5 Basic information of GAS Gases Terminology Standard State:The standard state of the gas is when the temperature is 0 C and the absolute pressure is mbar (=760 Torr). Operating state:the state variables of the gas at the measuring point identify the respective operating states, e.g., 15 C, 980 mbar, humid. The add-on humid signifies that the pressure data refers to gas that is saturated with water vapor. Gas pressure:in practice, gas pressures (p) are measured as overpressure with respect to the atmosphere. Atmospheric pressure and gas pressures in the lowpressure range are given in millibars (mbar) or pascals. Density: The density (ρ) is the ratio of mass to volume of gas in kg/m3. It indicates the mass of 1 m3 of gas. In a standard state theρn density is produced. Thermal value: The thermal value is a collective term for the gross and net heating values in kwh/m3 or MJ/m3 and provides information on the heat quantity being released during the combustion. The difference between the gross and net heating values is the heat of the water vaporization. There is a difference only when gases whose burning produces water vapor are burned. 10
