2 رموز المتشابهات Foreword Anyone who has knowledge of Deen knows what a rewarding and virtuous act it is to memorise the Noble Qur'aan, not only for the Hafiz but for his parents as well. Hints on Similarities BY Ustaadhul Qurraa Janaab Qaari Banda Ilaahi Sahib Rasulullaah ρ is reported to have said: "The parent of a Hafiz will be made to wear (such) a crown, the brilliance of which will outshine and excel that of even the sun". When this is in store for the parents, one can imagine what will be in store for the Hafiz. Rasulullaah ρ has mentioned in another Hadith that it will be said to the Hafiz (on the Day of Judgement) "Go on reciting the Qur'aan and continue ascending the stages of paradise, your final abode will be where you reach at the time of the last Aayah (verse) of your recitation". Such are the blessings for the Hafiz and his parents. But this is not all. A Hafiz will be honoured to intercede on behalf of ten of his family members (who are destined to go to Jahannam). The virtues of a Hafiz are therefore many and great. The Qur'aan also has another special feature. Memorising it is simple and forgetting it is not difficult. While children of young age commit the entire Qur'aan to memory, yet after completing it, when a Hafiz tends to neglect (the recitation of) the Qur'aan, then in a short space of time one forgets the Qur'aan. To memorise it again becomes very difficult. In another Hadith Rasulullaah ρ is reported to have said, 'A Hafiz should be careful about the Qur'aan. I swear by Him in Whose hands is my life, that the Qur'aan escapes from the hearts more rapidly than do camels from their strings' [Muslim]. Therefore, the Huffaadh should deem it necessary to recite the Qur'aan daily. It is the bounty of Allaah Ta'aala that even in today's corrupt environment, not only young boys have the desire to memorise the Qur'aan, but even girls have shown a keen interest to do so. 2
3 It is common amongst the Huffaadh that despite making an effort in memorising the Qur'aan, they still get confused with the Mutashaabihaat [similar Aayahs). The reason being that many words and verses of the Qur'aan are linked to one another and also that the Qur'aan describes one topic in various different ways. At times the exact verses are repeated. When this happens it is very likely that one gets confused whilst learning and this makes one despondent of completing the Qur'aan. Servant of Qur'aan and Sunan, Badr Uloom, Chapi, Gujarat, India Shabe Qadr, 27 Ramadhaan 1399 Hijri Allaah Ta'aala has blessed man with two capabilities; one of understanding and the other of memorising. If, whilst memorising the Qur'aan, both of these capabilities are utilised, there is hope that one will benefit. This compilation of Qaari Bandah llaahi took many years of effort and hard work, which is actually the first of its kind. This is a stepping stone for children especially. Generally, a child may repeat an Aayah over and over again, and he may still be confused with the Mutashaabihaat. If together with learning repeatedly, he also understands that one verse is linked to another (verse), this will benefit him greatly in memorising the Qur'aan. One cannot claim that it will be a necessity for every child because there are many such children who are blessed with a very good memory. However, one cannot also profess that there is no need for it. This compilation was presented to many of the author's companions and thereafter it was approved (and sanctioned). One should bear in mind (that the compilation is not a comprehensive one which includes all the Mutashaabihaat because the difficulties experienced by many differ. If one contemplates