2 hot the COMMODORE S COMMENTS Now, time for some fun in Summertime! Summer always begins with a bang at HIYC with two great events on the same day: a sailboat regatta & a party! Our Two-handed Regatta and annual Cheeseburger and Paradise party opened the summer season this past Memorial Day weekend with great success. Immediately thereafter, HIYC s annual Sail Camp starts up for the month of June. Just when you thought you could catch your breath, the Summer Quarterly Meeting with Low Country Boil & Raft-up on Saturday, June 10, keeps the party sailing! Racing continues in June on the 24th, with the 2nd Annual Never Done Summer Regatta. Before you know it, our always fun Independence Day Celebration will be happening on Saturday, July 1st, this year! All that we do at Harbor Island could only be done with a whole host of volunteers. I want to mention a couple of these members here for their long, celebratory service in making our club what it is. We ve enjoyed many a great party due in no small part to our Social Chair and lovely Mom-to be, Katie Griswold. Katie is taking a leave of absence from Social Chair in order to devote full time to her & Drew s impending new addition. Cheeseburger was her last event for awhile. Let Katie & her staff of volunteers know what a great job she has done over these past several years! Thank you, Katie, so much! Tim Naeser has been our Chief Race Officer for several years. Even before I became Commodore, Tim began asking me to consider finding his replacement. Somehow, I just kept forgetting. Now that Tim s son has graduated, Tim and Rose desire to travel (or maybe Rose just wants that Vette out of the garage). Tim played an integral roll in developing the HIYC Race Packet for our PROs. This packet makes running a regatta much easier for novice as well as seasoned race officers. Tim has been THE GUY that makes sure we have regattas and that PROs are well prepared. Please offer your gratitude for a job well done the next time you see Tim! As fearful of this void in our regatta administration might have become, we can now all breath a sigh of relief! A seasoned race veteran, Jim Doran, has volunteered to fill that void left by Tim s retirement. Jim learned to sail at Boy Scout Camp at 17 and seriously began racing sailboats in He once owned Par Avion (now owned by Leif Asgeirsson on B Dock). Jim s list of boats owned and raced have included a J28, a Tartan 40, a Northstar 500, as well as his current Tartan 31, Messing About. Obtaining a law degree some 40 years ago from the University of Tennessee, Jim is one of the top litigation attorneys in Tennessee for Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis. Jim is married to Ramsey and has 4 stepchildren. I wouldn t mess with him. Jim would appreciate volunteers stepping up for the regatta season volunteering as PROs and race committee members. His jdoranjr@bellsouth.net

3 Look guys, I didn t mean it, I was just kidding I meant to do that Don, when can I get in the boat? *** Dock Slip and Mooring Waiting List *** Ahoy, fellow Club Members. 4 VOLUNTEERS Volunteers Jim Waller, Jim Doran, Marc Fortune, Steve Vague, Joe Ballard, Greg Theriot, Randall Butler, and Laura Johnson donated their time to take some boys and girls from the University School of Nashville sailing down to Sam s this month. 9 NOTICE OF RACE 2nd Annual Never Done Summer Race June 24, 2017

10 *** 4TH OF JULY *** (Really the 1st but we will think of it as the 4th) This year we will celebrate the 4th of July on Saturday the 1st of July. We will still be open on the 4th, but you will be on your own. Senior Governor Sean Theriot will take the helm for this much anticipated event. Hopefully this year the weather will be more cooperative than it was last year and we will be able to get the fireworks off before everyone hits the rack.

11 Sea Scout News As I write this, it is mid-may and our numbers are growing. Which is not unusual for this time of the year with the longer days and warm winds of late spring. It is always interesting to watch. It also keeps us busy teaching new skills for all these new Scouts. At last night's Scout meeting we were scheduled to spend most of our time on boat maintenance. However, it was 85 degrees with winds from the SSW at 12 gusting to 15. The scheduled maintenance will have to wait until another Thursday evening when the wind is not so good. A small amount of cleaning was completed and then both Triad and Makena were made ready for an evening sail. The number of crew for each boat was perfect. Then they kept coming. More kids and more kids. By the time we left the dock, we had seven on Triad and Ten on Makena. I should note that five of our regular attending Scouts were not at that meeting as they were out of town with their families. All had a grand time that Thursday evening but with that many on each boat only about half the kids actually get involved in running the boat. Learning to sail is a huge amount of what we are about. So if it's a Thursday evening with good wind you might think about coming out to go sailing with these wonderful youth in your boat. We would sure love to have a few extra hands to help from time to time. By the time you read this several of our members will have had a weeklong trip to the Gulf Coast. Among other things, they are scheduled to go sailing with a local Sea Scout ship on Lake Pontchartrain. That group has two 30-foot sailboats they sail on that large body of water. The big surprise was the total lack of any other Sea Scout Ships in that area. There is also the potential that our Scouts will get to go sailing on a 28-foot E Scow sailboat while they are down there. And yes they have planned a day on the beach along with a visit to the WW2 Museum. Then for the first 5 weeks of summer, we will lose five of our boys to Boxwell Boy Scout camp where they will be working as counselors. While the pay is not very good at Boxwell, the opportunities to learn and to grow are worth far more than any paycheck and although we will miss sailing with these young men for a few weeks, I know it is going to be a grand summer of sailing for our Scouts. Andy Griswold
