2 Overview and General Cncepts The Opus Refrigeratin Library has been created t facilitate the develpment and maintenance f a Nvar cmmercial refrigeratin cntrl system. This guide will step yu thrugh the cnfiguratin prcess and explain each cntrl setting chice that is ffered. It is written fr a user with refrigeratin cntrl systems experience. Therefre, basic refrigeratin cncepts are nt reviewed, and cmmnly accepted refrigeratin cmpnent terminlgy is used. It als assumes prir experience with Opus/Niagara. Opus certificatin is advised fr anyne that is initially cnfiguring a system. A brief glssary f refrigeratin terms is prvided. Figure 1. 3 Interactive Screens Autmatic Creatin f Data Lgs and Alarms Viewing Data Lgs Navigating within Screens As selectins are made, screens will autmatically display relevant parameters and hide unused parameters. Fr example, if a circuit is set fr Dual Temp cntrl, additinal dual temperature cntrl parameters are displayed. Otherwise, these chices are hidden. This cncept hlds true fr many ther selectins. Therefre, sme f the screens displayed in this Guide may nt exactly match what yu see as yu develp a system. As input and utput pints are defined, typical histry and alarm pints are created autmatically, but they must be enabled befre they will functin. Glbal verview screens that list all alarms r histry pints prvide a cnvenient methd fr enabling all desired alarms and histries. Further refinement f the alarm and lg parameters may be needed in certain applicatins. After a system is cnfigured and is up and running, the simplest way t view data lgs fr a pint is t psitin the muse ver the pint s value then click the muse. Fr example, psitin the muse ver the display f suctin r discharge pressure and press the right muse buttn. This will advance yu t its data lg. Setpints that are within pp-up windws may be navigated mre quickly by using the Tab buttn instead f the muse. This is especially useful when yu are defining the temperature and defrst parameters f a circuit. USER GUIDE 4/8/ Fr the latest technical dcumentatin, visit

5 Preparatins Figure 2. Refrigeratin Cntrl Opus Prperty Sheet The Refrigeratin Cntrl Opus Prperty Sheet cntains prperties that can be used t custmize the Refrigeratin Cntrl screens. This prperty sheet wuld usually nly be used when initially setting up the refrigeratin cntrl system. The mst cmmnly used fields fr system setup: Hide Cndensing Unit Tab The default value is true. Set t false if yur system cntains cndensing units. Hide Misc Equipment Tab The default value is false. Set t true if yur system des nt cntain miscellaneus utput pints that need t be cntrlled. Enable Offnrmal Alarm Offsets - The default value is true. Set t false t turn ff the feature f using alarm ffset. Allw Defrsts Per Day Sched Edit - The default value is true. Set t false t disable the ability t manually edit the defrst schedule times. Table 2. Preparatin Prcedure Step Prcedure 1 Gather up all the prper infrmatin Rack Legends and Circuit and Case Cntrl Parameters. 2 Create an Opus statin either frm a template r by creating a new statin. This will nt be cvered in further detail in this dcument. 3 Create the cmmunicatin drivers fr the system: Spectrum, Nvarnet, BACnet, etc 4 Define the hardware cmpnents under each driver, define the cntrllers that will be used. Fr example, Spectrum cntrllers like the Cmpressr Output Mdule (COM), Cndenser Cntrl Mdule (CCM), Rack Input Mdules (RIM), etc. shuld be defined. This can be dne by dragging and drpping them frm a palette, r thrugh the replicatin f an existing cntrller. See Appendix 1 fr mre inf. USER GUIDE 4/8/ Fr the latest technical dcumentatin, visit

6 Step Prcedure 5 Mst I/O pint names can remain at their defaults at this time. The nly exceptin may be fr the input sensrs f a Rack Input Mdule. Yu may want t define thse when yu create the RIM. Other I/O pint names can be re-defined later as they are assigned t cntrl strategies. 6 Open the palette called Opus Refrigeratin Library. 7 Drag and Drp frm the library nt Cnfig f the statin. 8 Un-hiding the Cndensing Units tab: If yu are ging t cntrl stand-alne cndensing units (as ppsed t refrigeratin racks) then n the Nav Tree right-click n Refrigeratin Cntrl and view the Opus prperties. The first prperty is Hide Cndensing Unit Tab. Set this prperty t False t make it viewable. 9 Hiding the Misc. Equipment tab: If yur system des nt cntain miscellaneus utput pints that need t be cntrlled, then n the Nav Tree right-click n Refrigeratin Cntrl and view the Opus prperties. The secnd prperty is Hide Misc Equipment Tab. Set this prperty t True t hide it. 10 On the navigatin tree Duble-click n. This will reveal the pening screen f the Opus Refrigeratin User Interface. Frm this pint frward, users shuld be able t cnfigure the cntrl system with the Opus user interface screens. In ther wrds, the navigatin tree shuld nt be needed t further define the refrigeratin cntrl system. It will nly be needed fr ther services. USER GUIDE 4/8/ Fr the latest technical dcumentatin, visit

