Safety in the Science Lab 7.4B use preventative safety equipment, including chemical splash goggles, aprons, and gloves, and be prepared to use emergency safety equipment, including an eye/face wash, a fire blanket, and a fire extinguisher

Taking Notes How to: Remember that you use FIB notes and important things are in RED

Safety First Science is a hands-on laboratory class. You will be doing many laboratory activities, which require the use of hazardous chemicals and expensive lab equipment. Safety in the science classroom is the #1 priority. To ensure a safe science classroom, a list of rules has been developed and provided to you in your student safety contract. These rules must be followed at all times. A signed lab safety contract is required to participate in labs.

Lab Safety What do you think is the most dangerous thing in any laboratory?

Lab Safety The most dangerous thing in any laboratory is someone who doesn t know what they are doing.

Lab Safety Rules Dress Code 1. Wear safety goggles when directed. 2. Wear a lab coat or apron when directed. 3. Tie back loose hair whenever chemicals, sharp instruments or open flames are being used. 4. Do not wear loose, baggy clothing, long sleeves or loose jewelry when working in any lab activity.

Lab Safety Rules General Safety Listen and follow directions Be Responsible at All Times. No horseplay, practical jokes, pranks, etc. Wear your goggles Measure Carefully Don t eat or drink in the lab Handle animals with care and respect Be careful with hot or electrical appliances Tell your teacher if anything breaks or spills Clean your desk before and after experiments Wash your hands

Lab Safety Rules First Aid Report all accidents, no matter how minor, immediately to the teacher. Know what to do in the case of specific accidents such as acid spills, fires, or chemicals on skin or in eyes. Know the location of the first aid kit, Nurse s and Office phone number and how to respond in case of an emergency.

Lab Safety Rules Fire and Heat Never heat anything that you are not instructed to heat. Use protective gloves. Never reach across a flame or other heat source. And do not touch hot plates even when they are unplugged! Point test tubes or bottles that are being heated away from you and others. Chemicals can boil or splash out of the tube.

Lab Safety Rules Chemicals and Glass Only mix chemicals as directed by teacher. Never touch, taste, smell etc any chemical unless instructed to do so. Hot glassware does not look hot! Never use broken or chipped glassware. Tell teacher if you break glass it must be disposed of in the glass box.

Safety Symbols Common to all Sciences Usually only in Chemistry Apron Goggles Glassware Heat-resistant gloves Electrical Shock No Open Flames Physical Safety Proper Disposal Hand Washing General Safety Toxic/poison Open Flames Corrosive Heating Glassware Fumes Usually only in Biology Sharp Objects Plant Safety Animal Safety

Clean up Rules When done do the following: Clean up. Put away correctly. Turn off/unplug. Wash hands. To Summarize 1. Use common sense. 2. Follow the teacher s directions. 3. If you don t know, ask. 4. Do the right thing.

Safety Items in a Lab Safety Gloves - To protect hands from harmful chemicals and burns Apron prevents liquids from reaching skin or clothing

Safety Goggles Protects the eyes from spills, splashes, and flying objects. You will wear these when necessary

Fire Prevention Fire blanket: Prevents oxygen from reaching the flame. With out oxygen, combustion cannot occur. Fire extinguisher - Puts out fires!

Running water To wash hazardous materials from the hands, clean equipment, remove spilled chemicals from the body, and put out fires.

Eyewash Station To flush the eye or face with water to remove or dilute chemicals or other irritants.

Chemical Shower The safety shower should also be used if you suffer a massive spill of a dangerous chemical on yourself, and need to get it off rapidly.
