1 Overview This unit identifies the competences you need to carry out tests on quartz watches and watch movements, in accordance with approved procedures. You will be required to carry out tests on a range of gentlemen's and ladies' quartz watches and watch movements, to establish that they are functioning to specification. You will be required to carry out tests which will include water resistance and accuracy. Your responsibilities will require you to comply with organisational policy and good practice for carrying out the testing activities. You will report any problems that you cannot personally resolve, or that are outside your permitted authority, to the relevant people. You will be expected to work to instructions, either alone or in conjunction with others, taking personal responsibility for your own actions and for the quality and accuracy of the work that you carry out. Your underpinning knowledge will be sufficient to provide a sound basis for your work, and will enable you to adopt an informed approach to applying appropriate testing procedures to quartz watches and watch movements. You will have an understanding of the quartz watch movement in adequate depth to provide a sound basis for carrying out the activities and for ensuring that the watch functions correctly to the required specification. You will also be expected to report where the outcome of the tests identifies the need for further investigation or servicing work. You will understand the safety precautions required when carrying out the testing activities. You will be required to demonstrate safe working practices throughout, and will understand your responsibility for taking the necessary safeguards to protect yourself and others in the workplace. SEMCW2-10 1
2 Performance criteria You must be able to: P1 work safely at all times, complying with health and safety and other relevant regulations and guidelines P2 follow the appropriate procedures for use of tools and equipment to carry out the required tests P3 set up and carry out the tests using the correct procedures and within agreed timescales P4 record the results of the tests in the appropriate format P5 review the results and carry out further tests if necessary SEMCW2-10 2
3 Knowledge and understanding You need to know and understand: K1 the safe working practices and procedures and the specific safety precautions to be taken when testing quartz watches and watch movements (to include wearing protective clothing and equipment; handling techniques; safe working practices, procedures and guidelines) K2 the importance of keeping the work area clean, tidy and free from waste and surplus materials K3 the hazards associated with testing quartz watches and watch movements, and with the equipment that is used, and how these hazards can be minimised K4 the protective equipment that you need to use for both personal protection and protection of the watch/watch movement being tested K5 how to obtain and interpret job instructions, drawings and other documents needed in the testing process K6 terminology used with quartz watches and watch movements K7 the basic principles of operation of the quartz watch/watch movement being tested, and the functions of the components within the movement K8 good practice/approved procedures to be followed during the testing of the watch/watch movement K9 the various testing methods and procedures to be used K10 the type of equipment to be used to carry out the various tests, and its care and calibration requirements K11 how to set up and apply the appropriate test equipment K12 the types of corrective measure that can be carried out to bring the watch/watch movement within specification requirements K13 the tools and equipment to be used during the testing activities K14 how to check that tools and equipment are free from damage or defects, are in a safe and usable condition, and are configured correctly for their intended purpose K15 how to check the test results, and determine whether the watch/watch movement meets the required operating conditions K16 the problems that can occur with the testing and adjustment of quartz watches/watch movements, and how these can be overcome K17 the documentation to be completed at the conclusion of the testing activities K18 the extent of your own authority and to whom you should report if you have problems that you cannot resolve SEMCW2-10 3
