3 A respirator protects workers from breathing in dangerous substances when they work in a hazardous environment PPT-SM-RP

7 You must wear a respirator when you work in a hazardous atmosphere Atmospheres are considered hazardous if they are immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH) or contain contaminants over the permissible exposure limit (PEL) or threshold limit value-time-weighted average (TLV-TWA) PPT-SM-RP

9 You may need to wear a respirator when Working in a confined space There is a potential for exposure to asbestos or hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) Sandblasting Welding PPT-SM-RP

10 Your company must assess your workplace for respiratory hazards and provide you with appropriate respiratory protection when needed Your company must provide you with a respirator appropriate for the hazard PPT-SM-RP

11 There are several types of respirators Some common respirators include Particulate respirators (N-95 or dust mask respirators) Air-purifying respirators (APRs) Powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs) Hoseline/airline respirators Self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBAs) PPT-SM-RP

12 Particulate respirators only protect you against particulates like dust Only used for low-level hazards Usually disposable PPT-SM-RP

13 APRs filter out contaminants using a cartridge Only effective if used with the right cartridge or filter based on what hazards are present Cartridges are color-coded based on the contaminants they protect users from PPT-SM-RP

14 PAPRs use a fan to draw air through the cartridge to the user Easier to breathe through, but they must be fully charged to work properly Use the same cartridges as APRs PPT-SM-RP

15 You can check that you are using the correct APR or PAPR cartridge based on what the hazards are by using this color-coded chart PPT-SM-RP

16 Hoseline/airline respirators give the user breathing air from an independent source using a cascade system of cylinders or a compressor Protect against a higher concentration of contaminants The hoseline running from this respirator to the air source limits a user s ability to move PPT-SM-RP

17 SCBAs use their own air tank to supply clean air to the user Protect against a higher concentration of contaminants Very heavy and require special training to use and maintain PPT-SM-RP

18 If your company requires you to wear a respirator, you must be clean-shaven because facial hair can interfere with the respirator seal Facial hair is the most common cause of respirator seal leakage PPT-SM-RP
