2 1. Scope This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) applies to the staff and students using the ACCU-CHEK Safe-T-Pro Plus in the Pharmacy Practice Resource Unit (PPRU) at the Pharmacy Department, University of Malta. 2. Objective To describe the procedure for the operation of the ACCU-CHEK Safe-T-Pro Plus. 3. Definitions 3.1. ACCU-CHEK Safe-T-Pro Plus: A sterile single-use lancing device used for the collection of capillary blood from the finger tip in adult patients or from the heel in children under 1 year of age. It has the option of 3 different penetration depth settings (1.3mm, 1.8mm and 2.3mm) which are marked by notches of different lengths on its T- shaped body. This lancing device also has a safety mechanism in which the needle automatically retracts after the puncture process to avoid needle-stick injuries and cross-contamination. 4. Responsibility 4.1. The members of the Department of Pharmacy (staff and students) are responsible for following this SOP The designated Laboratory Officer or Laboratory Assistant is responsible for ensuring that this SOP is followed. Page 2 of 7

3 5. Procedure 5.1. Diagram of ACCU-CHEK Safe-T-Pro Plus 5.2. Page 3 of 7

4 Turn the depth adjuster to the desired penetration depth Ensure that a click is heard when choosing the desired penetration depth Hold the lancing device between the index finger, middle finger and thumb Press the lancing device firmly against the chosen puncture site Completely depress the trigger button with the thumb Dispose of the lancing device in the sharps container Gently massage the finger towards the finger tip or exert slight pressure on the heel to encourage a drop of blood to form Apply the drop of blood directly to the desired test strip Wipe the puncture site with a small piece of dry clean gauze Gently press the gauze onto the puncture site if it continues to bleed Cover the puncture site with a plaster to protect it and prevent infection.
