2017 MR340 Terry Shortt Boat # 0905 Orange PFD Epic 18x kayak, white with black bow and stern tips Lodging: 8-6/8-7 Hilton Garden Inn 520 Minnesota Ave Kansas City KS /8-11 Country Inn & Suites 1190 S. Main St. St Charles MO 63 Emergency Stuff: I don t expect you to ever need this info, but this is how the process is supposed to work, just so you know. Safety boat Coordinator main contact number This is the number to be called if I m MIA, or if there s some sort of family emergency which would require me to pull out of the race, but you can t reach me on my phone. If you re at a ramp, you can also ask one of the volunteers to contact a safety boat for you or a lot of the time there will be one beached at the checkpoint. 99% of the time if I don t show up when expected it will be no big deal. Could be that I was exhausted and had no phone signal but had to sleep or fall out of the boat. Or maybe I broke the boat somehow while simultaneously dropping my phone in the river. But, If I m over an hour late, my spot isn t moving and I haven't contacted you with a revised ETA, you might want to call and give them a heads up. If they start looking for me, it doesn t mean that I m DQ d. If I m ok, then no harm no foul. But if I ve got a problem, you ll be able to notice it well before they could. Unless the ground crew raises an alarm, they wouldn t start looking for me until I missed a checkpoint cutoff time, until I managed to flag them down, or until I got another paddler to contact them for me, so having you is a nice safety net in case it s a real situation. As Virtual Ground Crew, Kriya will have this duty from the race start until you and I hook up on Wednesday. If you need to call them, It would be helpful if you can give them my last known position and what my plan was from the last time you talked to me, and how long overdue I am. Obviously the last known location from my Spot Tracker would be helpful as well.
Race start: Tuesday, Kaw Point Park 1403 Fairfax Trafficway Kansas City KS Checkpoints (Blue) & alternate stops (Black) -Napoleon Riverview Dr. Napoleon MO Lexington Riverfront Park (Riverfront Dr & 10th St., Lexington MO 64067) 2. Waverly Access- Waverly MO (North on Main Street until you hit the park,) -Miami - Miami MO (North end of main street) -Dalton Bottoms- Salisbury MO (S. from Dalton Mo. on Hwy J Approx 5 miles) 3. Stump Island Rec Park, (100 Market St. Glasgow MO 65254) -Franklin Island Access- New Franklin MO (From Boonville, cross river on Hwy 40. 3 My cruise speed will be somewhere between mph, based on current. Assuming it s around 7.0 mph, my checkpoint split times will look like this: Kaw Point to Lexington (50 miles) 7hr 10min Lexington to Waverly (23 miles) 3hr 15min Waverly to Glasgow (68 miles) 9hr 45min Glasgow to Jeff City (82 miles) 11hr 45min Jeff City to Hermann (46 miles) 6hr 30min Hermann to Klondike (42 miles) 6hr 00min Klondike to St Charles (27 miles) 3hr 50min If I m faster or slower than 7mph, then the split times will change accordingly. Also, last year I slowed down a little bit on day 2 & 3, but sometimes the current picks up in eastern MO due to water coming in from other rivers, so estimating speed is a real crapshoot and probably won t be constant for all 3 days. There s a matrix on the last page that shows split times between checkpoints for different speeds, but assuming that 7mph is somewhere in the ballpark, my slow plan will look something like this: Tuesday 7:00 am Kaw Point 2:30 pm Lexington 6:00 pm Waverly 2:00 am Dalton Bottom (not a checkpoint, but a safety boat will overnight there) Wednesday 5:00 am Dalton Bottom 7:00 am Glasgow 11:30 am Franklin Island (not a checkpoint) 7:30 pm Jeff City 2:00 am Hermann Thursday 5:00 am Hermann 11:00 am Klondike 3:00 pm St Charles FINISH Note- I d like to make Dalton Bottoms of day one, but if I don t make it that far I ll probably sleep for a while at Miami. If I think I can make it further, then I might push on to Glasgow. If I paddle late into the night, that also opens up the option of sleeping for a few hours through the heat of the next afternoon, But fog, storms, fatigue, and current speed can all derail any estimate so the above is just a rough guide at best.