and understands this compilation, it will not only assist one with the Mutashaabihaat included here but it will prove beneficial to terminate and solve other difficulties as well. My respected father spent many years compiling this book despite his many other responsibilities. In conclusion I wish to add that for explaining the various Mutashaabihaat many verses have been abridged. May Allaah Ta'aala accept this effort and make this a means of elevating the stages of my father. I wish to express my gratitude to my close associates, especially Hajee Sa eed Ghorawaja for assisting in this compilation. May Allaah Ta'aala reward and bless him abundantly. 4 Introduction It is Allaah's great special favour and bounty that He has blessed us with the wealth of memorising the Qur'aan. He has also granted us the ability to differentiate between the various Mutashaabihaat. This makes it easy for us to retain the noble Qur'aan. It is my personal experience that if a Hafiz repeatedly recites those verses which are confusing because of its similarities, he will master the Qur'aan. Allaah Ta'aala has blessed us in an appropriate pattern for understanding the different Mutashaabihaat. For example: The letters of the Mutashaabihaat are arranged alphabetically. A Mutashaabihaat has a similarity with another letter in the same chapter or verse, or A Mutashaabihaat harkat (diacritical mark i.e Fatha, Dhamma, Kasrah) is similar with a harkat in another chapter or verse. It is evident that if this guide is adopted both by the Ustaadh and student then Inshaa Allaah, Allaah will bestow (upon) them the ability of understanding other Mutashaabihaat. Furthermore, this system has already been approved by thousands of Huffaadh (by the grace and mercy of Allaah). On one occasion, I happened to travel to Rander where I had the opportunity of meeting Mufti Abdur Raheem Lajpuri (Author of Fataawaa Raheemiyyah), who on hearing of this compilation was very pleased and insisted that I publish this book. I was also given an opportunity to address students of Jamiah Husayniyya after which Moulana Islaamul Haq Sahib (Ustaadh of Hadith) also expressed his desire that this book be published. It is because of the encouragement (and the Grace of Allaah Ta'aala) of these two Hadharaat and many other elders that this book was published. May Allaah Ta'aala accept this kitaab and grant the Huffaadh maximum benefit. In conclusion I wish to mention a few important points: 1. The examples which I have presented in understanding the Mutashaabihaat are according to my perception. However, if anyone finds a simpler method (of understanding the Mutashaabihaat), he may adopt his method Everyone experiences difficulties in different verses. Therefore, if one could memorise the verses paired off, he should do so and then the remaining verses should be memorised. 3. Huffaadh and Asaatizah should allocate some time daily in explaining (and teaching) the students the various Mutashaabihaat. This will prove to be very beneficial. 4. This kitaab has been prepared by taking the Hifz students into consideration. Many are unaware of the Arabic language and (its terminology) and many do not even understand Arabic. Therefore, it has been simplified. Otherwise, the Arabs and the Ulema could have established excellent methods which are in accordance with their liking. Nevertheless, I have included different examples according to my perception but this does not mean that the Huffaadh could master the Qur'aan by this system only. Rather it is a stepping stone in the memorising. If this system is introduced from the very beginning, the question of confusion will be removed, rather