Identification of hazards Type of danger: Irritant to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract, possibly carcinogenic. Special information for humans and environment: Toxic vapours. At high concentrations it can cause narcosis. Methylene Chloride is metabolized to carbon monoxide in the body, which contributes too much of its toxicity. 4. First aid measures General information: In case of doubt, or when symptoms persist, seek medical attention Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Inhalation: Remove the patient to fresh air, administer 100% humidified, supplemental oxygen and support breathing. Skin contact: Remove contaminated clothing. Rinse with flooding amounts of water for 15 minutes. Wash with soap and water. Do NOT use solvents or thinners. C406 1

2 Eye contact: Contact lenses should be removed. Irrigate copiously with clean, fresh water for at least 15 minutes holding the eyelids apart, seek med. advice. Ingestion: If accidentally swallowed obtain immediate medical attention or consult a poison control centre. Unless the poison control centre advises otherwise, have the conscious and alert person drink 1 2 glasses of water, then induce vomiting with Ipecac syrup. Lethal blood level = 280mg/L 5. Fire fighting measures Extinguishing media: Carbon Dioxide, dry chemical powder, foam, sand or earth Particular danger provocated by the product or its smoke after case of fire: Fire will produce phosgene, carbon monoxide and hydrogen chloride. These products are a hazard to health. Particular pers. protection: Appropriate self-contained breathing apparatus may be required. Cool closed containers exposed to fire with water-spray. 6. Accidental release measures Personal measures of attention: Avoid skin contact, clean-up personnel to use suitable protective equipment. Protection of the environment: The product is a liquid. It contains dangerous components. Collect spillage s for disposal according to the waste regulations. Procedure of cleaning and removing: Contain and collect the product in mechanical way. Do not dispose in sewers. Contain spillage with sand. Clean preferably with a detergent, avoid the use of solvents. Disposal see Section Handling and storage Handling Do not use near ignition sources. Use suitable personal protective equipment. Do not use plastic or rubber hoses for unloading trucks or tank cars unless the materials have been approved for use with Methylene chloride. Demands for spaces of storage and vessels: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, away from heat or ignition sources. Do not store near foodstuffs. Inf. of storage together with other products: Store separately from strongly oxidizing agents and strongly alkaline and acidic materials. More information of conditions of storage: Store only in containers of origin. (or containers which are similar) Observe the label precautions. Store in a dry, well-ventilated place not above 35 C, protect against heat. C406 2

3 8. Limits of exposure and personal measures of protection Technical safety measures: Provide adequate ventilation. This may be achieved by local or general exhaust ventilation. If these are not sufficient to maintain solvent-vapor-conc. below the exposure limits, suitable respiratory protective equipment has to be worn. Hand protection: Wear chemically protective gloves, - advice should be sought from glove suppliers. Barrier creams may help to protect exposed areas of the skin. (They are not substitutes for physical protection, don't apply them after exposure) Eye protection: Eye protection to protect against liquid splashes should be worn. Skin protection: Suitable working overall, aprons and boots to prevent repeated or prolonged skin contact. 9. Stability and reactivity Conditions: Stable under recommended storage and handling conditions. (see Sect. 7) Conditions and substances to avoid: Avoid high temperatures (above 35 C). Don't bring in contact with oxidizing agents or strongly alkaline, acidic or oxidizing materials. Dangerous substances of decomposition: In fire hazardous decomposition products such as hydrogen chloride, carbon monoxide and phosgene may be produced. C406 3

4 11. Toxicological information Inhalation of the vapours of the preparation may cause hazards to the health. (Irritation of mucous membrane, the respiratory system, dermatitis, adverse effects on the central nervous system, damage to the kidneys and liver and cardiovascular disorders.) 12. Ecological information The product is a liquid and classified dangerous. Methylene chloride degrades by reaction with photochemically produced hydroxyl radicals but does not undergo direct photolysis. In water it is removed primarily by evaporation. 13. Disposal considerations Product: Do not allow entering drains/water courses or ground water. Disposal: Pour on sand and allow to evaporate. Investigate biodegradation as methylene chloride is reported to completely biodegrade under aerobic conditions with activated sludge in 6 hours to 7 days. Waste, including containers are controlled wastes and should be disposed in accordance to the Control of Pollution Act/Environment protecting Act. Un-cleaned packing: Dispose in the recycling 14.