There s a website called raceowl.com that logs the checkpoint in/out times, not just for me but for everybody, so you should be able to see my relative position compared to everybody else as we pass through the checkpoints. Most people (but not all) also have a Spot Tracker or phone app that also ties into raceowl.com. For those of us who are set up that way, it should show not only checkpoint times, but also real time info just like the Spot link that you had for the Freedom race, but for more people than just me. Either the race owl page or my personal Spot page should be helpful in guessing when I m going to hit a particular point. When we talk, it would be nice if you could clue me in to my race position as indicated on race owl.com, and maybe a heads up on any weather problems that might be forecast. Other than that, we can just coordinate any scheduled meet ups and that should be about it. I ll have my phone on airplane mode to keep it from roaming and save battery life, so feel free to call or text, but I won t immediately respond. I will also attempt to include your phone number in the app that I use to text in and out of checkpoints. If I do that right you should get a text whenever I arrive/leave a checkpoint. I ll try to coordinate meeting points and what we need to swap out by phone a couple of hours in advance, but once we hook up I d expect it to look something like this: Quick Stop- You grab the front of the boat to keep it from bashing into stuff, I toss you an empty camelback and trash, you toss me a full camelback, Gatorade, GPS batteries etc. and let go. Please don t use your superpowers to shove me back into the river because there are some weird eddies around the boat ramps and a backward shove can really screw things up. Basically at that point I just need you to keep the boat from dragging on the ramp or into the rocks. I blast off and you move on. I-Need-Out-of-This-Friggin -Boat Stop - You or the volunteers grab the front of the boat, I roll out and we haul it up off the ramp. We open the hatches, offload overnight gear etc. I take 10 minutes to stretch, go to the bathroom, etc. and then we re back on the water. Sleep Stop- We park the boat wherever the volunteers tell us or let them do it. Usually there s what they call a boat corral for overnight stops. Last year the volunteers carried the boat to the corral and I didn t have to do it. I m happy to sleep on the ground on my sleep mat unless it s raining. If you have a tent feel free to set it up, or you can bring a mat and sleep in the back of the Jeep. Hermann evidently sucks for sleep unless you are completely exhausted because it s right next to the train tracks and I ve been told that they go through frequently all night long, so if I end up at Hermann on Wednesday night I wouldn t blame you if you wanted to head for a hotel that night. Hopefully I ll be faster than that and can just blow past Hermann earlier in the evening and then sleep a little bit at one of the alternate stops between there and Klondike.
Groundcrew tips I got from other paddlers/groundcrews: Earplugs- Bring some if your planning to sleep at a ramp waiting for me to show up or whatever because people come and go all night long, and it s noisy. Bug Spray- I don t notice it on the river, but evidently mosquitos can be bad at the ramps Nav Lights- The LED ones last about 90 hours on one set of batteries, so if you see a boat with nobody around but the nav lights are on, don t think that you re helping them by turning their lights off. The paddler can t reach them to turn them on/off from the cockpit so most of people turn them on before the race starts and just leave them on until the finish line. That way they don t have to stop and do it as it gets dark every night. Help Each Other- It s a race, but mostly against the clock not against each other. Feel free to help other ground crews or paddlers if they run out of ice or batteries or whatever and we have extra. Ramp/Parking Space- The ramps get crowded and they are all public use, so like we saw in the Freedom race, people get irritated and call the cops if you block the boat ramp access with a car. Don t run over people- Not kidding. You wouldn t believe how tired you are when you get off the river. By the last few stops, I saw people who had basically just laid down and fallen asleep wherever they hit the ground. The checkpoints look like a cult mass suicide scene with bodies sprawled everywhere. It would be easy to run over somebody or at least step on them as you leave. Check around and under the Jeep before you hop in and drive away. Your paddler (me) will stink- By the time this is over, I will have done 3 days of hard exercise without showering. I pee in a bottle in a boat that s 22 wide and hey, accidents happen. Last year I didn t even brush my teeth until I got to the hotel. Not a pretty picture, so I m apologizing in advance. Wear a bright shirt- Because the ramps get crowded, sometimes it s hard for the paddler to pick out one person standing there, even in the daytime and figure out where s the best place to head for to get to them if they re to one side of the ramp or whatnot. At the Freedom race you were wearing a red tee shirt and I never had any trouble picking you out from everybody else. Pick a good spot to meet- sometimes the ramps have a lot of boats clogging them, if it s not rocky, it s perfectly acceptable to pull up off the ramp at one side or the other, especially if it s going to be a quick stop. If I see you standing to the side of a ramp, I m going to assume that s where I m headed, so don t drive me into a rock pile. It s helpful if you let me know if there s a jetty that I should watch out for as well. Light at night- It s sometimes hard to find the ramp at night. This isn t a problem at checkpoints because there are blue strobes marking them, but if it s a desolate spot, it s easy to blow right past it without ever seeing it. A flashlight is handy for signaling, but don t shine it directly at me so I can keep my night vision.
