2010 PROGRESS REPORT DIVERS ALERT NETWORK

CHAIRMAN S LETTER PROMISES KEPT Dear DAN members, supporters and friends: DAN s mission statement is not simply a summary of what Divers Alert Network does, it is a promise. It is a promise to divers, to the dive industry, to educators and medical professionals. The last couple of years have brought a lot of changes to DAN, all of which were made to ensure we remain a strong, viable organization able to keep the promise our Mission statement makes to you. In the Progress Report we brought you up to speed on those changes and outlined what was still to come. The outline, too, was a promise, and the balance of 2010 was spent keeping it. DAN s MISSION DAN helps divers in need with medical emergency assistance and promotes diving safety through research, education, products and services. Our Mission efforts in Medicine, Research and Education focused on expanding the reach of our nonprofit services. Work progressed on the upgrade to our Medical Services Call Center, keeping it on track for the upgrade s completion in 2011, and the medics who man the 24-hour DAN Emergency Hotline were offered more continuing education opportunities to ensure they have the most up-todate information available when you need them. Dan Orr, president of DAN, led the in-person efforts to amplify DAN s safety message, launching a nationwide tour to conduct presentations at trade shows and dive clubs. Along the way, he is visiting dive businesses and other groups to determine what else DAN can do to support the diving industry and diver safety. DAN Medicine also spent a great deal of time expanding its presence in the field, attending and presenting lectures not only at dive shows but also at medicine-related conferences around the country. The goal with each appearance was twofold: to educate the medical industry about dive medicine and to expand the list of professionals participating in the DAN Physician Referral Network. DAN Education and Medicine continued to work together on the Harvesting Divers Project launched in early 2010, traveling to other countries to gather information on how divers in different regions make their living in the water, as well as how they deal with the challenges such livings present. But we re not just gathering information; DAN is putting its Recompression Chamber Assistance Program (RCAP) to use, working with hyperbaric facilities in those regions to give harvesting divers the best care possible DAN Progress Report

DAN Education worked close to home, too, revamping its educational and continuing medical education opportunities. In addition to the existing list of DAN Education offerings, 2010 saw the launch of the Diver Medical Technician (DMT) continuing education program and Dive Medicine for Divers: Part 3, the third and final phase of the Dive Medicine for Divers (DMFD) course. Both were designed to take divers ever-deeper into the education they continue to request. DAN Research finished the year with its ongoing development of studies and projects aimed at producing results in five years or less. While DAN will never be anything but thorough in its research, it understands the questions divers have now and their need for answers, and we are working to provide them in as timely and accurate a manner as possible. DAN Holdings, the business operation subsidiary created in 2009 to provide financial support to DAN s nonprofit efforts, was just as busy in the closing months of In addition to researching, developing and finding products and services that will launch and help to increase divers safety beginning in 2011, the redesigned Alert Diver magazine and its online counterpart, AlertDiver.com, continued to grow in popularity, becoming widely recognized as the industry s leading publication by the end of the year. The year closed with the cementing of the strong management team assembled in , when William M. Ziefle was hired as the president and CEO of DAN Holdings. Nicholas Bird was named CEO and chief medical officer of DAN, Inc., and Dan Orr continues in his role as president of DAN, Inc. It is a remarkable assemblage of leadership. Individually, each brings a great deal of experience and talent to DAN, but together they create a leadership team with a depth of experience unparalleled in DAN s history. DAN made a promise to be here for divers and to improve dive safety. It s a promise we ve kept for more than 30 years, and everything done in 2010 continues to keep it. Every change, step and plan strengthened DAN, which in turn strengthens our ability to be here for you. I hope you see the fulfillment of our promise in the following pages, as it remains our privilege to serve divers and the diving industry. Thank you for your continued support. It s been the key to our success, and as long it s there, DAN will always be here for you. That s a promise. Respectfully yours in safe diving, Joe Poe, Chairman DAN, Inc. Board of Directors 2010 DAN Progress Report 3

DAN MEDICINE DAN Medicine remains at the core of our nonprofit services, responsible for the 24-hour DAN Emergency Hotline, the DAN Medical Information Line and serving as the first resource for divers seeking information. EXPANDING THE NETWORK DAN spent a great deal of time in the field in 2010 increasing its presence not only at diving-focused events like trade shows and diver days. DAN Medicine also traveled to several medicine-related conferences to present information on dive medicine and the resource DAN can be to the medical community. By doing so, DAN contributed to the education of the medical professionals tasked with caring for injured divers and expanded the field of participants in the DAN Physician Referral Program. DAN helps divers in need with emergency DAN Progress Report DAN finished 2010 by completing the integration of its new multicenter partners, the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) and the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), into the support rotation for the DAN Emergency Hotline and by continuing to upgrade the Medical Services Call Center. medical BRINGING DAN TO YOU assistance. DAN is always in high demand with divers, receiving countless invitations each year to appear at dive club meetings, fundraisers and special events. It is impossible to accept every invitation, but DAN Medicine found a close alternative with the launch of its new webinar outreach program. Utilizing live webinar technology to interact with anyone who wants to have DAN present at an event, the webinars are offered at no cost and allow an audience to participate in a presentation followed by a real-time question-and-answer session. THE HARVESTING DIVERS PROJECT First brought to the attention of DAN Members in the Fall 2010 issue of Alert Diver, DAN Medicine and Education continue to work together and with local communities to improve the health and safety of harvesting divers and to publicize the problem. In addition to engaging DAN s RCAP program to enhance the care injured divers receive, we are collaborating with other interested groups, including environmental programs, to explore and provide information on alternative means of making a living that do not require those who dive to risk their lives simply to feed their families. THE 2011 PROMISE For DAN Medicine, 2011 promises the completion of the current Medical Services Call Center upgrade, the expansion of our outreach to divers seeking information and our continuing efforts to increase DAN s presence in the mainstream medical community.