it will assist the Huffaadh in eradicating further difficulties. My son Moulana Muhammad Ayyoob Surti Sahib (Ustaadh of Daarul Uloom Chapi in Gujarat) and my son-inlaw, Moulana Aabid Samrodi Sahib (Ustaadh - Jamiah Islaamiyyah in Dhabel) were instrumental in compiling this kitaab. I am also very grateful to the people of Ataaulaah who assisted in printing this kitaab, especially Hajee Sa'eed Ghorawala who encouraged others to purchase this kitaab and donate them to Madaaris, May Allaah Ta'aala grant all those who assisted an abundance in their livelihood. A last request to those who study this kitaab is that they should amend any errors and inform us also so that we can rectify them in our future editions. Also those who become aware of something beneficial in this regard should enlighten us, after which we will add it to future editions if we deem it useful. O Allaah! Accept this kitaab and grant the Huffaadh benefit from it and make this a means of forgiveness for me, my parents and all those who assisted. Aameen Qaari Banda Ilaahi 6
5 The Sequence of Aayaat According to the Order of the Arabic Alphabet ال ذ ين الم * ذ ل ك ال ك ت ا ب لا ر ي ب ف ي ه ه د ى ل ل م ت ق ي ن * ي و م ن و ن ب ال غ ي ب و ي ق يم و ن الص لا ة و م م ا ر ز ق ن اه م ي نف ق و ن * وال ذ ين ي و م ن و ن ب م ا أ نز ل إ ل ي ك و م ا أ نز ل م ن ق ب ل ك و ب الا خ ر ة ه م ي وق ن و ن * أ و ل ي ك ع ل ى ه د ى م ن رب ه م و أ و ل ي ك ه م ال م ف ل ح و ن * {Surah Baqarah, verses 1-5} This is the beginning of the Noble Qur'aan. While a Hafiz generally does not get confused with these verses, we are beginning with them to gain blessings from them.. وال ذ ين and ال ذ ين There is a Mutashaabihaat that appears in the words ا. Alphabetically, the و begins with a وال ذ ين, ا begins with an ال ذ ين While. وال ذ ين comes before ال ذ ين Therefore,. و appears before the ي و م ن ون appears after the first ب ال غ ي ب The second Mutashaabihaat is that while ل أ ن ز ب م ا appears after the second ي و م ن ون. If you ponder, you will م, it is a ب م ا أ ن ز ل, while in ب is recited after the ل, a ب ال غ ي ب note that in that is recited after the ب. Because ل appears before م in the Arabic. ب م ا أ نز ل appears before the word ب ال غ ي ب alphabet, the word ص م ب ك م ع م ي ف ه م لا ي ر ج ع ون ص م ب ك م ع م ي ف ه م لا ي ع ق ل ون {Surah Baqarah, verse 18} {Surah Baqarah, verse 171} ف ا ن ل م ت ف ع ل وا و ل ن ت ف ع ل وا ف ات ق وا الن ار ال ت ي و ق ود ه ا الن ا س و ال ح ج ار ة أ ع دت ل ل ك اف ر ين و ات ق وا الن ار ال ت ي أ ع دت ل ل ك اف ر ين {Surah Baqarah, verse 24} {Surah Aal Imraan, verse 131} The Mutashaabihaat in this verse lies in the words ف ات ق وا and و ات ق وا. Since ف ا تق وا, و begins with the letter و ات ق وا and ف begins with the letter ف ات ق وا appears before و ات ق وا because the letter ف appears before the letter و in the Arabic alphabet. The first verse is also longer than the second. ف ا م ا ال ذ ين ا م ن وا ف ي ع ل م ون أ ن ه ال ح ق م ن رب ه م و أ م ا ال ذ ين آ ف ر وا ف ي ق ول ون م اذ ا أ ر اد الل ه ب ه ذ ا م ث لا There are two similarities in this verse: {Surah Baqarah, verse 26} {Surah Baqarah, verse 26} ك appears before ا. ك begins with a آ ف ر وا while ا begins with an ا م ن وا 1. in the alphabet. 2. After the ي in the word ف ي ع ل م ون, an ع appears while after the ي in the word ف ي ق ول ون, a ق appears. The letter ع appears before the letter alphabet. in the ق Here the Mutashaabihaat lies in the words لا ي ر ج ع ون and لا ي ع ق ل ون. While in the word لا ي ر ج ع ون, a ر appears after the ي, it is a ع that appears after the ي in the word لا ي ع ق ل ون. Since the letter ر appears before the letter ع in the Arabic alphabet, the word لا ي ر ج ع ون appears before the. لا ي ع ق ل ون word ال ذ ين ي نق ض و ن ع ه د الل ه م ن ب ع د م يث اق ه و ال ذ ين ي نق ض ون ع ه د الل ه م ن ب ع د م يث اق ه {Surah Baqarah, verse 27} {Surah Ra'd, verse 25} 7 8
