2 Donning Personal Protective Equipment AFC & PSC Basic SCBA The ability to don personal protective clothing NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications 5.1.2, 5.3.1, 5.3.2, 5.3.3, 2013 Edition. Skill Sheet-1 The candidate, given a complete set of PPE, will don full personal protective equipment, according to manufacturer s recommendations. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 1 minute Criteria/Performance Steps: 1. Dons boots, pants, protective hood, coat, helmet, and gloves 2. Properly dons all personal protective equipment (no exposed skin except for facial area, helmet strap is tightened, coat collar is up, and all fasteners are secured) 3. Completes within 1 minute 4. 3 Donning Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus The ability to don self-contained breathing apparatus NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications 5.3.1, 5.3.2, 5.3.3, 2013 Edition. Basic SCBA Skill Sheet- 2 The candidate, wearing personal protective equipment, shall properly don a self-contained breathing apparatus, and activate the PASS alarm. The candidate may use ONE of the following: Over-the-head method, Coat method, or Seat Mount method. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 3 minutes Criteria/Performance Steps: 1. Dons SCBA using one of the listed methods and ensures unit is secured and adjusted properly 2. Dons face piece, attaches regulator (if using waist mount regulator, attaches breathing tube to regulator) inhales activating regulator, holds breath for 5 seconds to ensure there are no leaks CRITICAL POINT 3. Exhales forcefully to ensure exhalation valve is working properly-critical POINT 4. Dons hood, helmet, and gloves and ensures there is no exposed skin CRITICAL POINT 5. 4 Inspecting SCBA SCBA is cleaned and maintained NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, 5.3.1*, 5.5.1, 2013 Edition. Basic SCBA Skill Sheet- 3 The candidate, given a self-contained breathing apparatus, shall demonstrate how to inspect and maintain this unit according to manufacturer s recommendations to ensure the SCBA is ready to use Expected time to complete skill(s) is 3 minutes Criteria/Performance Steps: 1. Checks that cylinder is at least 90% full 2. Checks that all gauges work. Cylinder & regulator gauge should read within 10% of each other 3. Checks to see that low pressure alarm is in working condition CRITICAL POINT 4. Checks to ensure that all hose connections are tight & free of leaks 5. Checks to ensure that the face piece is in good condition & the straps are in the fully extended position 6. Checks to ensure that the harness system is in good condition & that all straps are in the fully extended position 7. Checks to ensure that all valves (e.g. bypass, mainline, exhalation) are operational. Bypass valve should be fully closed. CRITICAL POINT 8. 5 SCBA Emergency Procedures The ability to control breathing and initiate emergency procedures in the event of an SCBA failure. NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, 5.2.4*, 5.3.1*, 2013 Edition. Basic SCBA Skill Sheet- 4 The candidate, wearing full personal protective equipment and SCBA shall demonstrate controlled breathing techniques and be able to demonstrate the ability to perform an emergency procedure check on his/her selfcontained breathing apparatus. Warning: No emergency breathing procedure is endorsed by manufacturers, NFPA, ANSI, or any other regulating agency. These procedures should be used only as a last resort in life threatening situations. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 3 minutes Criteria/Performance Steps: CONSERVATION OF AIR (CONTROLLED BREATHING) 1. Calls a Mayday - CRITICAL POINT 2. Inhales normally through mouth and exhales normally through nose. 3. Inhales and exhales slowly. 4. Proceeds to exit as quickly as possible. 5. Repeats steps for three minutes - CRITICAL POINT EMERGENCY PROCEDURE CHECK 1. Calls a Mayday - CRITICAL POINT 2. Manually activates PASS device 3. Does NOT remove face piece - CRITICAL POINT 4. Places hand to face piece and regulator and checks bypass valve. 5. Uses bypass or cylinder valve to control air flow (depending on free flow or no flow). 6. Corrects problem if possible. 7. Proceeds to exit as quickly as possible. 8. 