Janis Cooper has taken care of our records for the past twenty three years and we owe her a big thank you for her diligence! David Reynolds now has the files. Reading those old notes gives a sense of the enterprising initiative of the original members. Many boats were home-built to the Snipe class design. Cuttings from the Wichita Eagle show gentlemen in smart trousers and collared shirts, and the ladies Auxiliary entrusted with their own social program and budget (but only for the season they had to return all unused money to the club each year). By 1982 the arms-length relationship with the Auxiliary was long forgotten and Mary Ann Rix was club Commodore. Pictures show tornado damage in 1937; floods in 1998; ice storms of Nothing in Nature seems to have diminished the enthusiasm of the sailors. In 1937, the members had no time for political posturing they were too busy creating a spirit that is available to all of us today. The board included a position of Fleet Physician. I m not sure what he was prescribing, but they were remarkably efficient with their time: At the first meeting on April 1st 1937, Mr. Elwell and Mr. Giwosky were instructed to prepare plans for a floating dock. On April 8th, the plan was reviewed and adopted. By May 1st there was a letter from the Fish and Games Commission authorizing the club to build a dock. On July 9th the minutes record that the dock was completed and moved to its mooring. The cost was $65. There are plenty of interesting documents in the archives, including accounts of the racing between 1947 and 1949, when Ted Wells and Art Lippett were Mid-Western, National and then World Champions in the Snipe racing class. Then there is the transition to the new El Dorado Lake and a name change (the city didn t want to host a Wichita Club!). It took two years of negotiations with the State Park Authority to get our concessionaire s license. The early plans for Boulder Bluff Cove show nothing but a slip and parking for cars and boats. Docks and Cooper s Island came later, and yes it is same family, Janis was Commodore in 1989, and Jerry as Commodore in 1994 negotiated a design and did much of the construction work on the Activity Center. It took a bit longer but the facilities were all created through the imagination, donations and achievements of club members. We owe it to those pioneers to celebrate the anniversary in style. The BOG will be appealing for volunteers to a committee and work teams to put together a year celebrating those early efforts, and provide a worthy cause we can all contribute to. 1 Walnut Valley Sailing Club Bob Peugh (left) from P.E.C. and Gary Pierce, Metro Area Planning Dept. measure the new club ramp If you want to know why your depth finder jumps around in the middle of this lake, take a look at the map of the area before the dam was built, compare the intended conservation pool level with the spillway elevations for Bluestem and the original El Dorado Lake, and see where the old AT&SF rail line and roads lie under water.

Good help, good food, good friends makes an evening fun. Thanks to the Clarks, the Condons, Brian Hakala, the Mackeys, and Paul McCausland for all the work to bring another Shrimp Boil to a happy conclusion. We noticed some new and almost new faces in the crowd. We had three young sailors from this STEP session with us. Welcome to the wonderful world of sailing Piper Fong, Joseph Gadalla, and Kenzie Novak. Following dinner we did some fun question and answers regarding currently used common words or sayings that came from very old nautical terms. No one, not even the wisest among us, got them all correct. Where did the words posh and skyscraper originate? 3 Ladies Race Women s Race Full of Excitement and Fun! The Sailing Activities Committee sponsored a for-fun Women s Race on Saturday, June 18th. The primary rule was that the helmsperson must be female. Any other crew members could be, well, of any variety. The turnout was good, with three keel boats and three centerboard boats. We had youngsters from the STEP program, and at the other end of the scale well, let s not go there. The winds were threatening to be a worry, with gusts over 20 mph! But things calmed a bit, and a delayed start made for a lively race. Keel boats started first, followed by the centerboard boats five minutes later. Two laps each race, two races. The race course was set up across the wind so all sailing was on a beam reach, making for sprints back and forth between the marks. In some cases the racers were head-to-head and head-on, too! Perennial rivals Ardie Condon and Deb Aschbrenner were at it again, pretty much neck-and-neck through both races. Geri provided a rock-solid performance as well, including a broken tiller! The centerboard skippers and crew fought through the winds for the first race. Not a one of them went for a swim. A safety boat was on hand, just in case. Snacks were provided afterward, and a white-elephant gift exchange was held. The men that crewed for some of the women were presented with bikinis, and they were modeled beautifully as you can see in the pictures. A wonderful set of pictures and videos can be found at the following link: A few of our favorites are included here for your viewing pleasure. 3

