1 Directions This training guide is to be used by a Subject matter expert (SME) authorized Evaluator/Trainer and Trainee during on-thejob training (OJT) or prior to an evaluation as a resource. (S) Indicates a demonstration or skill task (K) indicates a knowledge task. OJT Reminder: OJT is an active hands-on process. Practice should be as similar to the actual job task as possible. However, if the training is being provided on actual job site while a covered task is actually being simulated, the Evaluator either needs to be qualified on that covered task or be assisted by someone that is qualified on the covered task. The Evaluator should closely monitor the Trainee's practices to ensure safe and correct task performance. At no time should a non-qualified individual perform, or train for, a covered task unless directed and observed by a qualified individual. However, if the span of control for that particular covered task is NA (requiring only qualified individuals to perform the covered task), the training must be simulated. Training is simulated by "walking through" the task and simulating all actual manipulations (valves, switches, tools, etc.) an individual would use during the performance of a covered task. Simulating includes the use of safety and administrative requirements as if the task was being performed live. Refer to the Veriforce Evaluator Training Program for more on how to conduct formal OJT. Recommended Student Training or Resources DOT 49 CFR (b) DOT 49 CFR Purge Pipeline Facilities with Air or Inert Gas K: Identify the steps required to prepare for purging with air or inert gas. 1. Develop and review safety issues involved with purging and handling of compressed gases. Review these issues with all personnel to be involved with the purging process. Review the requirements for personal safety equipment. Ensure adequate supply of air or inert gas 2. Develop and review a written purging plan, the plan should include what equipment will be needed, the number of personnel needed and where they will be stationed during the purging process. The purge plan should also include notification of public safety agencies, especially if the purge is to take place in a populated area. 3. Develop a plan to isolate the section once the purging is competed. Additional plans may be necessary to return the line to service or remain isolated in a lock and tagged condition. 4. Determine what method of purging will be used, calculate the required volume, pressure and time to complete the purge. Insure adequate volumes and pressure will be available to complete the purge. 5. Obtain approval from company management and gas control. 6. After approvals are received develop the time and date of the plan and notify all involved personnel. K: Identify and describe the steps necessary to complete a purge of gas with an air mover. 1. Before beginning the purging process hold a review meeting with all involved personnel to review the plan. Use schematic drawings to explain the process to 2 of 5

3 include where personnel will be located, direction of flow, pressures and times to be monitored and recorded if necessary. Also, confirm the method to monitor and sample the atmosphere in the pipeline to verify a safe atmosphere for working. 2. Monitor weather conditions to insure a safe purge. 3. Have a plan developed incase of liquids in the line are encountered. Have adequate and proper equipment available to handle these liquids if necessary. 4. Ensure that air mover is grounded in accordance with Company procedures. 5. Ensure an adequate supply of air is available for the air mover. 6. Open air inlet 7. Turn on the required supply to the air mover. 8. Sample the atmosphere in the pipeline at work location to verify a safe atmosphere. 9. Maintain the flow of air away from the workspace. K: Identify and describe the steps necessary to complete a purge with pig or slug. 1. Before beginning the purging process hold a review meeting with all involved personnel to review the plan. Use schematic drawings to explain the process to include where personnel will be located, direction of flow, pressures and times to be monitored and recorded if necessary. Also, confirm the method to monitor and sample the atmosphere in the pipeline to verify a safe atmosphere for working. 2. Monitor weather conditions to insure a safe purge. 3. Ensure an adequate supply of air or inert gas is available for the purge. 4. Have a plan developed incase of liquids in the line are encountered. Have adequate and proper equipment available to handle these liquids if necessary. 5. Disconnect and physically isolate the pipeline sections to be purged. 6. Install calibrated pressure gauge immediately downstream of the purge pressure control valve 7. Open outlet. 8. Purge by injecting slug or running a pig through the section using air or inert gas. 9. Sample at outlet for presence of air or inert gas. 10. After pig has been received or slug has been detected, continue purge as specified in the plan. 3 of 5

Response: Protect the public, property, and the environment. Follow appropriate procedures for notification, documentation, and K: Describe the proper actions to take incase of material defects, anomalies, or physical damage of pipe or a component that has impaired or is likely to impair the serviceability of a pipeline. K: Describe the proper actions to take incase of an unintended fire and/or explosion near the pipeline. Response: Leave the area immediately. Protect the public, property, and the environment. Follow appropriate procedures for notification, documentation, and K: Describe the proper actions to take incase of a failure or malfunction of pipeline component(s). Response: Protect the public, property, and the environment. Follow appropriate procedures for notification, documentation, and K: Describe the proper actions to take incase of corrosion on pipeline component that has impaired or is likely to impair the serviceability of the pipeline. K: Describe the proper actions to take incase of loss of communication. Response: Find alternate means of communication, if not possible, suspend activities and follow appropriate procedures for notification, documentation, and 4 of 5
