1 BASIC FIRE FIGHTER ORIENTATION AND COMMUNICATIONS Orientation and Communications 1 UNIT OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this unit of study, the student should be able to: 1. Identify the organization of the fire department. 2. Explain the fire fighter's role as a member of the organization. 3. Explain the mission of the fire service and of the local fire department. 4. Explain the basic components of incident management and the fire fighter's role within the local incident management system. 5. Explain the responsibilities of the fire fighter in assuming and transferring command within the incident management system. 6. Identify accepted radio procedures for routine traffic, emergency traffic and emergency evacuation signals. 7. Describe business and personal call procedures. 8. Describe procedures and policies concerning manpower, apparatus, special calls, and move-ups during multiple alarm fires according to local procedures. 9. Demonstrate fire department radio procedures according to prescribed standards or local conditions.

3 BASIC FIRE FIGHTER FIRE FIGHTER SAFETY Fire Fighter Safety 1 UNIT OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this unit of study, the student should be able to: 1. Describe a fire fighter's responsibilities involving safety. 2. Describe dangerous building conditions created by fire. 3. Explain the functions of a personnel accountability system. 4. Identify the types of accidents and their causes that can occur in fire service related activities. 5. Demonstrate the use and care of personal protective equipment. 6. Describe the action necessary when trapped or disoriented in a fire situation or in a dangerous situation. 7. Explain the special hazards of electrical emergencies and the procedures to be used in such emergencies. 8. Describe and demonstrate the procedures for establishing work areas at various emergency scenes. 9. Identify the steps for safely working around fire apparatus. 10. Describe the safety measures to be followed when driving fire apparatus or responding in personal vehicles. 11. Describe the basic procedures for safety on the fireground.

5 BASIC FIRE FIGHTER FIRE BEHAVIOR Fire Behavior 1 UNIT OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this unit of study, the student should be able to: 1. Define fire. 2. Identify the components of the fire triangle and the fire tetrahedron. 3. Know the three physical stages of fuels. 4. Identify the different sources of heat energy. 5. Identify the classes of fire. 6. Explain how heat is transferred. 7. Explain the phases through which a fire progresses and the conditions which may develop in those phases. 8. Know what products of combustion can be found in structural fires and how these products create a life hazard.

7 BASIC FIRE FIGHTER SELF-CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus 1 UNIT OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this unit of study, the student should be able to: 1. Describe respiratory hazards and their impact on the human body. 2. Identify self-contained breathing apparatus parts and terminology. 3. Identify the physical requirements of the wearer, the limitations of the SCBA, and the safety features of all types of SCBA. 4. Demonstrate donning and doffing of SCBA while wearing full protective equipment. 5. Describe procedures for daily inspection and maintenance of SCBA. 6. Demonstrate procedures for exchanging air cylinders. 7. Demonstrate the use of SCBA in obscured visibility.

9 BASIC FIRE FIGHTER LADDERS Ladders 1 UNIT OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this unit of study, the student should be able to: 1. Identify and understand the use of the various types of fire service ladders. 2. Demonstrate how to carry, position, and raise fire service ground ladders. 3. Demonstrate how to climb the full length of fire service ladders while carrying a tool and while bringing down an injured person. 4. Demonstrate how to work from ladders with tools, with and without a safety harness. 5. Demonstrate how to use a roof ladder on a pitched roof.

11 BASIC FIRE FIGHTER HOSE, FIRE STREAMS, AND WATER SUPPLY Hose, Fire Streams, & Water Supply 1 UNIT OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this unit of study, the student should be able to: 1. Demonstrate coupling and uncoupling procedures for two lengths of hose. 2. Demonstrate three hose rolls for each size hose. 3. Demonstrate two hose carries. 4. Identify the four main causes of fire hose damage. 5. Demonstrate the use of nozzles, hose adaptors, and hose appliances carried on a pumper. 6. Demonstrate procedures for advancing a uncharged and charged attack lines operating as a member of a team. 7. Identify the three types of fire streams and the difference between a straight stream and a solid stream. 8. Demonstrate how to open and close a nozzle and identify methods of preventing damage to a nozzle and associated equipment. 9. Demonstrate proper methods of handling fire streams. 10. Identify the safe procedures in the handling of fire hose and directing fire streams. 11. Identify the characteristics of various nozzles. 12. Describe and demonstrate connecting a supply hose to a hydrant and operating the hydrant. 13. Describe and demonstrate the procedures for testing the flow from fire hydrants. 14. Identify the apparatus and equipment necessary for a water shuttle and how to set up a portable water tank and assemble equipment to transfer water between portable tanks.