4 July 4 th Activities Teams Needed! Cardboard Boats Each team will be provided with cardboard boxes and one roll of duct tape. Bring your own tools and life jackets (and paddles/oars if you have them). We will have a skippers meeting at 1:30 PM. At 2:00 PM, each team will start and will have one hour to complete their boat. After the one-hour build time, all teams will float their boats (with one or more people in each of them). The boat that stays afloat the longest will be the winning team. However, the main objective is to have a lot of fun participating or watching. The last few boats will be required to paddle back and forth between the docks and shore until only one is left floating! Ice Cream will be provided afterwards. Please call Ernie Condon at to sign up so we know how much cardboard and duct tape to bring. Bring your model sailboats out to the lake. If you don t have one, come and try ours! You can t hurt them, and they are a lot of fun! Plan to be there at 1:00 and we will have fun while the cardboard boat teams are building their boats. 4

JUNIOR SAILING REGATTA by Deann Gadalla This summer the junior sailing program (STEP) at the WVSC will join the conservation organization 'Sailors for the Sea' and host a 'Clean Regatta' on July 21st. The name of the regatta will be "REGATTAZILLA, as it's all about being green." Our youth sailing camp sailors have made conscientious efforts this summer to recognize and implement best conservation practices, to help become better stewards of the environment and lakes. Some implemented best practices have been: 1) the elimination of single use plastic water bottles and providing water refilling stations, 2) recycling various materials, 3) the elimination of single use plastic bags, and 4) complete elimination of any Styrofoam products. During the 'Clean Regatta,' the participating sailors must implement a predetermined number of conservation/recycling best practices to meet the criteria for a 'Clean Regatta.' 8 CREATING A DRIPLESS STUFFING BOX by Chris Collins Modern dripless propeller shaft seals work great, but they can be expensive. If they fail, they cannot be serviced without a haul-out. Some ocean cruisers report this to be a disadvantage, preferring the ability to replace the packing in their stuffing boxes while at sea. I suggest that none of us like having seawater leak into our bilge. Judikay and I have two sailboats, and I have modified the stuffing box on each to accept marine grease on the seawater side of the packing. Seawater pressure keeps the grease against the packing. The shaft seal in each boat is now dripless and well lubricated. The cost of the modification was near zero! In my research, I learned this method is common in the UK and nearly unheard of in the US. Note, most automotive grease is soap based and should not be used where it might contact seawater. The shaft log on our Catalina 30 is fiberglass. Since fiberglass made with polyester resin will absorb moisture, I was concerned about grease being absorbed and weakening the structure. I sanded the inside of the shaft log and then applied multiple coats of epoxy as a barrier coat. Our ketch has a stainless steel shaft log with the cutlass bearing pressed into the outer end of the tube. Greasing the stuffing box also greases the cutlass bearing and fills the clearance between the shaft and the bearing. The cutlass bearing is normally lubricated with seawater. That works great until the critters plug the intake ports, blocking the seawater. Then both the shaft and cutlass bearing suffer wear from extra friction. On each boat, I replaced the connecting hose with the extra strong Buck Algonquin connecting hose. My jury is still out on how the marine grease will affect the hose. I used stainless steel grease fittings (Zerks) that are threaded with 1/8 NPT. A tap can be obtained at most hardware stores. I installed the grease fitting as far aft as possible leaving just enough room for a wrench. I keep a spare fitting and a wrench on board. If the adjusting nut should reach the fitting when tightened, I will add more packing. See the accompanying photo for the location of the grease fitting in the stuffing box. Our ketch had sat, and does sit for months without the engine running. The previous owner had replaced the propeller shaft, and yet I found it corroded under the packing. This was a classic case of being wet with saltwater and lacking oxygen. I have learned this is very common when the propeller shaft does not rotate regularly. Our local propeller shop was kind enough to smooth the corroded area so I was able to postpone the expense of replacing the shaft until the next haul out. The resulting recess in the shaft makes it very difficult to install the packing. I don t recommend the smoothing process if it will create a recess. My next question was how would greasing the stuffing box cause or prevent shaft corrosion? I contacted Steve D'Antonio of Steve D'Antonio Marine Consulting, Inc. with just that question. Steve is an expert on stainless steel corrosion. Steve replied back with