BS: A British Standard for Temporary Water supplies. The information below is a summary of the information which accompanies the Standard and to which instances the standard has relevance. Storage vessels/ transfer vessels should be clean, disinfected and sampled prior to delivery. Any vessel being used for the storage of wholesome water should comply with the water fittings regulations ie. WRAS approved and made from materials approved in regulation 31 of the drinking water regulations. Any company suppling a tank should always provide their customer with a certificate of disinfection and sample certificate before being installed on site. IBC tanks are not fit for purpose as they are not made from approved materials and let light in. a lot of people argue that it is not being used for drinking water but any water being used for drinking, washing or cooking has to be wholesome. Pipework/fittings should be clean and disinfected and comply with water fittings regulations. It is important when multiple contractors are working on an installation that documentation is kept from all contractors so there is a full audit trail of disinfection records of pipe/ cabins/ sinks etc. Water quality monitoring- any water being stored over 48hrs needs to be monitored, and can be stored for a maximum of 7 days and only then if the quality of the water is maintained. Before each replenishment technicians should test the water for Chlorine residuals, ph, Conductivity and temp. these results should be audited on a week on week basis and any declines in water quality identified as early as possible. If the chlorine residuals continue to drop on a weekly basis the tank should drained and replaced. Staff training- any staff working on a temporary water supply should hold EUSR water hygiene cards and be trained in potable water transfer. Also good idea to keep records of this on site. Anyone filling up a temporary vessel/ tank should provide a disinfection and sampling log from their Bowser/ tanker and should record the source of the water and chlorine residuals.
BS 8551:2011 Provision and management of temporary water supplies and distribution networks (not including provisions for statutory emergencies) - Code of practice is a new standard that provides a framework for best practice in the management of temporary wholesome water supplies and maintenance of the distribution networks and container vessels. It demonstrates all the procedural steps that should be carried out when supplying water as well as the due diligence required in relation to water, health and safety laws. BS 8551 serves as a code of good practice for a range of events and temporary supply situations, including festivals, the deployment of temporary water supplies in circumstances where mains water is unavailable, and construction sites where temporary water supplies are commonplace. BS 8551 is suitable for: Festival and event organisers Venue operators/installation engineers Construction sites Holiday caravan/camp sites Local government agencies Portable water suppliers Mobile/outside caterers BS 8551 gives recommendations and guidance on how to: Gauge wholesome supply Connect to permanent distribution pipe work for extraction purposes, avoiding contamination risks Supply, maintain and clean vessels used in transportation or as supply points Disinfect vessels Store and ensure quality of bottled water stocks intended for temporary supply
Discussion Learning IBC s are to be wrapped in Visqueen to stop sunlight. Dosing the IBC with a Chlorine Dioxide tablet at every fill Arranged for sampling All IBC are to be locked / secured

Reg 15 Contractor s duties Plan, manage and monitor construction work under their control so that it is carried out without risks to health and safety; _- EWCE look to design out the risk in their role as PD and also if they are acting solely as PC by communicating at an early stage with designers and client
Reg 15, continued For projects involving more than one contractor, coordinate their activities with others in the project team in particular, comply with directions given to them by the principal designer or principal contractor. EWCE have completed a number of collaborative planning meetings on projects where multiple contractors are involved, see below
