6 System Component Information I. How to use the G700N air spray gun (Fig. 3) 1. Make all initial fluid and air adjustments at the pump for maximum efficiency. CW E F CCW 2. If you make adjustments at the gun, take note of what you do. Then, if the results are not satisfactory, you can easily return the gun to its previous adjustment. Steps 3 and 4 explain the gun adjustments. G Fan pattern adjusting valve (E). Normal adjustment is the valve turned out fully clockwise and then turned IN two full turns. a. Turn counterclockwise to widen spray pattern. Fig. 3 b. Turn clockwise to narrow spray pattern. 4. Fluid adjusting valve (F). This valve is used in systems that do not have a fluid regulator. For this system, use the fluid regulator to adjust fluid flow. Turn the valve out until full trigger travel is obtained. 5. The gun has a built-in lead and lag operation. When triggered, the gun emits air before the fluid is discharged. When the trigger is released, the fluid stops before the air flow stops. This helps assure the spray is atomized and prevents fluid buildup on the air cap. Air cap horns shown horizontal which produces a vertical spray pattern Air cap horns shown vertical which produces a horizontal spray pattern Fig Loosen the air cap retaining ring (G) and rotate the horns of the air cap (14) to obtain the desired spray position. TIghten the retaining ring snugly, but do not overtighten. See Fig. 4 for how to obtain a vertical or horizontal spray pattern. 7. Clean and lubricate the gun as instructed in the separate gun manual

7 System Component Information II. How to adjust the air and fluid regulators (Fig. 5) 1. Always open air and fluid regulators slowly to prevent surging during startup. 2. The fluid regulator (6) controls fluid from the pump to the gun. For an accurate setting, adjust the fluid regulator only when the gun is triggered and fluid is flowing through the regulator. Be sure the jam nut (H) under the T handle does not interfere with your adjustments. Tighten the jam nut to lock in the setting, if desired. 5a 5b 6 H 3. To open the fluid regulator, which allows fluid to flow, turn the T-hand IN (clockwise). 4. To close the fluid regulator, which restricts or shuts off the fluid flow, turn the T-handle OUT (counterclockwise). 5. As you look at the system in Fig. 5 the air regulator (5a) on the left of the pump controls air to the pump and the regulator (5b) on the right controls the air to the gun. 6. To open the air regulator, pull out the adjusting knob. Turn the knob IN (clockwise) to open and turn the knob fully OUT (counterclockwise) to close. Push the adjusting knob in to lock the setting, if desired. Fig