6 in the second verse و ال ذ ين while ا in the first verse begins with an ال ذ ين begins with a ا. و precedes و in the alphabet. ف ا خ ذ ت ك م الص اع ق ة ف ا خ ذ ت ه م الص اع ق ة {Surah Baqarah, verse 55} {Surah Nisaa, verse 153} و ظ ل ل ن ا ع ل ي ه م ال غ م ا م As in the above examples, the first verse contains the word ع ل ي ك م with ك The.ه, while the other has the word, with a ك the letter ع ل ي ه م appears before the ه in the Arabic alphabet, so the word with the ك will therefore come first. ف ا خ ذ ت ه م ال رج ف ة ف ا خ ذ ت ه م ال رج ف ة {Surah A raaf, verse 78} {Surah A raaf, verse 91} و إ ذ ق ل ن ا اد خ ل وا ه ذ ه ال ق ر ي ة ف ك ل وا م ن ه ا و إ ذ ق ي ل ل ه م اس ك ن وا ه ذ ه ال ق ر ي ة و آ ل وا م ن ه ا {Surah Baqarah, verse 58} {Surah A raaf, verse 161} ف ا خ ذ ت ه م الص ي ح ة {Surah Hijr, verse 73} ف ا خ ذ ت ه م الص ي ح ة ف ا خ ذ ت ه م الص ي ح ة ف ا خ ذ ت ه م ال رج ف ة {Surah Hijr, verse 83} {Surah Mu minoon, verse 41} {Surah A raaf, verse 155} In the above example, the first verse contains the word ف ك ل وا with the letter ف, while the other has the word,و آ ل وا with a.و The ف appears before the و in the Arabic alphabet, so the word with the ف will therefore come first. ف ا خ ذ ت ه م الص اع ق ة {Surah HaaMeem Sajdah, verse 17} {Surah Dhaariyaat, verse 44} و ل ق د ج اءآ م م وس ى ب ال ب ي ن ا ت ث م ات خ ذ ت م ال ع ج ل {Surah Baqarah, verse 92} While the first verse contains the word ف ا خ ذ ت ك م with the letter ك, the others have the word,ف ا خ ذ ت ه م with a.ه The ك appears before the ه in the Arabic alphabet and the word with the ك will therefore come first. و ل ق د ج اءه م م وس ى ب ال ب ي ن ا ت ف اس ت ك ب ر وا ف ي ال ا ر ض {Surah Ankaboot, verse 39} There are 2 similarities in the above verses: و ظ ل ل ن ا ع ل ي ك م ال غ م ا م {Surah Baqarah, verse 57} {Surah A raaf, verse 160} 9 10
7 (1) The first verse contains the word ج اءآ م with the letter ك, while the other has the word,ج اءه م with a.ه The ك appears before the ه in the Arabic alphabet, so the word with the ك will come first. (2) The first verse contains the words ث م ات خ ذ ت م, beginning with the letter ث, while the second verse has the words,ف اس ت ك ب ر وا beginning with the letter.ف The ث appears before the ف in the Arabic alphabet, so the word with the ث will come first. ال ذ ين ا ت ي ن اه م ال ك ت ا ب ي ت ل ون ه ح ق ت لا و ت ه ال ذ ين ا ت ي ن اه م ال ك ت ا ب ي ع ر ف ون ه آ م ا ي ع ر ف ون أ ب ن اءه م وإ ن ف ر يق ا م ن ه م ل ي ك ت م ون ال ح ق و ه م ي ع ل م و ن {Surah Baqarah, verse 121} {Surah Baqarah, verse 146} و إ ن the 2 nd Para is, naturally, after the 7 th. Therefore, the verse with.ال ذ ين خ س ر وا will precede the verse with ف ر يقا أ ن ط ه ر ا ب ي ت ي ل لط اي ف ي ن و ال ع اآ ف ي ن و ال رآ ع الس ج و د و ط ه ر ب ي ت ي ل لط اي ف ي ن و ال ق اي م ي ن و ال رآ ع الس ج ود {Surah Baqarah, verse 125} {Surah Hajj, verse 26} After the word,ل لط اي ف ين the first verse contains the word ال ع اآ ف ين with.ق with a,ال ق اي م ين, while the second verse has the word ع the letter The ع appears before the ق in the Arabic alphabet, so the word with the first. will therefore come ع ال ذ ين ا ت ي ن اه م ال ك ت ا ب ي ع ر ف ون ه آ م ا ي ع ر ف ون أ ب ن اءه م ال ذ ي ن خ س ر وا أ نف س ه م ف ه م لا ي و م ن و ن {Surah An aam, verse 20} و ق ال ت ال ي ه و د ل ي س ت الن ص ار ى ع ل ى ش ي ء {Surah Baqarah, verse 113} There are similarities in all three verses. In the first verse, the word appears ي ع ر ف ون ه, while the word ال ذ ين ا ت ي ن اه م ال ك ت ا ب appears after