wonderful and lengthy information including the statement, Grease will not promote corrosion on a stainless steel alloy shaft as it excludes both air and water, the latter is needed for crevice corrosion to occur. If you elect to install a grease fitting in your stuffing box, my suggestions are as follows: Install a new heavy duty connecting hose, apply epoxy barrier coat to any fiberglass that might come in contact with the grease, and grease the packing as you install it to insure it will be well lubricated when the shaft first rotates. Use a grease gun to pump as much grease into the shaft log as possible prior to launching. I.e. make an effort to keep saltwater in the sea by filling the shaft log with grease. For the adjustment process, begin with a pretty loose adjusting nut. Tighten after seeing grease leak from seal. Ultimately, snug the nut so grease is not slung about as the shaft rotates, but not so tight that much heat is created. The thick grease will create some heat, so expect warm. Too hot to touch would not be acceptable. Use your hand or an infrared thermometer to monitor closely and confirm the stuffing box does not get hot. Use a grease gun to add marine grease frequently as needed to keep seawater in the sea and out of the shaft log. If this method does not work well for you, simply loosen the adjusting nut and let her drip normal. Chris Collins owns, sails, and maintains a Catalina 30 on El Dorado Lake in Kansas and a 45 foot ketch in Rockport, Texas. 8 IN THE BEGINNING by Gary Pierce A study and discussions about possibly moving the Wichita Sailing Club to El Dorado Lake began in Paul Burris was Commodore and he suggested the Board to begin studying the possibility of moving. In 1982 Mary Ann Rix became Commodore and that is when the decision was definitely made to make the move and change the name of the club to better reflect the location of the club. In 1982 the first draft of a concessionaire s license was developed with the State Parks department. The first choice for location was to move to the cove that was located west of the Shady Creek Marina. The marina was the only one at that time that had water, sewer and electricity. There was also an abandoned black top road that ran directly to this cove. This choice of location was not in favor with the marina or the State officials. The marina operator did not want the club on the lake at all (competition) and the State Park Department was the lease holder of the marina and did not want the marina to fail because of business going to WVSC. There were many meetings with the State Representatives from the lake district. Political pressure finally had the State Park officials give us a choice of another location: the cove we now occupy. One major requirement was written into the concessionaire license; there would be no power boats allowed in the club facility, only sailboats. In 1983 Tom Schroder became Commodore and signed the first Concessionaire license dated September 9, The club name was officially changed December 19, 1983 from the Wichita Sailing Club to the Walnut Valley Sailing Club. In 1984 Bob Peugh became Commodore. He was in charge of the property survey that determined where the club is presently located. Ken Rix and Gary Pierce assisted Bob with the survey work and established the location of the first launch ramp. The winter of 1984 saw the lake freeze over in the cove to 11" in depth. Bob said this would be the perfect time to pour the launch ramp and establish our presence at the lake. Continued on Page 9

9 Extend the Life of Wheel Bearings by Chris Collins In a seventeen year career as a mechanic, I performed preventative maintenance on, and replaced many wheel bearings. I have personally acquired several boat trailers over the years, and every one of them, without fail, came with one or more bad wheel bearings. I have been forced to replace wheel bearings on the side of the road and in a dusty farm field. All but one boat trailer came with some type of bearing buddies installed. Simply having bearing buddies will not protect wheel bearings. Those previous owners did not perform proper maintenance. On a car, periodically packing wheel bearings is good preventative maintenance. In my opinion, that is not adequate for a boat trailer unless it is performed every time the trailer is pulled from the water. I am way too lazy for that. The secret to extending the life of boat trailer wheel bearings is to keep the water out of the bearings. Basic physics tells us that water can t get to the wheel bearings if the pressure in the hub is greater than the external water pressure. Simply greasing the wheel bearings will not increase the pressure in the hub. It is nearly impossible to completely fill a hub with grease to eliminate all air pockets. Pockets of air can compress, letting water in. Submersing a sun baked or road hot hub in cool water will rapidly lower the hub temperature, shrink the air pockets, and actually suck water into the hub. The best solution for this rapid cooling issue is to let the hubs cool off before submersing the axles. That is difficult to accomplish in hot weather, and the water is nearly