1 March 2016 wine and canvas Official Publication of Alamitos Bay Yacht Club Volume 89 Number 3 Kathy Robinson photos Wine and canvas seem like a pretty unlikely combination wine and cheese sound much more compatible but add in paint, brushes, sumptuous snacks and good friends and you have the makings of an outstanding evening! And with the addition of art instructor Rosemary Bandes of Destination Art, the creative juices were flowing, not to mention the wine. Rosemary guided and encouraged us in creating individual paintings. Since most participants brought their own subject matter to paint the final products ranged from Terri Bishop s abstract sail boats to Kathy Robinson s version of Starry Night! Although not all of us were planning on hanging the recently completed works in our living rooms we all agreed that it was a fun and relaxing way to spend a Thursday night. inside Manager s Corner 2 Commodore s Comments. 2 Vice Verses. 3-4 Fleet Captain s Log. 4 Junior Sailing.. 5 Hails From the Fleets. 6-7 sav e the date SCYA Manning Regatta. 2 manager s corner Hello there! It s hard to believe it s March already. We ve got quite a few events on the calendar to look forward to this month, including two regattas, starting with the SCYA Manning Regatta on March 5 th & 6 th, and then the Laser Midwinters West to follow two weeks later on March 17 th, 18 th & 19 th. Race Management is always looking for volunteers for these regattas, so if you re not sailing in these or future regattas and still want to participate, get in touch with Fleet Captain David Schack, and he can point you in the right direction. There s a variety of ways one can help and it s a great way to meet new friends. We ve also got the General Membership Meeting on March 18th, hosted by the Lido Fleet. The menu will be Fish and Chips with coleslaw, and the program will feature speaker Sam Bell regaling us with his tales of crossing the Pacific Ocean while participating in last year s Transpac. Please be sure to get your dinner reservation in early by either calling the office, using the website, or ing Sheila at abyc.sheila@gmail.com. It really helps us out when members make their reservations in advance, so please be sure to make your reservation today. Finally, looking at the end of the month, we ve got the Easter Brunch falling on March 27 th. This champagne brunch is an ABYC tradition that s fun for the whole family, complete with an egg hunt and an appearance by the Easter Bunny himself. Check out the flyer to see this year s brunch fare and schedule of activities. Remember to get your reservation in by March 17 th to get the special early-bird price. You don t want to miss it! Tori commodore s compass Wow! The members of Alamitos Bay Yacht Club sure are doing things right! And it is showing in the number of new members which have joined in the past two months! Could it be the great social events like the Super Bowl Party which was organized by Jore Suarez, or The Wine and Canvas event (I think the wine came from a bottle and the canvas did not have to be stitched.) Maybe the regattas like Mid-Winters or our own local Ocean Fleet Races. If I had to place a bet though, I would say it is the way we members make our guests feel welcomed when they come to the club for whatever reason it may be! We have a tradition of being a welcoming club who likes to share our little piece of paradise with those that may come from just down the peninsula or from another country thousands of miles away. That is why ABYC is the Place to Be has become synonymous with friendly attitudes and great sailing the world over! Please feel free to join other volunteers in their endeavors to host great social and sailing events at the club! Just take a look at the calendar on the WEB Site ( and sign up to help out! Your assistance is the backbone of our club! I know that the Manning Regatta is coming up as well as the Laser Midwinters West. On the social side, Easter Brunch is on the horizon and volunteers are always welcome the day before for set up (last year I learned how to fold a napkin into a bunny rabbit!) April 16 th and 17 th is our annual Spring Spruce Up! The Vice Commodore, Steve Smith is in charge of this. This is that one weekend a year that we really count on you coming down and getting the plethora of small and great projects done so that our club look spick and span for opening day! Come on down and join me as I scrape and paint, polish and buff, dig and plant, and then have a great late lunch and a beverage. Then stand back and admire our work! Recently, I asked all of you that have yachts in the yard to please come by and check them out. There are still many boats which have swimming pools in their covers. The Migratory birds are starting to look in those pools for small fish to feed their young! Come on down, enjoy your piece of paradise! Latham Bell Got Sails? The Juniors are collecting old sails to recycle into duffle bags and other gear. Clean out your boat and garage! Simply drop off your old sails in the designated collection bin in the junior room. sou wester march2016 page 2

