2 Commodore s Report as presented to 2017 AGM Ian Pine The Sailing Club has made considerable progress this 2016/17 Season despite the membership level remaining static. Having arrested the decline, with the drive and enthusiasm currently being demonstrated, we should be confident about the future. The sailing scene was very encouraging, in that most days sufficient boats sailed to create worthwhile competition. Obviously, conditions such as low water levels and extreme heat were unwelcome factors but the increasing numbers, particularly the Laser class in the milder autumn weather, has been great to see. Club members have continued to maintain Club sailing boats, mostly the Corsairs and the Lasers. The Club s decision to purchase new sails for the Lasers demonstrates a positive forward thinking attitude that continues the tradition of this Club of updating and moving forward. The upgraded power boat with its new outboard motor with power tilt has been welcomed by all. The gaining of a Grant covering one-third cost was instrumental in the Club s decision to upgrade at this time. Despite low water level the 2016 Keepit Kool was again a sailing and social success with several new sailors and many stalwarts enjoying all those elements that make our Regatta unique. The two heats of the Thunderbolt Trophy were sailed with good fleets and Lake Keepit was successful in arresting the Thunderbolt Trophy from New England for the first time in many years. The new Trophy is a fitting replacement for the original which some bushranger, it appears, has got away with! The Keepit Kup, rescued from oblivion, and found at Carcoar Sailing Club was resurrected and competed for as part of Gunnedah Weeks of Speed with sponsorship by Browns Tyres. The winners were Stan and Grayem White. We began our training with Assistant Dinghy Instructor in May with 9 members qualifying; then 15 participants trained in First Aid in October. Just over a month ago at the beginning of April, 7 members participated in a two day Dinghy Instructor Course. Our members gaining these accreditations will help greatly in our progress to becoming a Discover Sailing Centre under the Australian Sailing banner. Another qualification everyone should have is Race Officer - a free one day course which I believe the Club should program for next season. Club members supported the Manilla Central School Sport program at the end of last year by providing boats and members acting as instructors. Members were encouraged by the progress of many students and were disappointed that the program was cut short because of blue-green algae warnings issued by State Water. Members also provided Club boats for Quirindi High students over three days just a week ago Both these School programs have given members great experience that will make such training, including our planned Discover Sailing Centre, so much easier in the future. The Club has attempted to avail itself of any opportunity to promote itself. Every week race results are broadcast on ABC radio; editorial copy and photos provided to print media in Tamworth and Gunnedah; and television interviews and video on NBN and Prime TV covering major events such as Regattas. We were the major organiser of the Get to Know Keepit Open Day in October; and we also held a Discover Sailing Day in October; and Start Sailing Weekend in November. We hosted the Sunnyfield DisAbilities Group in November; and the Tamworth Air League in December. Page 2 of 12

3 In conjunction with Lake Keepit Sport and Recreation Centre our Club hosted the Ahoy Sailors Holiday Camp in October whilst a similar program in March was thwarted due to weather conditions. Members promoted the Club at the Gunnedah Youth Week Expo in April as well as participating in the Gunnedah Meet and Greet in August. Thanks to the professionalism of the Corrective Services Program Leader, plus input by some Club members, our Club grounds have been maintained to a very high standard. In the area of Club Governance and Administration it should be recognised the amount of time spent on two matters - ie Club Constitution and Club Lease. Time spent on these matters has significantly impacted on the progress of the Club in other areas; ie in particular Club promotion and membership growth. Following the adoption of the new Constitution and the progress, as small as it is, on the Lease, the Club should be able to focus its energy on its core business; ie sailing for members and membership growth and retainment. Despite these constraints I believe our Club has been achieving its objectives, whilst retaining financial viability. The Club has obtained Grants totalling $8,020 that includes $2,850 not shown in the 2016/17 Balance Sheet. The Club has achieved compliance for the Disability Access Upgrade project which can now be undertaken when we choose. The development and adoption of the Sailing Operations Manual including Risk Management Assessments, Incident Management, Race Officer Duties and Safety Boat Operations is now essential and will be required for a Discover Sailing Centre accreditation. Development, budgeting and execution of a Clubhouse maintenance program is also essential. I attended the Commodore s Conference in Sydney in June, and also made visits to Wangi Wangi Amateur Sailing Club, Carcoar and New England Sailing Clubs; as well as attending four meetings held with Park Management. The Club regrets the passing of two of our greatly respected members, George Lunnay and Ken Clifton, during this past year. Both men were Club Patrons and highly skilled sailors and contributed enormously to the life of this Club. I thank everyone for their support and contribution throughout the year. 3

9 SunnyField DisAbility Sailors November 2016 SunnyField DisAbility Sailors enjoyed their excursion up the lake by power boat and sail boat followed by lunch at the Club. They claimed the outing was the best day ever. 10 Manilla Central Sports Program November 2016 Kevin Overton Club members, under School Staff direction, provided sailing instruction for Manilla Central School Sports Program, Years 5 and 6. Most children demonstrated considerable progress in the Quirindi High Band Camp May 2017 Stan White & Bob O Brien Quirindi High Band students wasted no time in their 3 day camp at the Sailing Club. Instigated and conducted (literally) by new member, Keith Garrett, the children combined band practice with learning to sail and clearly demonstrated the value of this type of learning.
