1 FM Series Low and Medium Velocity Gas, Oil and Combination Burners February 2012 FM Series Features Low or medium velocity burner versions Suitable for liquid or gaseous fuels Simple conversion from gas to oil or oil to gas no lance removal required. Low air and gas pressures Standard air preheat temperatures to 350 C Option of air preheat temperatures to 600 C Excellent flame stability These large capacity burners utilise a series of different stabilisers in common bodies to provide a wide variety of application capabilities. The burner performance may be optimised over a range of conditions by selecting the appropriate baffle / flame stabiliser for the required duty. For example, combustion air pressures as low as 10 mbar can be accommodated without compromising mixing characteristics. These properties are important, for example, where low CV gases are to be burnt. The burners are available in three design styles: The RFM burner comprises of a refractory air baffle of a simple design that is useful for applications where simplicity and ruggedness are important. The RFM can accept high furnace temperatures, with air preheat temperatures up to 350 C (standard) and is for gas firing only. The burner capacity is based on the air flow resulting from the air temperature and pressure drop across the baffle. A choice of baffle bodies in each body is available see capacity chart for details. The AFM burner has been developed for use with gas and light oil and offers an alternative to the RFM series, where combustion air pressures are low, for applications where burner turndown and air/gas mixing are important. Each burner air baffle is individually designed to suit the application. The AFM uses a refractory lined alloy baffle and is for gas or light oil firing. The baffle can resist high furnace temperatures and accept air preheat temperatures up to 350 C (standard). The burner capacity is based on the air flow resulting from the air temperature and pressure drop across the baffle. A choice of baffle bodies in each body is available see capacity chart for details. The RFM and AFM burners are available with two gas lance options: the A type gas lance is a simple tubular construction whilst the B type gas lance uses a moveable gas disc which is used to give on site adjustment of flame characteristics. The AFM series oil atomiser uses medium pressure compressed air and is easily inserted and withdrawn along the centre of the B type gas lance for cleaning and maintenance. The SFM burner incorporates a swirl type flame stabiliser that has been developed primarily for use with gas or liquid fuels. Gaseous fuel is supplied through the centre lance to a number of fuel nozzles, arranged concentrically around the lance. The burner is designed for high or low pressure gas, light oil or dual fuel firing. Maximum furnace temperatures of up to 1,200 C are acceptable with preheat temperatures up to 350 C refer to FivesNA for applications with higher temperatures. Between the fuel lance and gas nozzles is a spinner assembly to rotate the combustion air. Also, the air inlet of the burner incorporates a spinner vane to impart a rotation to the incoming air to influence the flame swirl and length. Air Preheat Temperatures All standard burners are designed for preheated combustion air with temperatures up to 350 C. Special burners suitable for air preheats up to 600 C are available contact FivesNA. At air preheat temperatures up to 250 C; the burner body may need to be externally insulated. Over 250 C, the burner body is provided with internal insulation, resulting in typical body surface temperatures of up to 70 C. It should be noted that the air inlet will be restricted and it may be necessary to use a burner one size larger please refer to FivesNA. In all cases where air is preheated, it is the duty of the purchaser to ensure that the air ducting and burner body are suitably guarded for personnel protection. 2 Specifications and Capacities Page 2 RFM Series Low and Medium Velocity Gas Burner with Refractory Baffle 1. Capacities The table below gives the air volume in Nm³/h at predefined pressures and temperatures. It identifies the physical size of the burner baffle related to this air flow, temperature and pressure drop. There are several options per body size with the maximum air pressure drop at 25 mbar. For sizing a baffle, take the required air flow in Nm³/h, the air temperature and the pressure drop and use this data to select the nearest baffle and body size. For other air temperatures, the pressure drop and volume can be re-calculated using the table shown. 2. Burner Turndown A turndown of up to 10:1 can be expected when using Natural gas please refer to FivesNA for other fuels. 3. Gas Pressure The burner gas pressure required depends on the gas lance used, the type of gas and gas volume please refer to the Gas Pressure Table on page Discharge Velocities The burner discharge velocity results from the total volume of burner exit gases at a given temperature and the burner tile discharge opening. The FM series burners, with the exception of the FM 0, do not employ conventional tiles and these have to be formed in the furnace wall refractories. Since the tile design will depend on the exhaust velocity required, differing outlet velocities can be chosen. However, discharge velocities higher than 80 m/s are not recommended because of the increased noise levels. Burner tiles can be supplied by FivesNA on special request. 5. Flame length Burner flame lengths are affected by many operational parameters such as burner duty, air temperature and baffle size etc. The values shown on the table below are given as a guide only. 3 Specifications and Capacities Page 3 AFM Series Low and Medium Velocity Gas, Light Oil and Combination Burners with Alloy Baffle 1. Capacities The capacity of the AFM series burner is restricted by the burner air inlet and the air temperature. The table below gives the maximum air volumes through the burner per body type. Three standard size baffles are available per body type. The above figures may be used to obtain the maximum thermal capacity and represents a 10% excess air level. 2. For capacities on oil greater than 12MW, refer to FivesNA as a special fuel lance is required. 3. This table is based on an air inlet velocity of 20m/s for cold air and 30m/s for hot air. When using preheated combustion air, the baffle has to be calculated for the maximum capacity and given air pressure drop. The pressure drops for preheated air are indications only
4 Specifications and Capacities Page 4 SFM Series Low and Medium Velocity Gas, Light Oil and Combination Burners with Spinner Baffle 1. Capacities The capacity of the SFM series burner is restricted by the burner air inlet and the air temperature. The table below gives the maximum air volumes through the burner. The air pressure drop differs between 10mbar when the spinner flap is on 90 (low spin) and 20mbar with full spin setting.