always cooler than the hubs. To increase the pressure inside the hub, a spring loaded piston is needed. The spring is compressed when grease is injected into the hub with a grease gun. The strength of the spring determines the pressure in the hub. Because a grease gun can generate enough pressure to push the seal out, there must be a dependable bypass or relief that opens when the spring is fully compressed. Several different axle systems have grease fittings. Not all will maintain the needed pressure inside the hub. I have a Harbor Freight trailer which has grease fittings on the inner side of the hub. These are only good for pushing the seals out of the hub. I have built two trailers using Dexter axles with the E-ZLube feature. These have a hole through the spindle and actually work very well to grease the wheel bearings, but they do not maintain an increased pressure in the hub. Axles fitted with bearing buddies usually have a piston, spring, and a relief port to prevent over pressuring. These have very little value for greasing the wheel bearings. They do help the owner increase the pressure when needed, but they are not magic. They require much attention from the owner. Bearing buddies have earned a bad reputation because of improper use. A young salesman at BRC Bearing adamantly told me that they will ruin my wheel bearings. According to him, I would be better off if I discarded them. I learned he has no experience with a boat trailer. A sailor friend told me they won t work unless you drill a hole in the spindle. He seemed to think that bearing buddies and Dexter s E-ZLube function the same. They do not, and they have two different purposes. I believe that most people expect more from bearing buddies than they are designed to deliver. The only purpose of bearing buddies is to provide the owner/operator a method of increasing the pressure inside the hub. Often this pressure leaks off and they need to be pumped up again. I pump mine up just before my trailer goes in the water and I top them off again when it comes out of the water. Excessive? Perhaps, but it works well for me. I have never had bearings go bad after I started this process. Bearing grease of different types/brands should not be mixed. I made this mistake by adding new grease to already clean looking wheel bearings on a customer s car. It came back later and the thick grease had turned to liquid. I have been told by a senior manufacturer at BG Products that most automotive grease is soap based, and although more expensive, marine grease is a better choice for boat trailer wheel bearings. Grease seals are made from rubber or neoprene like material, and some have a metal casing. The ones with a metal casing fit much tighter in the hub and are less likely to be blown out. This is especially important on trailers with brakes because you can t observe the seals to confirm they stay installed. Here are my recommendations. Clean the bearings and hubs with a solvent. Inspect and replace any questionable bearing. I am not convinced that more expensive bearings will last any longer. So far, I have had good luck with less expensive bearings purchased online. Pack the wheel bearings either by hand or with a packing cone. Install new seals that have a metal casing. Tapered roller wheel bearings need a tiny bit of play. This is not true for ball bearings as they must be preloaded. Grab the tire top and bottom to feel the play. Adjust the nut pretty snug. Spin the wheel. Then loosen the nut until play can be felt by rocking the wheel. Install the cotter pin (or other locking device) at the snuggest position that permits a tiny bit of play to be felt. Install a genuine Bearing Buddy on each hub. I have used three different brands and I find the genuine article is worth the expense. They fit my hubs tight, the relief works well, and I can t over pressure them. Initial towing on the road seems to work out the air. It will be necessary to top them off several times before they stay pumped up for a while. Obviously, use the same grease that was used to pack the bearings. Make sure springs are fully compressed prior to submersion and check again when it comes out of the water. For me, the extra effort has paid off well. If you have Dexter axles with E-ZLube, inject an excessive amount of grease after each emersion to flush out any water that might have found its way into the bearings. In the Beginning, cont. from Page 8 So with considerable calculation and confidence and much hesitation by Ken and myself, Bob designed and calculated how to build a form that could be constructed on the ice precisely where we wanted it to be under water. The 2x6 form was constructed on top of a 1 1/2" thick layer of Styrofoam. This engineering wonder was calculated by Bob to have the heat from the curing concrete melt the ice over several days and when cured to a solid state the concrete would drop through the melted ice to the bottom of the lake establishing the 1st boat ramp and the beginning of the Walnut Valley Sailing Club. 9 Also amazing was when Bob instructed the concrete truck driver to back out on the ice to pour concrete in the forms which were 70' long.