7 Opening Screen fr Refrigeratin Cntrl Figure 3. Refrigeratin Cntrl Tabs The Opening Screen cntains 5 default tabs: Racks, Misc Equipment, Miscellaneus I/O Pints, Histries and Alarms. As yu click n each f these tabs, the screens displayed underneath will change t display infrmatin in the selected categry. Fr example, if yu create a rack and click n the Racks tab anther set f screens will be revealed that pertain t a Rack such as circuits, cmpressrs, cndensers, rack I/O pints and Rack Track. Cnfiguring a Rack Rack I/O Pints T create a Rack, right-click n the buttn next t Refrigeratin Cntrl (circled abve in Figure 3) and select Add Rack. Give it a name like MT r LT (shrt names are suggested). Mre than ne rack can be created per XCM, limited nly by the memry and micrprcessr capacity f the XCM. All memry is dynamically allcated as needed, i.e., there is nt a fixed amunt f memry allcated t cntrl, histry pints, alarms, etc. Therefre it is difficult t define the maximum capacity f an XCM. Hwever, fr safety and reliability f refrigeratin equipment it is recmmended that there be nly ne XCM per rack. This is nly a general recmmendatin because sme racks are very large and cntrl a great number f circuits, while thers are very small with limited capacity. Once yu have created a rack, a new screen appears that cntains 4 tabs. The last tab, called I/O Setup is fr a few cntrl pints f glbal significance fr the entire rack. It appears as: Figure 4. Steps fr Cnfiguring Inputs Circuit Cntrl Step Prcedure 1 Phase Lss Click n the flder t define the path t the main phase lss sensr fr the rack. 2 Outside Air Temp define the path t the utside air temperature sensr. This is typically n the Cndenser Cntrl Mdule (CCM). 3 Heat Reclaim Input if heat reclaim is used, define a digital (Blean) input that indicates when heat reclaim is active. When this pint is clsed (indicating heat reclaim is active) the minimum cndenser pressure setpint may be elevated t accmmdate the heat reclaim. A digital input is used s that this functin will wrk whether the reclaim is cntrlled by Opus r a thermstat that is external t Opus. 4 Ht Gas Output if there is a Master Ht Gas Valve n the Rack, define it here. 5 Ht Gas Valve Delay define a time delay fr the Master Ht Gas Valve. The first Racks tab is called Circuit Grups : Figure 5. Add Circuit Grups Nte the highlighted tl bx buttn abve. Clicking n this buttn reveals a menu that allws yu t begin creating circuits. A tl bx buttn like this exists n many screens, and is used t create and cnfigure numerus refrigeratin cmpnents. Click n this buttn and select Add Circuit Grup. Give it a simple name such as MT Circuits. This will expand the right side f the screen, where yu can add individual circuits t the grup. The upper right crner f the circuit verview screen has a tl bx buttn that is used t manage the circuit verview screen. This is shwn belw: USER GUIDE 4/8/ Fr the latest technical dcumentatin, visit

Defrst Cntrl Settings Explanatin f Optinal Autmatic Defrst Scheduling Opus can perfrm defrst scheduling in 2 ways, either thrugh manual scheduling (called Fixed Schedule ) r thrugh autmatic scheduling (called Defrsts per Day ). Defrsts Per Day: In this methd, users define the number f desired defrst cycles per day, the start time fr the first defrst, and the maximum defrst time. It will create the desired defrst cycles, staggering them thrughut the day and crdinating them with ther defrst cycles. Yu can manually change the defrst times, but if yu adjust the number f defrsts per day r the duratin, yur manual changes may get verwritten. NOTE! T disable the ability t manually edit the defrst schedule times, g t the Opus Prperties f the Refrigeratin Cntrl cmpnent. Fixed Schedule: This methd is used t manually enter all f the defrst times fr a circuit. See Defrst Sched Type fr mre infrmatin. The Circuit Overview Screen has 2 glbal defrst parameters and 1 buttn at the tp f the screen: USER GUIDE 4/8/ Fr the latest technical dcumentatin, visit

