1 EXPEDITION ADVENTURE PART 2: HIGHER RESOLUTION RANGE SEISMIC IMAGING TO LOCATE A SUNKEN PIRATE SHIP OFF ILE ST MARIE. Jakob B.U. Haldorsen, and Douglas E. During his expedition to Ile St Marie, Madagascar in January/February 2000 the explorer Barry Clifford discovered the remains of a sunken conjectured to be Captain Kidd s Adventure Galley. The story of this expedition and subsequent investigations of the site is presented in some detail at the Web site Piles of rocks on the seafloor suggested the presence of a shipwreck. The mounds contained ballast rocks left behind after the ship s wooden structures decayed and disappeared. The expedition had initially been denied an application to probe the site, and they were looking for a non-invasive investigation technique they could use to verify the present or past existence of a ship in the silt under the rock piles. Silt is generally low on oxygen and is known to have preserved sunken vessels in other locations. Although there was no equipment commercially available that could do what he wanted, we told Mr. Clifford that we believed we could build a system that could produce a 3-dimensional sonic image of the shallow sub-seabottom at the site. For high-resolution imaging through saltwater-saturated sediments, there are no practical alternatives to acoustic waves for the illumination of the object. However time was a great concern to us. We had two months to design, build, and test a completely new system. In addition to the hardware we also had to build computer programs to transform the acoustic reflection measurements to images in 3-d. The available time was not by any means enough for launching a proper engineering project. A further challenge was that we would have to take this system to a very remote island off the coast of Madagascar, where no spare parts available. In a compromise between the goals of simplicity and offthe-shelf robustness, we assembled a system consisting of a commercially available subbottom profiler, a purpose-built lightweight conveyance system, and a pair of hydrophones connected to a DAT audio recorder. Off the Coast of Ile St Marie, Madagascar, June 2000 The Adventure Galley sank in the harbor of Ile St Marie in 1698 after being abandoned by the crew. During the months of January and February 2000 the Clifford expedition found and mapped out piles of ballast rock on the seafloor in the harbor, indicating the locations of several sunken vessels. They also made an underwater photographic survey of the area around the ballast pile deemed likeliest to be the Adventure Galley. The photomosaic showed the visible extent of the ballast pile, as well as some coral structures whose growth had captured the shape of planks from the hull of a vessel. A key step in confirming the identity would be to sample and classify a piece of wood preserved in the mud, if such could be found. 1

Considering the size of the area to be investigated, and the size of the detailed structure of the sunken ship, we decided to use a resolution of about 2 inches in the design of the system. This meant using a source capable of transmitting significant energy at 20 khz. We chose a light and small-sized commercial source using a fixed khz chirp. The source was equipped with a fixed directional hydrophone that would record the reflected acoustic field. With this high-frequency source we felt we could make a reflection tomogram of the sub bottom structure. We would cover the most interesting part of the area sketched out in Figure 1 with an acquisition grid of about 2-by-4 inches. This would allow us to apply what in seismic exploration is known as migration processing to the data. Migration essentially transforms the data from a function of reflection times to a function of depth. However, for this technique to work, one has to know with some degree of accuracy the location of the source and receivers at the precise time of each record. In addition to positional accuracy, the image quality is also affected by the distribution of acquisition points on a spatially continuous acquisition surface. An even distribution gives the best results. To meet these requirements to spatial accuracy, Cliff Evans of Schlumberger designed for us a device - essentially a frame like a xy plotter - that would allow the expedition divers to pull the source with the attached receiver over the acquisition grid. To reduce the physical effort of the divers, the plotter was equipped with an electric motor. In the interest of having a device that was small and light enough to be fit into a single-engine airplane, the frame was made out of flexible lines that would be kept rigid using additional lines stretched two from each of the four corners. After flying the equipment in, a large tent was set up at the wreck site and packed with computer equipment. The processing units were connected to the in-water equipment by a thick cable (Figure 2). 2

We had originally planned to process the data, and while still at the site, to produce a three-dimensional picture of the buried vessel. As the sonar source (or fish, Figure 3) was cranked back and forth, operated by Todd Murphy and his team of experienced divers, it became clear that we needed to modify the acquisition system. As it turned out, it was virtually impossible to keep the frame of the xy-plotter tight and rigid. The loose frame made it difficult to precisely control or predict the motion of the fish. In addition to this, the gearbox transmitting power from the electric motor failed, leaving the divers to use a hand-crank for pulling the fish through the water. We had hoped to be able to trigger the source using an attachment to the gearbox. With the gearbox gone, we had to trigger the source based on elapsed time rather than on position. Using the hand crank to move the fish through the water it was difficult to keep it at a fixed speed, resulting in a variable and essentially unknown shot-point interval. After experiencing problems with the link between the commercial acquisition system and the underwater conveyance system, we ultimately relied on the simplest system that was available. We had two extra hydrophones that were intended for experiments with alternative ways for positioning of the sonar fish and as a backup to the acquisition components of the primary system. These response of these hydrophones were continuously digitized using a portable DAT recorder connected to our laptop computers. In our setup, one of the hydrophones was attached to the source and the other one was kept fixed at the end of conveyance line. Figure 4 shows an example of the data collected with this setup. From the ray paths indicated in the figure we could obtain sufficient measurements to sufficiently determine the geometry while using the signal recorded by receiver 1 for imaging purposes. Back in the US we computed the travel times for the ray paths indicated on Figure 4. Using these travel times, and the speed of sound in water, we could solve for all the relevant positions, such as position along a given pass, the depth of the source in the water for each recording position, the water depth at a given location, etc. The positional information allowed for migration processing of the data. Figure 5 shows the result of migrating one pass or line of data where some sub-bottom structures may be identified. We collated all migrated passes into a 3-d cube. While they are subtle, there are 3

4 undeniably a collection of features in the image that align over distances that are much larger that the aperture of any operators that were applied to the data. When identified and contoured in 3D, they outline a shape that is consistent with what would be expected for structural timbers and debris from a ship s hull buried in the mud. A sub-seafloor cut through the 3-d image cube is shown in Figure 6, where we have indicated the locations of possible structural remains of a sunken ship. Figure 7 shows two frames from a 3D animation of the buried structure that was produced for the Discovery Channel documentary The Quest for Captain Kidd.
