1 Advanced Provide First Aid (2 days Face-to-Face & Online learning) Course Descriptor: The Advanced First Aid training course includes a cluster of three (3) Units of Competence (UOC) which include: HLTAID001 - Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation HLTAID003 - Provide First Aid HLTAID006 - Provide Advanced First Aid Suitable For: This course is suitable for first aiders who may be required to provide, coordinate and manage a first aid response across a range of complex situations, including community and workplace settings. Course Descriptor: The course describes the skills, knowledge and techniques required to: Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in accordance with (IAW) the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines. Provide, coordinate and manage life-threatening emergencies. Provide a first aid response to a casualty in a range of situations, including a mass casualty triage. The course includes: Resuscitation including using a soft bag resuscitator (using a bag valve mask resuscitator) Clinical assessment in detail Basic anatomy of all body systems Triage via a mass casualty exercise The course applies to all workers who may be required to provide CPR, perform a first aid response in an emergency situation, including community and workplace settings. Course Duration: theory assessment. Delivery Mode: 2 days in-class with some pre-reading and completion of an online Face-to-Face with a pre-entry online theory component. Location: The course is conducted in Perth and other locations in Western Australia. Pre-requisites: Nil, however we strongly recommend that participants have some sort of basic understanding of first aid prior to enrolling (previously completed a Provide First Aid HLTAID003 Unit of Competency) Entry Requirements: 1. Learners will be required to provide their Learner Identifier number prior to the commencement of the course ( to register). 2. Learners will require sufficient language and literacy skills to write a report of an incident. 3. Learners must have the necessary health and fitness to carry out the assessment requirements which are to complete continuous 2 minutes of CPR on an adult manikin kneeling on the floor and 2 minutes of continuous CPR on a infant manikin. Assessments will also include participants to lift, stand, kneel, twist and bend over periods of time. (Some learners may find the physical aspects of this training strenuous and are asked to discuss any injuries or physical limitations, with the RTO staff prior to enrolment). 4. Learners MUST complete pre-reading and an online theory assessment prior to attending

2 the 2-day face-to-face program. 5. Learners are required to wear comfortable and loose-fitting attire including; enclosed flat shoes, slacks and loose-fitting shirt/t-shirt for both males and females. We advise against wearing good clothes as clothing may be stained / damaged due to fake blood or dirt. On Enrolment: Once an enrolment and payment has be confirmed the learner will receive a tax invoice and an account activation to log into My Royal and the elearning course where a username and password will be required (follow the supplied prompts on the website to do this). The course that the learner has enrolled into will show course not started, the learner will then select Go to Courses, where the learner will be taken to the elearning site, log in using the My Royal login details, and complete the course. The learner is then able to progress through the 15 modules in their own time. (Approximate 4-8 hrs to complete). The learner will move through and complete each online training module, on completion, a certificate of completion (COC), will be available for download. Learners can only progress to the in-classroom practical phase of the course by providing a hard copy of the COC, or a digital image of the certificate, to the course trainer on arrival at the classroom phase of the course. This is mandatory requirement and learners will not be allowed to progress to the practical phase unless trainers have sighted evidence of completion (whether hard copy or electronic verification). The classroom based phase will be delivered over 2 days, through class based practical and assessment tasks. Learners will complete practical based assessments to establish competency. If competency cannot be achieved through these methods the trainer will use alternative methods to ensure the learner has every opportunity to meet competence. 3 o infection control principles and procedures, including use of standard precautions o requirements for currency of skill and knowledge legal, workplace and community considerations including: o awareness of potential need for stress-management techniques and available support following an emergency situation o capabilities of emergency management services o consent o duty of care requirements o importance of debriefing o own skills and limitations o legal requirements of administration of medication and the rights and responsibilities of the First Aider in the workplace regarding medication o privacy and confidentiality requirements o respectful behaviour towards a casualty considerations when providing first aid including: o airway obstruction due to body position o appropriate duration and cessation of CPR o appropriate use of an AED o assessment and interpretation of vital signs, including respirations, temperature and pulse o chain of survival o how to conduct a visual and verbal secondary survey assessment of casualty o priorities of management in first aid when dealing with life-threatening conditions o procedures for dealing with casualties who are aged or infirmed o procedures for dealing with major and minor accidents in the workplace o procedures when providing first aid to children o standard precautions principles and procedures for first aid management of the following scenarios, including complications: o abdominal injuries o allergic reaction o anaphylaxis

4 o basic care of a wound o bleeding control o burns, including thermal, chemical, friction and electrical o cardiac conditions, including chest pain o choking and airway obstruction o crush injuries o diabetes o drowning o emergency childbirth o envenomation o environmental impact including hypothermia, hyperthermia, dehydration and heat stroke o eye and ear injuries o febrile convulsions o head, neck and spinal injuries o levels of consciousness o needle stick injuries o poisoning and toxic substances o respiratory distress, including asthma o seizures, including epilepsy o shock o skin injuries o soft tissue musculoskeletal, including injuries including sprains, strains, dislocations and fractures o stroke o substance misuse, including common drugs and alcohol, including illicit drugs basic anatomy and physiology relating to: o how to recognise a person is not breathing normally o chest, skeleton, joints and muscles o response/level of consciousness o upper airway and effect of positional change o considerations in provision of first aid for specified conditions Practical demonstration of: followed DRSABCD in line with ARC guidelines, including:

5 o performed at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor o performed at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles both compressions and ventilations) on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface o performed at least 2 minutes of Bag-valve-mask ventilation and at least 2 minutes of compression during a two-rescuer procedure on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor o responded appropriately in the event of regurgitation or vomiting o managed the unconscious breathing casualty o followed the prompts of a Automated External Defibrillator (AED) o followed single rescue procedure, including the demonstration of a rotation of operators with minimal interruptions to compressions responded to at least three simulated first aid scenarios contextualised to the candidate s workplace/community setting, including: o demonstrated safe manual handling techniques o conducted a visual and verbal secondary survey assessment of the casualty o assessed vital signs (respirations, pulse and temperature) o communicated effectively with a first aid team providing direction and coordination of other first aiders o post-incident debrief and evaluation o provided an accurate verbal and written report of the incident applied first aid procedures for the following: o allergic reaction o anaphylaxis o bleeding control o choking and airway obstruction o conducted a basic triage for multiple casualty incident o envenomation (using pressure immobilisation) o fractures, sprains and strains (using arm slings, roller bandages or other appropriate immobilisation principles) o head, neck and spinal injuries (using immobilisation principles) o respiratory distress - including asthma

6 o o o seizures - including epilepsy shock located and interpreted workplace policies and procedures Support services: A reasonable level of spoken and written English is required to complete this course.