22 Figure 18. Glbal Circuit Parameters Maximum Number f Cncurrent Defrsts: Each circuit has a defrst parameter called Observe Cncurrency, which gives the circuit the ability t participate in defrst cncurrency with ther circuits. The parameter set here defines the number f defrsts that can be active at any ne time fr the circuits that bserve cncurrency (the circuit s Observe Cncurrency parameter has been set t Yes ). Once the maximum limit is reached the system will delay additinal defrst requests, fr the cncurrent circuits, until ne (1) r mre f the active defrsts terminate. If a user frces a circuit int Emergency Defrst, then it will ignre the cncurrency limit and g int defrst immediately. An Emergency Defrst will als ignre the temperature terminatin setpint, and defrst fr the maximum time duratin. CMS Display Delay After Defrst: When a circuit is using the Nvar CMS mdule, during a defrst it s temperature reading will be suppressed and the display will shw DEF. This parameter defines hw lng after a defrst cycle it will cntinue t suppress the temperature display. This delay will apply t all CMS mdules cnfigured in the CMS Mdule Pints sectin f the Defrst Ntificatin tab f each circuit within the circuit grup. Defrst Schedules buttn: This will advance yu t a glbal verview f all defrst schedules. The varius clrs used n this verview are adjustable by clicking n them at the bttm f the screen. Duble-click n any f the defrst schedules n this screen t prceed t its detailed schedule times. The additinal defrst parameters fr each circuit are as fllws: Sync Defrst T - If this circuit is t defrst at the same time as anther circuit, use this field t define which circuit t fllw. In ther wrds, if tw (2) r mre circuits share a defrst cntactr, then yu can synchrnize their defrst cycles by selecting ne as the master and ne r mre as the slave defrsts. If this defrst is a slave, then its parameters are readnly and can nly be adjusted via the master defrst t which it is synchrnized. 23 Max Defrst Time This specifies the maximum time a defrst cycle can run if an early terminatin (n temperature) is nt accmplished. This als specifies the time an emergency defrst cycle will run. If this is a dual temp circuit, a secnd max time is ffered fr when the circuit is perating in the MT mde. Min Defrst Time This specifies that the defrst cycle will nt be allwed t terminate until this minimum amunt f time has expired. Terminatin Setpt This is used fr the temperature terminatin f the defrst cycle. Define the terminatin setpint. If it is a Dual Temp circuit, a secnd terminatin setpint is ffered fr terminating the circuit when it is set in the Medium Temp psitin. Def Term Type This defines which sensrs are t be used t terminate the defrst cycle. If there is mre than ne (1) sensr, then chse whether t terminate n the minimum (all abve terminatin setpint), maximum (any abve terminatin setpint), r average temperature. Defrst Sched Type This allws the user t chse either Fixed Schedule (user defined defrst schedule) r Defrsts Per Day (autmatic scheduling). If Fixed Schedule is selected, then a nneditable field appears t display Events per Day. If Defrsts Per Day is selected, then a field appears fr the user t define hw many defrsts per day are t be perfrmed (tw fields are displayed if Dual Temp Switch is enabled). A Start Time field will als appear t enter the start time f the first defrst f the day. It will autmatically spread the remaining defrsts evenly thrughut the day. Evap Fan During Def If yu are cntrlling an evapratr fan n this circuit, define the state that yu want the fan t be in during the defrst cycle. If yu are nt cntrlling the fan, this setting is irrelevant. EEPR during Defrst (Standard, Secndary Lp r rcc.1081 DX System EEPR Circuit nly) If the user is cntrlling an EEPR with this circuit, define whether t keep it pen r clsed during a defrst cycle. Defrst Override This is the same functin as the verride that is ffered n the circuit verview screen. Yu can chse t Frce a Defrst, Terminate a Defrst, r perfrm an Emergency Defrst. An Emergency Defrst will ignre the maximum number f cncurrent defrsts and g int defrst immediately. It will als ignre the temperature terminatin setpint and remain in defrst fr the full time duratin specified by the Max Defrst Time. Drain Delay Time - When the defrst heater turns ff, define a time delay befre the liquid line slenid can turn n. This parameter is nly available when the Defrst Type is set t Electric r Ht Gas. This delay begins when the LLSV turns n (when the drain time has expired). This parameter is nly available when the Defrst Type is set t Electric r Ht Gas. Observe Cncurrency As mentined earlier, this sets whether this circuit will bserve the maximum number f cncurrent defrsts. If left at N it will g int defrst regardless f hw many ther defrsts are currently active. Case Settings These parameters are nly present if a Case Cntrller has been added t the circuit. This is dne