8 Operation I. Pressure relief procedure The system remains pressurized until pressure is manually relieved. To reduce the risk of serious injury from pressurized fluid, accidental spray from the gun or splashing of any fluid, follow this procedure whenever you: WARNING are instructed to relieve pressure; stop spraying; check or service any system equipment; install, clean or change spray nozzles. 1. Be sure the pump air regulator (5a) is still open. Close the master air valve (A) to relieve pump air pressure. 2. Trigger the spray gun to relieve fluid pressure. II. Flush the pump before the first use Flush with a solvent compatible to your fluid. Consult the fluid manufacturer s literature for recommendations. See Flushing on page 10. III. Prime the system (Fig. 6) 1. Put the suction tube (27f) in the prepared fluid. Screw the bung plug (27d) firmly into the drum cover and tighten the thumbscrew (27e) to hold the suction tube in place, 1/2 off the bottom of the drum. 2. Close the gun air regulator (5b) and the fluid regulator (6). 3. Connect the air line (C) to the pump. 4. Open the master air valves (A). 5. Slowly raise the pump air regulator (5a) pressure to psi ( kpa, bar). The pump will cycle quickly until it is primed. When it is primed, the pump will stall against pressure. Now set the pump air pressure to 40 psi (280 kpa, 2.8 bar). 6. Hold the gun against and aimed into a grounded metal waste pail. Trigger the gun and slowly open the fluid regulator (6). The gun will emit air until the fluid arrives. When fluid flows freely, release the gun trigger. NOTE: Use the lowest air pressure needed for priming, which makes priming easier. 9 Operation IV. Set the fluid and air pressure E CW 1. With the system primed and the gun regulator closed, trigger the gun and adjust the pump air pressure regulator (5a) to 60 psi (420 kpa, 4.2 bar). CCW 2. With the air cap removed, trigger the gun into a grounded metal waste pail and set the fluid pressure regulator (6). Use the fluid pressure setting provided by your fluid supplier, if available. Otherwise use the following instructions to determine the fluid pressure. Fig. 7 To determine the fluid pressure setting, hold the gun parallel to the floor. (Be sure to catch the fluid in a container). With the gun air pressure turned OFF, trigger the gun. Adjust the fluid pressure regulator (6) until the straight fluid stream is within the range indicated for the viscosity of your fluid before it drop off. See Fig. 7. Make not of this pressure on the fluid gauge; it is your optimal fluid pressure setting. Fluid Viscosity Fluid Droop Measured with #2 Zahn cup Light (18 25 seconds) Medium (25 40 seconds) Heavy (40 60 seconds) Fluid droop: straight stream before dropping off 8 10 ( mm) 6 8 ( mm) 4 6 ( mm) 3. Release the gun trigger. Install the air cap. 4. Be sure the gun s fan pattern adjusting valve (E) has been turned OUT fully clockwise and then turned IN two full turns. See Fig Partially trigger the gun so only air is emitted. Set the gun air regulator (5b) pressure to 60 psi (420 kpa, 4.2 bar). Fig Spray a stationary test pattern on scrap paper. Hold the gun in. ( mm) from the paper and spray for 2 or 3 seconds. If the spray pattern is poorly atomized, the air and / or fluid pressures may need adjustment. If the spray pattern atomization is not fine enough, increase the gun air pressure. If the spray pattern atomization is too fine, decrease the gun air pressure. If the air atomization is still not good enough, try lowering the fluid pressure in increments of 2 or 3 psi to achieve the desired finish quality. NOTE: For the most efficient paint usage, use the lowest air pressure needed to obtain a good finish. Higher air pressures create more overspray and use more fluid. 7. Adjust the fan pattern adjusting valve (E) to fine tune the spray pattern. Turn counterclockwise to widen the spray pattern. Turn clockwise to narrow the spray pattern. See Fig. 8. V. You are now ready for production spraying CAUTION When using catalyzed fluids, observe pot life as recommended by the fluid manufacturer. Always flush the system before the pot life has expired to prevent dried fluid with may be difficult to clean out and may damage the system. VI. When to shut down the system Shut down the system at the end of the work shift and before checking, adjusting, cleaning, or repairing the system. Always follow the Pressure relief procedure on page 8.

10 I. When to flush Flushing 5. Connect the air line (C) to the pump. II. Before the first time use. When changing colors. Before fluid can dry or settle out in a dormant system (observe the recommended fluid pot life on catalyzed fluids). Before storing the system. How to flush WARNING To reduce the risk of serious injury whenever you are instructed to relieve pressure, always follow the Pressure Relief Procedure on page Relieve the pressure. 2. Remove the air cap before flushing. Clean it separately. 3. Place the pump on a grounded metal pail of compatible solvent. TIghten the thumbscrews securely. 4. Make sure the air regulators (5a, 5b) and master air valve (A) are closed. NOTE: The gun air regulator (5b) always stays closed during flushing. 6. Open the master air valve (A). 7. Slowly open the pump air regulator (5a) until the pump starts. The pump will stall against pressure when it is primed. 8. Hold the gun against a grounded metal waste pail. While triggering the gun, slowly open the fluid regulator (6) until the fluid flows smoothly. When solvent appears, release the gun trigger. 9. For a first-time flush: trigger the gun and flush with solvent for 30 seconds. For flushing after spraying fluid: trigger the gun and flush with solvent until the system is thoroughly cleaned. 10. Repeat the procedure with clean solvent, if needed. 11. Raise the suction tube (27) out of the solvent. Trigger the gun and run the pump until air comes from the gun. 12. Relieve the pressure. 13. You are now ready to prime the system with another fluid or to store the system.