Gas/Chow/Ice- Some of these towns are good sized but some are just wide spots in the road (think Chadwick Missouri). People have told me that sometimes they have had trouble finding a place to get food or gas late at night and that if there s just one store nearby sometimes its cleaned out of ice or whatever even if it s the middle of the day. Resupply- The first time we hook up, I ll have 2 camelbacks in the boat, I d appreciate if you could have some ice and water to fill up one of them and I ll take it back in the boat with a couple of medium sized bottles of gatorade. After that, I can just do a drive by and swap out the empty for a full one and another couple of gatorades or whatnot. Diva Paddlers- Exhaustion causes people to get grumpy for no reason. Again, apologizing in advance. Get back in the Effin boat!- Unless it s a sleep stop or I m puking, I shouldn t be spending more than about minutes on shore at each stop. I know you ll be a great motivator. What s in the Jeep: I ll try to have it loaded before I pick you up on Sunday. I ll have a cooler in the back with the gatorades that I ll want, as well as ziplock bags with food and whatnot for you to give me at each meet up. I ll also have a couple of gallons of water in there so you should just need to add a bag of ice and we re good to go. As far as other stuff, I ll have a spare paddle in the back, but won t need to swap out unless mine breaks. There s also a green fabric shopping bag under the back seat that has a small tool collection, zip ties, spare batteries, and gorilla tape. I hope to not need any of that stuff except maybe spare batteries but it s possible that I might break the boat before or after Jeff City and need you to meet me somewhere else, which is why I put all those access points on page one. Jeep Related Stuff- Thanks to the lift kit, the rubber bushings in the front squeak and pop when they are wet. It sounds like a loose sway bar bushing or something, but I ve checked and rechecked the torque on everything and it s all good, just annoying. Like I said, it only does it when the underneath gets wet, just so you know. If you get stopped by the cops, the insurance card is in the lid of the center console. So that s about it. Thanks a ton for doing this with me. I m really looking forward to it and hope you have a great time.
split miles/time Kaw to Lexington (50 Miles) Lex to Waverly (23 Miles) Wav to Glasgow (68 Miles) Glas to Jeff City (82 Miles) Jeff to Hermann (46 miles) Herm to Klondike (42 miles) Klon to St. Charles (27 miles) 6.0 MPH 8:20 3:50 11:20 13:40 7:40 7:00 4: MPH 7:40 3:30 10:30 12:40 7:00 6:30 4: MPH 7:10 3:15 9:45 11:45 6:30 6:00 3: MPH 6:40 3:00 9:00 11:00 6:10 5:40 3: MPH 6:15 2:50 8:30 10:15 5:45 5:15 3: MPH 5:55 2:40 8:00 9:40 5:25 5:00 3:10 - Time Format = hours:minutes - - Speed will vary depending on current flow, but should average approximately 7-8 MPH. Fatigue causes you to slow down on day 2, but the current is typically faster in eastern Missouri, so it s a SWAG until you actually get out there. - Split times assume no stops between points, but on the longer stretches, I may stop in between, depending on conditions. - - All times are rounded off/approximated 1