3 vice verses continued page 4 The February General Membership Meeting featured an appetizing dinner of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, biscuits, cole slaw and cookies. Attendance was on the light side so there was plenty of left overs if anyone wanted seconds. Latham lead the brief meeting which consisted of Fleet reports by Stephen Bloemeke for the Juniors, Kathy Reed for the Lidos and your author for the Lasers. Membership Committee Chairman, Rob Stropky introduced Robin Townsend who introduced new members Barbara Hounsell and Alex Crossfor presentation of their ABYC Burgee. Tim Carter presented the club with a burgee from the Saint Andrews Bay Yacht Club in Panama City FL. Tim had been at St. ABYC in connection with the selection of the Viper as replacement for the venerable Flying Scot as the Gulf Yachting Association boat for interclub competition. We also received a new burgee from when Latham Bell exchanged burgees with Chris Reno from North East River Yacht Club in North East MD. 4 more vice commodore from page 3 After the meeting, your author made a brief, albeit technology challenged preview of the soon to be activated ABYC website. The new website has been in development by Jeff McDermaid in conjunction with a professional web designer over the past several months. The site has a fresh new look with readily accessed tabs and menus for members and guests to find out what is happening at ABYC. Watch for announcement of the new website release soon. Mark your calendars for the March General Membership Meeting as Kathy Reed and the hosting Lido Fleet have a fun line-up of entertainment for members and guests. Don t miss this one, Friday evening March 18 th. Boatyard Yard Rules& Waiting List The ABYC Board of Directors and fellow members are grateful to those of you who recently made an effort to bring your boats, trailers, dollies and dry mooring spaces in line with the Yard Rules. The Board will continue its efforts to monitor the yard with an eye to enforce the Yard Rules and keep our yard neat and tidy. If you see a condition in the yard that requires a remedy, please do not hesitate to bring it to the attention of the club office or a Board Member. The boat yard is certainly a valuable asset of our club and an attraction for existing and prospective members who desire a dry mooring space for a sailboat with an easy access to our wonderful sailing waters. This asset is in such demand, we have more than thirty (30) member names on our Waiting List for a dry mooring space in the yard. If for any reason you find you are no longer using your boat, please consider other options for storing your boat so another member may enjoy this special privilege of membership at ABYC. Steve Smith fleet captain s log Patience has a new bottom (well almost). Patience was hauled out and received two new coats of bottom paint as well as receiving some additional TLC from our friends at Marina Shipyard. Patience s topsides will receive some attention soon as well. Eric has been working hard on keeping the Whalers operational. Thanks to Kevin Brown, we have new tow lines available for most of the larger Whalers so if the need arises competitors can be towed to and from the courses. Regatta season is upon us and I am looking forward to working with many of you in putting on some great regattas this years. There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer for race management whether it is helping with shoreside activities or on the water. If you were unable to make it to the whaler training on 2/28 don t worry, there will be more opportunities to learn what race management is all about. I d like to go over a few things regarding on-the-water volunteering and race management. If you are scheduled to help out at a regatta please remember the following: Plan on arriving early, especially on the first day of the regatta, and meet with your fellow race management volunteers-you will receive further instructions and your assignments from the PRO if you don t already have them. Bring plenty of liquids-bring refillable water bottles instead of plastic bottles. Equipment will be ready for you to take to your assigned boats. Please do not take equipment out of other carts or the container. If you find that you are missing equipment, please let one of the Port Captains know and they will make every attempt to get you exactly what you need. If something breaks, gets lost or doesn t work properly please let one of the Port Captains and the PRO knowotherwise we have no way of knowing if something needs to be fixed or replaced. Inspect the boat before you leave the dock to make sure you have all the required equipment on board and make sure there s fuel in the tanks. Bring proper clothing-even though our weather is pretty mild it can get a chilly on the water at times. Remove trash from the boat each day and place it in one of the trash cans on the dock. Place radios and hand-bearing compasses in the designated box which is usually placed on top of one of the dock boxes adjacent to Patience. Thanks for your help and support, see you on the water. 5 junior perspective Last weekend I competed in my first Laser regatta, the Ullman/Frost up in Ventura but we actually raced in Oxnard due to storm damage at the Ventura marina. The tow out was fast because we were running late and thus my Laser got a lot of water in it and it took a while to splash out with my foot. On the first day, there was about 5-8 knots and a lot of current pushing you over the start line. The waves were sizable but rolling and very smooth. It was easy to get swept of the course with the strong current on port tack and then have to reach back to the top mark, which happened to me in the first race. The left side had a couple decent lifts coming from the islands and if you didn t sail in the pressure, you got sucked to the back of the fleet. On the downwind legs, leeward heel was necessary, otherwise the sail wouldn t fill and the waves would bring the boom over. Not ideal and at the downwind leg of the 3rd race, the wind died and thankfully the PRO ended the day there. He wasn t so nice later. The second day