4 Personal Responsibility If you don t know something, ask for help. Don t ever operate a piece of equipment that you haven t been trained on! Stop & ask for help! If you see something dangerous or substandard, you are responsible to stop it. 4

5 Total Safety Culture Safety is not something you put on like a piece of clothing. Safety is a value you believe in and practice as a habit. Safety means you care about yourself, your team and those who use our products. You translate your care into action. Every employee is responsible and accountable for his/her own safety and that of others. 5

6 Three Dangers of Propane Flammability Suffocation in Closed Places Frostbite Propane is not poisonous but it can be dangerous. 6

7 Flammability Propane is a fuel and it will burn quickly and at a very high temperature. No smoking. No matches. No lighters. No pagers. No cell phones. 7

8 NO SMOKING! Except in designated areas 8

9 Ignition Control No cell phones or pagers. No matches or lighters. No spark producing tools during filling times. (Electric or battery power.) 9

10 Suffocation Propane will accumulate in a closed-in area or in low areas. It will push away the the air and you could die. Do not get into closed-in areas where propane is present. 10

11 Frostbite Propane liquid and vapor are very, very cold. Do not allow propane to touch your skin Fahrenheit! 11

12 Hazard Communications Some chemicals are safety hazards and have the potential to cause fires, explosions, serious accidents, or health risks The Employee Right-to-Know law was established to inform employees of chemical hazards 12

13 Hazard Communication Program Employee Right To Know 29 CFR Policy Blue Rhino has developed a Hazard Communication (HAZCOM) Program to ensure that all employees are informed of the hazardous chemicals known to be present at our company. We will make every effort to provide our employees with a safe workplace through hazard control, training, and safe work practices. 13

How to recognize labels and other forms of warning 3. The location of MSDS Manual 4. The employee s responsibilities 5. What PPE is required for each chemical 14

15 YOU HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY AS AN EMPLOYEE TO 1. Be sure you understand how to read labels and MSDS. 2. Know what precautions to take in handling chemicals. 3. Know what to do if the unexpected occurs. 4. Make sure all chemical containers have labels. 15

16 YOU HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY AS AN EMPLOYEE TO 5. Report missing or illegible labels to your supervisor. 6. If you don t understand what a label means, ASK your supervisor before proceeding. 7. Follow warnings and instructions. 16

19 Material Data Safety Sheet MSDS An MSDS is the responsibility of the supplier in the case of propane our supplier gives us and MSDS and we provide one to the retailer. 19

27 Hazardous Material Labels Hazardous Materials carry labels when in storage, in transit or in a container. If you are unsure about the label or the material ask you supervisor! 2.1 Red Edge Minim um 10.8 Inches 27

28 Propane is Heavier than Air This leak shows: Liquid shooting out and vaporizing quickly. Vapor falling: to the ground. Propane vapor accumulating on low ground. 28

30 Cylinders Must be Kept Upright Our cylinders are designed to dispense vapor fuel not liquid fuel. For this reason you must keep the cylinder upright so that vapor, not liquid, comes out the valve (the vapor space is in contact with the valve). 30

31 Collars Collars protect the valve. They must be intact. If cylinders had no collar the valve would be unprotected. It could break off and become a rocket. 31

32 Foot Rings Foot rings keep cylinders upright. These must be intact. 32

33 Valve Openings The service or appliance connection The relief valve pops and emits a small bit of gas at 375 pounds per square inch psi. This would be a rare occurrence. 33

34 OPD valves The Overfill Prevention Device (OPD) is a great safety advancement. Helps keep the cylinder from being overfilled. An OPD has a three sided hand wheel. 34

35 How Does an OPD work? The OPD has a float inside, much like a toilet tank. It will shut off before the cylinder exceeds 80% full. This OPD float is preparing to go into the shut-off position. 35

36 Blue Green Brass Valves that are blue-green may be dangerous. They must be pulled out and checked by trained personnel. 36

37 Special Jobs Special Training These jobs can only be done by people with special training: Filling Evacuating Painting Re-qualifying Cylinders Driving a Fork Truck You may be trained on these jobs later. 37

38 Powered Lift Trucks If you do not have a license issued by the manager of this facility you may not operate a powered lift truck ( forklift ). 38

39 Personal Protective Equipment Approved steel toed boots must be worn at all times. 39

40 Personal Protective Equipment Other PPE may be required at other work stations. If your supervisor tells you to wear the PPE, you MUST wear it. 40

41 How to recognize a leaking cylinder: Notice the frost forming below the weld seam this indicates that there is a serious leak on this cylinder. There are several ways to detect a leak 41