in the Case Cntrllers tab. Defrst Interval This sets the time interval fr the defrst cycle in the event that the cntrller ges int cmmunicatin lss and cannt receive its defrst cmmand frm the circuit. Evap Fan Delay Temp This defines the temperature that the case must drp belw fr the evapratr fan t turn n after a defrst cycle. This prvides a drip time t prevent water drplets frm blwing nt fd prducts at the end f a defrst cycle. Defrst n Term Sensr When set t Yes allws the case cntrller t terminate its defrst cycle based n its lcal defrst terminatin temperature sensr reading. When set t N the case cntrller will fllw the circuit s defrst cycle fr terminatin. I/O Setup buttn This allws yu t set up input and utput pints that can be used fr defrsting. These pints include Defrst Terminatin Sensr(s), Defrst Digital Terminatin Input(s), Evapratr Fan Output(s) and Defrst utput(s). 35 Cmpressr Cntrl Thery and Descriptin f Algrithms Cmpressr Staging Fixed and variable speed cmpressrs and unladers can be cmbined in different ways t achieve different lad capacities, r stages. The stages can be defined either manually r autmatically. In Opus, the staging algrithm maintains the suctin pressure r temperature at the setpint by adjusting its stages. Staging f the cmpressrs is driven by an underlying PID lp that ranges frm 0 t 100%, which crrespnds with the ttal capacity f the rack. The utput f the PID is cmbined with autmatic cycle cntrl features t match the rack capacity t the rack lad. Other details f cmpressr staging: Cmpressrs f equal capacity will autmatically equalize their run times. The stepping f stages is nt linear. If the suctin pressure is changing rapidly it may skip stages. Fr example, it may skip frm stage 2 t stage 5 if necessary t match a rapidly changing lad. If a variable speed cmpressr is part f the suctin grup, it will be mdulated autmatically by the main rack PID lp. Stage 0 (zer) is when all cmpressrs (including variable speed) are Off. If there is 1 variable speed cmpressr, it will be n with every stage greater than zer. The variable speed cmpressr is used t trim the rack capacity t match the refrigeratin lad. Opus cmpressr cntrl is fully cmpatible with Cpeland Scrll Digital and Cpland Discus Digital cmpressrs. Cld Start - Recvery after a rack shut-dwn due t phase lss, pwer failure, etc., is a special case where the ramp up time is limited (called the Ramp n Restart Time ). This is t prevent all cmpressrs frm turning n at the same time. It s pssible t define a rack with mre than 1 variable speed cmpressr. In this situatin it will use the largest capacity VS cmpressr first t trim the rack pressure befre attempting t use the next largest VS cmpressr. Prf Delay When a cmpressr is cmmanded n, if there is an amperage sensr r digital status pint n the cmpressr, it will use the input t verify that the cmpressr has turned n after the prf delay timer has expired. After the prf delay, if it des nt sense cmpressr amperage (r a cntact clsure), the cmpressr status will change t Fault and the cmpressr will be turned ff. Fault Lckut Time If a cmpressr ges int fault and is turned ff, it will autmatically re-try t start this cmpressr after the fault lckut time has expired and the staging lgic requires it. When it USER GUIDE 4/8/ Fr the latest technical dcumentatin, visit

38 attempts t re-start, the Fault message will disappear, and the Prf Delay will begin again. Discharge Lckut (L/O) Setpint define the discharge pressure setpint that will cause all cmpressrs t turn ff fr a specified perid f time. This is a high limit safety. Discharge L/O Timer define the time perid that all cmpressrs will shut dwn fr when the discharge lckut setpint has been exceeded. Suctin Flat Cnfiguratin The secnd tab is fr cnfiguratin f Suctin Flat. This is a functin that raises the suctin pressure setpint in a cntrlled way, as lng as the target circuits maintain their temperature setpints. It is an energy saving feature because the cmpressrs use less energy when the suctin setpint is higher. Suctin Flat can als result in fewer cmpressr cycles, because it helps t match the rack capacity t the refrigeratin lad. Users can select the target circuits/cases and the parameters that enable and disable suctin flat. Figure 24. Suctin Flat Tab Use Suctin Flat? Set t Yes r N. If yu set it t yes, yu must use the tl bx buttn in the lwer sectin (Circuit Delta Pints) upper right crner f the bx t select which circuits will participate in flat. Cndenser Cntrl Thery and Descriptin f Algrithms Air Cled Cndensers: Fr air cled cndensers, Opus ffers many ptins n cntrl methds. The recmmended methd f cntrl is t use an ptimizatin rutine, r setpint flat. The