ي ت ل ون ه ت, the letter ي ت ل ون ه after it in the second and third verses. In the word ع it is the letter,ي ع ر ف ون ه, while in the word ي appears after the letter which appears after the letter ي. Since the letter ت appears before the first. will come ي ت ل ون ه in the Arabic alphabet, the word ع. أ ب ن اءه م In the second two verses, the similarity occurs after the word In the first of the two verses, the word أ ب ن اءه م is followed by 11, و إ ن ف ر يق ا which may be linked to the letter ق of the word سيقول (which starts off the 2 nd Para in which the verse is found). The second of the two verses in which و ق ال ت ال ي ه و د و الن ص ار ى ن ح ن أ ب ن اء الل ه و ق ال ت ال ي ه و د ي د الل ه م غ ل ول ة is found in the 7 th Para and أ ب ن اءه م follows the word ال ذ ين خ س ر وا 12 {Surah Maa idah, verse 18} {Surah Maa idah, verse 64} After the word,ال ي ه ود the first verse contains the word ل ي س ت with the,و with the letter,و الن ص ار ى, the second verse has the word ل letter ل The.ي with the letter ي د الل ه while the third verse has the words appears before the و in the Arabic alphabet and the letter ي appears afterwards, so the word with the ل will therefore come first, followed by.ي and then the letter و the word with the letter

In the other verses, the words ي ع ل م ه م. ي ع ل م ك م and ي ع ل م ه م after the words appear ي ز آ يك م م ن in the third verse, there appears the phrase ر س ولا After the word.م نك م and م ن ه م, whereas the other verses contain the words أ نف س ه م To remember this, note that the letter ن appears twice in the phrase that appears at the beginning of ن, which is akin to the م ن أ نف س ه م. م ن االله the verse in the word ف لا ت م وت ن إ لا و أ نت م م س ل م و ن و لا ت م وت ن إ لا و أ نت م م س ل م و ن {Surah Baqarah, verse 132} {Surah Aal Imraan, verse 102} These four verses are often confused with each other. Take note of the following: The first verse starts with the word ر ب ن ا with the letter ر, the second verse starts with the word آ م ا with the letter,ك the third verse starts with the word ل ق د with the letter ل and the fourth verse starts with the word ه و with the letter.ه These letters appear in this respective sequence in the Arabic alphabet., ك in the first verse contains the letter ا ي ات ك Furthermore, the word the word ا ي ات ن ا in the second verse contains the letter ن and the word ا ي ات ه in the third and fourth verses contain the letter ه. These three letters also appear in this respective sequence in the Arabic alphabet. 13 The first verse begins with the letter ف, while the second begins with the letter.و The ف appears before the و in the Arabic alphabet, so the verse with the ف will therefore come first. و لا ت م ن ع م ت ي ع ل ي ك م و ل ع ل ك م ت ه ت د و ن و ل ي ت م ن ع م ت ه ع ل ي ك م ل ع ل ك م ت ش ك ر و ن لا The first verse contains the word 14 {Surah Baqarah, verse 150} {Surah Maa idah, verse 6}, while the second ا with the letter ت م verse has the word م,و ل ي ت with a.ي The ا appears before the ي in the Arabic alphabet, so the verse with the word لا ت م will come first.
9 إ ن الل ه م ع الص اب ر ي ن و الل ه م ع الص اب ر ي ن {Surah Baqarah, verse 153} {Surah Baqarah, verse 249} The first verse contains the word إ ن with the letter ا, while the second verse has the word,و الل ه with a.و The ا appears before the و in the Arabic alphabet, so the verse with the words إ ن الل ه will come first., أ ي ام أ خ ر Both these verses appear in the same Ruku. After the words the first verse contains the word و ع ل ى with the letter و, while the second verse has the words ي ر يد الل ه with the letter.