6 Restricted Openings AFC & PSC Basic SCBA The ability to use SCBA to exit through restricted passages NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, 5.3.1, 5.3.9, 2013 Edition. Skill Sheet-5 The candidate, wearing full protective equipment including SCBA of his/her choice, shall safely exit an area with a restricted opening using ONE of the listed techniques (vertical or horizontal opening that is too small to accommodate both the firefighter and the SCBA). Expected time to complete skill(s) is 20 minutes Criteria: RESTRICTED OPENINGS - SHIFTING THE SCBA 1. Maintains contact with SCBA CRITICAL POINT 2. Maintains physical, visual, or verbal contact with partner CRITICAL POINT 3. Keeps all PPE intact CRITICAL POINT 4. Checks conditions on other side of passage before entry CRITICAL POINT 5. Loosens shoulder strap and then waist strap 6. Shifts SCBA to one side (depending on which side regulator is on) 7. After obstruction is cleared, repositions SCBA and tightens straps RESTRICTED OPENINGS- BACKWARDS SWIM TECHNIQUE 1. Maintains contact with SCBA CRITICAL POINT 2. Maintains physical, visual, or verbal contact with partner CRITICAL POINT 3. Keeps all PPE intact CRITICAL POINT 4. Checks conditions on other side of passage before entry CRITICAL POINT 5. Sits with back against wall and centered between two obstacles 6. Feet positioned in front of body as far as possible and buttocks raised off ground to proceed through opening 7. Pulls shoulders and elbows into center of body while pushing backwards through the space 8. Once SCBA is clear, the firefighter rotates the body, dipping the shoulder to bring the rest of the body through the obstacle Score: /7 Score: /8 Page 1 of 3 Revised- 08/13/13

Expected time to complete skill(s) is 20 minutes Criteria: RESTRICTED OPENINGS - FORWARD DIVE TECHNIQUE P F 1. Maintains contact with SCBA CRITICAL POINT 2. Maintains physical, visual, or verbal contact with partner CRITICAL POINT 3. Keeps all PPE intact CRITICAL POINT 4. Checks conditions on other side of passage before entry CRITICAL POINT 5. Centers body between two wall studs and places both arms in front through obstacle, attempting to get elbows past opening 6. Exhales and arms are pulled inward to center of body, allowing firefighter to fall through opening 7. Clears obstacle and uses arms to pull rest of body through opening RESTRICTED OPENINGS - FULL ESCAPE PROCEDURE 1. Maintains contact with SCBA CRITICAL POINT 2. Maintains physical, visual, or verbal contact with partner CRITICAL POINT 3. Keeps all PPE intact CRITICAL POINT 4. Checks conditions on other side of passage before entry CRITICAL POINT 5. While lying to one side, loosens the shoulder straps and removes waist strap 6. Rolls out of the backpack to the side of the regulator and does not lose contact with strap CRITICAL POINT 7. SCBA is rotated with cylinder valve facing away from firefighter and straps are neat and organized to facilitate easy redonning 8. Moves forward keeping SCBA in front and close to body CRITICAL POINT 9. When clear of obstacle, redonns the SCBA by laying out straps and rolling into backpack assembly Score: /7 Score: /9 Page 2 of 3 Revised- 8/13/13

9 Changing an Air Cylinder The ability to replace SCBA air cylinders NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, 5.3.1, 2013 Edition, AFC & PSC Basic SCBA Skill Sheet-6 The candidate, wearing full personal protective equipment, shall demonstrate the proper procedure for changing a SCBA air cylinder using the one person method. The candidate may use any SCBA unit available to his/her department. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 2 minutes Criteria/Performance Steps: Retest P F 1. Doffs unit using proper procedures 2. Closes cylinder valve on the used bottle and bleeds off pressure - CRITICAL POINT 3. Disconnects the high-pressure coupling from the cylinder and puts the hose coupling on the ground directly in line with the cylinder outlet (ensures grit & liquids cannot enter the end of the unprotected high-pressure hose prior to attaching it to the cylinder outlet valve) 4. Releases the cylinder clamp & removes the empty cylinder and places a new cylinder into the backpack 5. Checks cylinder valve opening & the high-pressure hose fitting for debris and checks condition of O-ring CRITICAL POINT 6. Connects high-pressure hose to cylinder valve opening and opens cylinder valve 7.