ptimizatin rutine cntrls the head pressure based n maintaining a differential (Delta) between the saturated cndenser temperature (SCT) and ambient temperature. This saves cndenser fan and cmpressr energy by keeping the head pressure as lw as pssible withut driving n fans unnecessarily. Cndenser setpint flat allws users t specify an acceptable pressure range fr the cndenser t perate within under varius cnditins. T help cnfigure the cndenser prperly, as yu select certain ptins nly relevant setpints will be displayed and irrelevant setpints will be hidden. There is flexibility n when fixed speed fans start and stp vs. the cntrl f a variable speed fan. When there is a VFD, users can select whether t have all fans n befre ramping their speed up, r t bring n a fewer number f fans and let them ramp up t 100% befre bringing n additinal fans. This is achieved by where yu set the Cntrl Setpint fr the VFD versus the stage up and stage dwn setpints that cntrl when fans turn n and ff. Fan staging (turning n and ff) can be set up with separate stage up and stage dwn setpints, r with a single setpint with a deadband. If yu chse setpint plus deadband, the VFD cntrl setpint will be used, with a deadband, t determine when t stage the fans up r dwn. Water Cled Cndensers There are tw different evaprative cntrl mdes fr the fan PID lp and fan staging lgic: based n either wet-bulb temperature r water sump temperature. The wet-bulb mde cntrls the discharge pressure (r drp leg pressure) f the evaprative cndenser t a flating setpint based n the sum f a wet-bulb temperature and the cndenser design delta temperature value cnverted t a pressure. Operatin f the evaprative cndenser in the wet-bulb cntrl mde is similar t the aircled perating mde except that split valve cntrl is nt prvided. The evaprative cndenser cnfigured fr water sump temperature cntrl mde takes the temperature f the water sump and feeds that directly int the fan PID lp and fan staging lgic. The setpint fr the variable speed fan is a fixed temperature. The fan stager will cntrl t the same setpint and a deadband value as in the air-cled cndenser. As the water sump temperature increases the fan speed and staging increase t match the cndenser s capacity t the system lad by maintaining the water sump temperature at the setpint. Flat lgic is nt prvided in this mde. Sensr fault lgic watches the water sump temperature input r inputs and can trigger a cndenser bypass mde similar t that f the air-cled cndenser. There is ne setpint that is unique fr water cled cndensers. It is the Fast Recvery Setpint. Fr it, specify the discharge pressure setpint that will immediately drive the fans t full peratin. This is an emergency verride t prevent a high pressure lck-ut cnditin. USER GUIDE 4/8/ Fr the latest technical dcumentatin, visit

52 Water Pump Cntrl The water pump cntrl lgic is respnsible fr peridically cycling tw water pump utputs t maintain a run time balance between them. Each water pump utput selectr maintains a run time accumulatr that prvides the run time in hurs and tenths f hurs. The water pump cntrl watches the run time accumulatr f the currently running pump and when it sees that the accumulated run time has exceeded the switchver time setting the cntrl will turn ff that pump utput and turn n the ther. It then watches the ther water pump utput s run time and makes a switch when that run time exceeds the setting and the cycle repeats. The pump that was turned ff will have its run time accumulatr cleared t 0.0 hurs. The cndenser samples the water pump run time nce a minute and is independent f the system clck. If nly ne water pump has been cnfigured the cntrl will attempt t keep it n cntinuusly. Als, n water pump switch ver will ccur if the switchver time setting is set t 0.0 hurs. A phase lss will shut dwn the water pump utputs. As the phase lss is remved the pump utput with the lwest run time will be turned n. A pump lckut prperty disables the run time balancer and turns ff all f the water pumps similar t the phase lss respnse. This prperty is used when cnditins such as utdr air temperature indicate that the pumps shuld be stpped due t freezing r that there is n water left in the sump t pump. A pump verride prperty disables the run time balancer and turns n all water pumps. This prperty is used if a pump failure has been detected such as n flw. The pump lckut prperty has pririty ver the pump verride. The lckut and verride prperties wuld be externally managed by universal cntrls r ther wire sheet lgic. Water pump cntrl lgic is nt executed while the cndenser perating mde is set t air-cled type. USER GUIDE 4/8/ Fr the latest technical dcumentatin, visit