saw about 0-5 knots and the wind was coming in from a different direction than the waves, and it was shifty. The few races that were started were abandoned and there was a lot of postponement between starts. Several sailors had to be towed up to the line. Finally, the Pro called it quits for the day and we went in, having only sailed 3 races for the entire regatta. My first Laser regatta went okay, and I came home satisfied that I went out of my comfort zone. It was fun! Tom Morel junior program board rep Believe it or not, SUMMER is here. Well, not technically, but in terms of planning the year, it sure is. The Junior Advisory Committee ( JAC ) with the direction of Allie Blecher is deep into securing the Summer Program Coaching Staff. Meaning that it is time to start spreading the word for all of us to let our friends and family know of this fantastic sailing program that has something to offer every level of sailor. All of our Jr. Sailing Programs are open to Non-Members and in most cases our club owned sailboats are available for charter. For more information, please contact Allie at abyc.jrprogram@gmail.com, or at ABYC (562) x22. Alan Peoples, the Jr. Commodore addressed the Flag Officers and Board of Directors at the February meeting and updated them of the Jr. Board of Director s activities. With upcoming exciting Social Activities, innovative Fund Raising, and various Regattas and Clinics, Parents need to be aware and let their kids know of those activities to increase participation. Please support their efforts. Our monthly check the box participants contributed a nice amount, but the list is not growing high enough! Please consider a simple ongoing donation of $5 (or more) by checking the box at the bottom of your monthly yacht club bill. This really does help the Jr. Monetary Fund and eases the burden of asking the Club to release money from the Capital Fund that is needed to maintain boats and ensure that the coaches have the equipment that they need to do their jobs. Many thanks! Steve Bloemeke o Thank you to all who continue to donate sails to the Junior Sail Recycling Program. We just sent in nine boxes weighing over 350 pounds! This spring look for our return shipment of great bags by Sea Bags of Maine. Jenn Golison Please join the Junior Fleet at the General Meeting on April 15 with a presentation by ABYC member Howard Hamlin about the exciting world of skiff sailing. sou wester march 2016 page 5

8 california dreamin match race Ihad the honor of racing in the Barney Flam Perpetual Regatta this weekend as part of the California Dreamin Match Race Series. Thanks to our skipper Shane Young and our team of Mark Ryan, John Hill, Ian Paice and Tyler Webb for a great weekend. We finished in a 3 way tie for 1st and ended up a very respectable 2nd. Steve Flam hails from the fleets START CLINIC : We had 21 attendees learning starting tips and upwind leg strategy and tactics from Fleet Six s own Two time National Champion Mark Ryan. Coach Ryan put the fleet through intense starting drills and taught the fleet boat handling skills and positioning. Everyone s starting improved immensely. A great class is one that can effect change we have changed our entire approach to the start, said Pixie and Rob Hartman of Lido Sunny Side Up. After the morning session of drills we had a brief discussion during lunch and then went back out and did more starts and more short practice races. Bill Moore and crew Daniel Lasker were dominating the afternoon racing until an equipment failure knocked them out of the action. March 12 th will be the next clinic on mark roundings, downwind leg and finishing. Cindy Heavrin photos MIDWINTERS: Light and shifty conditions made the course a challenging chess game that would have made even chess champ Garry Kasparov sigh. Sailing surgeons like Mike Ryan, Bruce Golison and Mike Shea dissected the light and shifty conditions with surgical precision. B Fleet had the Taugher touch and the calculated Conn maneuvers with young William Mueller pushing the envelope and Cindy Heavrin s driving debut. All B fleet boats scored a bullet in the first day of action with Team Taugher ending the day on top. A Fleet results; After two days racing in super light air Kevin Thomas turned up the heat and finished in 3 rd, with Bruce Golison 2 nd, Mark Ryan finishing 1 st. B fleet had the Family Mueller winning top honors and Tracy Conn in second. Rumor is that Pam was seen crewing for Tracy on Sunday. Go Pam! sou wester march2016 page 6 continued next page

10 super bowl abyc On Sunday February 7th as the rest of the nation and world was preparing to watch the Super Bowl at homes and bars we, at ABYC, were preparing to watch the Bowl at our club. No matter which team, the Broncos or the Panthers, you were going to be cheering for there was a feeling of increasing tension on the second deck! Maybe it was not for the game its self but rather the squares which you had numbers on. The wait was palatable! Speaking of palatable the smells generated by the wide variety of snacks being place on the tables were amazing. The snacks ranged from Kettle corn to a fresh Salmon Ceviche. Jorge Suarez had organized the event. It was not just watching the game! He had Patty Williams organizing the squares that were for sale as well as creating a wonderful historical display of the Bowl game. Many members enjoyed the day. Jorge announced the square winners at each of the quarters. He also announced the winner of the hors d oeuvres contest. It was won by the fresh Salmon Ceviche. Once again with the help of wonderful volunteers, ABYC was the place to be on Super Bowl Sunday!
