it s comforts, especially remaining reasonably dry! Also in this edition there is a notice of race for the National and NSW Championships. March in Victoria also has racing on the Gippsland Lakes with the Marlay Point, the Victorian Noelex Championships, and the YV Trailable Championships on consecutive weekends. I believe that boats can be stored in Paynesville over this time contact your YV representative. So let me know of your adventures, good places to sail, best recipes, how you squeezed that new engine in, any other items that might be of interest to other Noelex owners by mid-march so I can get another edition of Telltales to you after Easter. I look forward to hearing from you all. Fair sailing, Marg Telltales Vol 19 Issue 2 December
4 PRESIDENTS REPORT Dear Members I begin this Presidents Report by extracting the sword that I have impaled myself upon. Crikey, it was was really sharp too! With the settling in to our new property in Maldon, enduring the pre- Christmas Building Industry nightmare, birthdays, wedding anniversaries, New Year's Eve & Day, contracting shingles (I've never felt such pain - you wouldn't wish it on your worst enemy) I kind of forgot about the Presidents Report which has been holding up the issue of Telltales. My sincerest apologies. Since Our Annual General Meeting in July 2014, I could be trite and say "same ole', same ole". We have had a small number of resignations, a small number of yachts sold and some new members joining this wonderful Association. The exciting news is, of course, our Championships shall be held at Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club on 14 & 15 March NOR's have already been distributed. Advise if you have not received yours. An additional event which is happening this year is the inaugural NSW NX Championships to be held in conjunction with the Australian TY & SB Championships during Easter 2015 at Lake Macquarie Yacht Club. All Noelex's shall be welcomed. NOR's will be sent to all members when the information becomes available. A wonderful event that did happen to a group of intrepid sailors including yours truly, was sailing the Greek islands (amongst the Dodecanese group) in September. WOW! What a trip! We started from Kos and visited islands like Kalymnos, Lipsos, Patmos, Levithas (this island has been inhabited by the same family for 350 years - remarkable - older than white man's history in Australia) and Nisiros. We ended up back in Kos and then travelled to the island of Simi, where the three couples spent a week in a three-storied apartment. To say that the trip was a sensation would be the understatement of the year. And the Greek people were wonderful, inviting and very lovable. We sailed on a Jeanneau SOD 439, which was relatively new, spacious and fast. I love my Noelex 30 but the feeling of being in control of a 44 foot sailboat is awesome, especially in 30 knot, gusting 35 knot winds! The power surge to the soul was indescribable. Anyway, I won't add any more, for fear of holding up Telltales any longer. And once again, may you all have a sensational 2015, happy, healthy and safe. My apologies that they were not printed with the article. These are the pictures Peter sent. They are also on the website... Thanks again, Peter....if you don t mind having to pull-start, the Yamaha F9.9J short-shaft is a good option. If you need any transom measurements etc. please feel free to call me. 7 Marine Radio Helpful Hints These notes are intended to assist people who may occasionally need to use a marine radio. For Trailer Sailers there are two types of marine radio available: 27 mhz and VHF (Very High Frequency). These days VHF is the preferred radio due to its greater clarity. It is limited by its range hence some boats carry both types of radio. Both radios will have an On/Off switch, a Squelch control, and Frequency (Channel) selector. A microphone with a transmit switch is connected to the radio. Your radio should be on when sailing and preferably on during the day. When turned on you should set your Squelch control to just eliminate any static in the speaker. The more Squelch you apply the less range you will hear so keep it to a minimum. If using 27 mhz your calling/distress and listening channel is 88. Your talking channels are 90, 91, or 96. For VHF the calling/distress and listening channel is 16. Your talking channels are 72, 73, or 77. The alternate calling channel is 86 for 27 mhz and 67 for VHF. These channels are mainly used by official operators. E.G The Coast Guard may issue a call to all ships to give a weather report or other warning on 88 and 16. They will then direct you to listen on 86 and 67. You should only use 88 or 16 to make contact with another boat or shore station such as the Coast Guard or Water Police. Do not use these channels to hold a conversation. Once you have made contact you should move to a talking channel as shown above. If another operator is on a channel do not talk over them. Wait until they have finished. To make a call: Radio turned on, channel 88 or 16 selected as appropriate. Take the microphone and hold it a couple of inches from your mouth, press the calling switch, and speak clearly. When finished speaking use the word Over to signify that you have finished speaking and await an answer. Release the communication switch on the microphone. Don t shout it doesn t help. The person receiving the call should answer and direct you to a talking channel to receive your message. Example: Winsome calling Silk Dept. Silk Dept Silk Dept Silk Dept. This is Winsome Winsome Winsome, are you receiving? Over. Silk Dept hears the call and responds. Winsome this is Silk Dept please go to 72, Over. Winsome responds Going 72. Both move to channel 72 and acknowledge now on 72. The communication is passed and when completed use the word Out to signify all complete and return to either 16 or 88. If Silk Dept doesn t respond to Winsome s call, Winsome should transmit: Nothing heard. Winsome standing by on 16, or 88 as appropriate. Emergencies: If the boat is in immediate danger, e.g. sinking or on fire use the same calling procedure above. Use the words Mayday Mayday Mayday Identify yourself, and give your position. If you have an injury on board who requires medical attention use the words Pan Pan, Pan Pan, Pan Pan. Only to be used for serious emergencies. Silence Periods: To improve safety and give a genuine distress call a chance to be heard, radio silence should be observed 3 min after the hour and 3 min after the half hour. These notes are intended as a quick guide. For detailed use of VHF radio and your responsibilities as an operator please refer to : The Marine Radio operators Hand Book, published by the Australian Maritime College. Also refer: VHF Marine Radio ACMA. (Aust. Communications and Media Authority). 21 Around Sunday Island Race Report Port Albert Yacht Club hosted an exciting Around Sunday Island Race on Saturday 06 December. This event was Heat 4 of the Victorian Trailable Yacht Travellers Series. Three Noelex 25 participated including local member Kevin Corcoran s Alfie Mac, Melbourne Trailable YC members Ron Parker (Tainui) and Dennis Bromley (O Really II). Unfortunately the weather was far from ideal with overcast drizzly skies and a strong easterly wind whipping in from Bass Strait. The conditions deterred a number of smaller trailable yachts leaving a mixed fleet of 10 trailable yachts. After some consideration of the weather forecast and prevailing conditions, the race committee called the briefing and the race got underway with a fast and furious spinnaker run down the Midge Channel followed by a hard beat to windward back along the Snake Island channel and finally a fast reach up the main channel into the finish at Port Albert. There was some very close racing on all legs and sailors returned after the race very happy and excited about the race just completed. Line honours went to the Elliot 7.4 No Excuses (Gary Sawyer). Class Based Handicap winner was Tainui (Ron Parker, Ruth Eaton and Peter Mart). Second on CBH was Pipalini (Mitch, Keith Bayliss and Tom Kershaw. Third on CBH was O Really II (Dennis and Sue Bromley and Lloyd Graham). Port Albert YC hosted a fabulous afternoon tea presentation and that was followed by a great dinner and entertaining guest speaker in the evening. A scheduled cruise the next day was cancelled due the worsening weather conditions. This is a classic race for trailable yachts on an interesting stretch of coastline with Wilsons Promontory in the background. Being part of the Vic Trailable Travellers Series and on a weekend away from the usual Melbourne Cup weekend has possibly given the race a new lease of life. Next year it would be great to see a dozen Noelex at this event. See front page pic. Ron Parker Telltales Vol 19 Issue 2 December