ي The و appears before the ي in the Arabic alphabet so the verse with و ع ل ى ال ذ ين will. ي ر يد الل ه come first, followed by the verse with و أ نز ل م ع ه م ال ك ت ا ب ب ال ح ق ل ي ح ك م ب ي ن الن اس {Surah Baqarah, verse 213} و إ ذ ا ق ي ل ل ه م ات ب ع وا م ا أ نز ل الل ه ق ال وا ب ل {170 {Surah Baqarah, verse ن ت ب ع م ا أ ل ف ي ن ا ع ل ي ه ا ب اءن ا و أ نز ل ن ا م ع ه م ال ك ت ا ب و ال م يز ا ن ل ي ق و م الن اس ب ال ق س ط {Surah Hadeed, verse 25} و إ ذ ا ق ي ل ل ه م ات ب ع وا م ا أ نز ل الل ه ق ال وا ب ل {21 {Surah Luqmaan, verse ن ت ب ع م ا و ج د ن ا ع ل ي ه ا ب اءن ا أ ل ف ي ن ا. While the word و ج د ن ا and أ ل ف ي ن ا The similarity lies in the words ا. The و starts with the letter و ج د ن ا, the word ا starts with the letter appears before the و in the Arabic alphabet, so the word أ ل ف ي ن ا will come first. After the word,ال ك ت اب the first verse contains the word ب ال ح ق with the letter ب, while the second verse has the words و ال م يز ان with the letter in the Arabic alphabet so the verse with و appears before the ب The.و. The same و ال م يز ان will come first, followed by the verse with ب ال ح ق applies with the words ل ي ح ك م and ل ي ق وم (the letter ح appears before the letter ق in the Arabic alphabet). و اش ك ر وا ل ل ه إ ن آ نت م إ ي ا ه ت ع ب د و ن {Surah Baqarah, verse 172} ف ع دة م ن أ ي ا م أ خ ر و ع ل ى ال ذ ين ي ط يق ون ه {Surah Baqarah, verse 184} و اش ك ر وا ن ع م ت الل ه إ ن آ نت م إ ي ا ه ت ع ب د و ن {Surah Nahl, verse 114} {185 {Surah Baqarah, verse ف ع دة م ن أ ي ا م أ خ ر ي ر ي د الل ه ب ك م ال ي س ر After the word,و اش ك ر وا the first verse contains the word ل ل ه with the.ن with the letter ن ع م ت, while the second verse has the word ل letter ل ل ه in the Arabic alphabet so the verse with ن appears before the ل The. ن ع م ت الل ه will come first, followed by the verse with 15 16

The first verse contains the word,ب ص ير starting with the letter ب, the second verse has the word while the third verse contains the word,خ starting with the letter,خ ب ير in the خ appears before the ب The.ع starting with the letter,ع ل يم Arabic alphabet and is later followed by the letter ع so it is in this sequence that they will appear. أ ل م ت ر إ ل ى ال ذ ي ن أ و ت وا ن ص يب ا م ن ال ك ت ا ب ي د ع و ن إ ل ى آ ت ا ب الل ه ل ي ح ك م ب ي ن ه م {Surah Aal Imraan, verse 23} و م ن ي ش ف ع ش ف اع ة س ي ي ة ي ك ن ل ه آ ف ل م ن ه ا {Surah Nisaa, verse 85} The word ح س ن ة starts with the letter,ح while the word س ي ي ة starts with the letter س and the letter ح appears before the س in the Arabic alphabet. و أ ع د ل ه ع ذ اب ا ع ظ يم ا و أ ع د ل ه م ع ذ اب ا م ه ين ا {Surah Nisaa, verse 93} {Surah Ahzaab, verse 57} The word ع ظ يم ا starts with the letter,ع while the word م ه ين ا starts with the letter م and the letter ع appears before the م in the Arabic alphabet. After the words appear in the three verses. In the word ي د ع و ن, the letter د appears after ي appears after the letter ش, the letter ي ش ت ر ون, in the word ي the letter and in the word ي و م ن ون, the letter ء appears after the letter ي. These are all in alphabetical order. م ن ي ش ف ع ش ف اع ة ح س ن ة ي ك ن ل ه ن ص يب م ن ه ا 17 {Surah Nisaa, verse 85} ف ا ن الل ه آ ا ن ب م ا ت ع م ل و ن خ ب ي را * ي ا أ ي ه ا ال ذ ي ن ا م ن وا 18 {Surah Nisaa, verse 135} These verses all appear in the same Para. In the first verse, the word, in the second ل starting with the letter,لا is followed by the word خ ب ير ا هى while,و starting with the letter,و ل ن verse it is followed by the word the third verse it is followed by the word ي ا أ ي ه ا, starting with the letter in the Arabic alphabet and is later و appears before the ل The.ي followed by the letter ي, so it is in this sequence that they will appear.