DAN EDUCATION DAN remains dedicated to its mission of sharing information with divers, teaching them what they need to know to stay safe and to assist in the event of emergency, thereby increasing the safety of others. ADDING PARTNERS When DAN launched its multicenter approach in 2009, its primary focus was on increasing the resources available to DAN Research and Medicine. But it was never intended to stop there, as DAN proved with the signing of a new partnership with the Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) in late The collaboration increases the depth of resources offered in both the DAN and WMS continuing education programs, and the richness of those combined resources debuted at the jointly-sponsored 69th DAN Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine Course in Little Cayman in April CONTINUING THE EDUCATION DAN is also working hard at home. One of the highlights for DAN Education in 2010 was the launch of its first DMT continuing education program. Fulfilling a unique role among divers, DMTs serve as the critical first step in the dive medicine chain, caring for injured divers on the scene and acting as tenders in the hyperbaric chamber. The new continuing education course offers CEU credit for current DMTs who need to renew their certification. It recertifies all DMT-As and upgrades all DMT-Basics to the newly standardized DMT rating, which took effect in January The new program helps ensure the new DMTs DAN brings into the field remain there, enhancing the assistance resources available to divers. DAN promotes dive safety through education. DIVE MEDICINE FOR DIVERS: PART 3 The year closed for DAN Education with the completion of its Dive Medicine for Divers (DMFD) course. Created for divers who want to know more than basic first aid techniques, Dive Medicine for Divers provides a better understanding of how our bodies react to the pressures and stresses of diving. DMFD3 informs divers about what happens in a diving emergency and how diving affects their bodies, providing a framework to educate interested divers in a series of topics not normally addressed in basic dive training, including gas toxicities, causes of drowning and issues of providing care such as Good Samaritan Laws. THE 2011 PROMISE DAN Education s promise for 2011 began with the 2010 changes to the ILCOR/American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiac Care. With the need to update training materials, DAN Education is undertaking a complete redesign of its education offerings, including the streamlining of courses and the inclusion of new guidelines for first aid and cardiac care. As the pioneers of diving first aid and emergency management education, the timing of the course redesigns is perfect, as 2011 also marks the 20th anniversary of DAN s flagship program, Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries DAN Progress Report 5

DAN RESEARCH With all we know about diving, dive medicine and the interactions between them, much remains to be learned. DAN Research remains at the forefront of the search for answers. FATALITIES WORKSHOP 2010 In April 2010, DAN hosted the DAN Diving Fatalities Workshop. The two-and-a-half-day program featured workshops led by a panel of international authorities on dive medicine, training and accident prevention and investigation. The entire weekend was standing-room only, attended by divers, dive professionals and members of the medical community who work to prevent diving fatalities and participate in fatality investigations. The sharing of knowledge gained and the discussions that took place began later in 2010 with the release of presentations from the workshop. DAN promotes dive safety through research. GATHERING THE INFORMATION DAN Research spent a great deal of time interacting with DAN Members and expanding its gathering of critical research data. In addition to the distribution and compilation of information generated by the 2010 Member Health Survey, DAN Research began data capture in the technical and freediving communities using methods that included medical calls, field work, lab studies and additional member surveys. CONTINUING THE STUDIES 2010 also marked the continuation of critical research studies, including DAN s collaborative work on patent foramen ovale (PFO) and the correlation between Sudafed and oxygen seizures. Both studies are part of DAN Research s new approach and desire to provide answers within a five-year period (or less) to fulfill divers needs for answers as new areas of diving are explored. THE 2011 PROMISE DAN Research plans to continue to share what it learns, beginning with the release of the 2010 Diving Fatality Workshop Proceedings and the hosting of a new group of DAN Research Interns. DAN Research will also be generating more data in 2011 with the execution of additional Member Health Surveys. Finally, DAN Research is joining the efforts of DAN Medicine and Education on the Harvesting Divers Project by looking at the treatment of severe decompression sickness (DCS) DAN Progress Report

CLOSING YOUR TURN DAN has never considered its relationship with divers to be a one-way conversation. Much of what we do is in response to diver needs, requests and experiences. It s the collaboration between DAN and divers that keeps us strong, vital, efficient and evolving. We want the conversation to continue. Please let us know your thoughts on the progress DAN made in 2010 as well as what you want to see in 2011 and beyond. You can reach us anytime by visiting and selecting Contact DAN on the navigation bar. It s been a great year at DAN, and we look forward to hearing your thoughts on it as well as fulfilling all of the promise the coming years hold.
