Racers, Are you getting ready for the ski/racing season? How about something way more fun than exercising? Try rollerblading and do more biking! You can emulate skiing on rollerblades by making slalom and grand slalom turns. It is even better if you pick out a gentle slope where you can pick up speed and glide. But watch out for traffic and wear safety gear wear safety gear!! It is fun, great exercise, and you can do it all year around. And biking works too! We got a good start with the October bike ride in the wine country. That was a workout that was fun! The Open League Race Committee (OLRC) met on October 1st. We have basically the same volunteers as last season, so expect good coordination. Debi Phelps stepped up as Chair. Dave Cunningham is still involved, and was in attendance. Race fees and volunteer fees are being negotiated. There is no limit to the number of times one can volunteer. It is so easy! The race schedule for is now firm except for Mother Nature s changes. The last I looked the OLRC website was updated (see below). This is our back-up source for the racing schedule and other exciting information. We are on our way to another exiting season, with some snow already falling. Registration for winter-season, racing starts on November 1 st. This is now done from the Open League website. Yes this means that summer season racing is over so sorry! The latest racing schedule is shown included in the newsletter. It is also posted on our website. Recognize that the Open League racing now coordinated with Sierra League and Singles League racing. Some races are even combined. You can sneak in a few more races in the season for a very nominal amount ($20 each). Check out the LINK on the Open League website ( For viewing your old race results, and the competition, or last minute info on upcoming races visit the Open League Race Committee (OLRC) website ( From this website, you can also view activities from the other leagues and the associated racing and ski associations. Great racing Keith Wilson Keith Wilson Race Director BAC NEEDS YOUR HELP!!!!! The BAC has 3 open Board positions: Secretary, Marketing & Webmaster. If you or someone you know has expertise in any of these areas, please contact Dennis Heffley (BAC President) for additional information. He can be contacted at either skyheffley@aol.com or (925)

3 President s Message Castro Valley Ski Club Newsletter A Word from our VP Hi All, I hope everyone had an appropriately spooky Halloween and the hangover from that candy you said you weren t going to eat is a thing of the past. Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, for the obvious reasons, but also because it seems to mark the time until the snow flies and we are truly into the ski season. Yes, it is time to tune up those skis, start doing your squats, Karen Wehrman President and getting those ski clothes out of storage. As usual, I implore you all to start thinking snow asap. Speaking of spooky, it needs to be said that there will be a spooky amount of great things up for auction at our upcoming auction event on November 13. If you haven t contacted Eva Lanphear (auction chairwoman) with an interesting item to auction, please do so and join in the fun and the great purpose of supporting Disabled Sports USA in the bargain. You will find the form to send Eva here in the Skizette, so have some fun with it. Come earlier than usual that evening at Don Jose s, around 6:00, for a complimentary margarita or two, bring your checkbook and expect to have a great time watching your fellow members/friends outbid each other on those coveted items. Please remember, too, that Pat Green has arranged a very elegant holiday party for us again this year - celebrate the season on Wednesday, December 4, at Crow Canyon Country Club. Pat always does a great job at organizing our parties - thank you, Pat Green, party giver extraordinaire!! You will also see a flyer for our annual ski trip to Mammoth, organized by Jim Silva. Please consider joining us for some great skiing and some pretty good socializing, too. Mammoth is a great hill with some great conditions, in fact they are opening for skiing this week with respectable snowfall levels. It s about time to start thinking of things wintry. We are no longer saving daylight, and there s still some lingering snow here in Truckee in shady places. If you haven t signed on yet for the next main local event, the Christmas Party, do it. Pat Green has arranged a terrific venue for us again, and great food, subsidized for those attending. See the flyer in this Skizette. For skiing plans, see the enclosed flyer on Squaw/ Alpine season passes. There s a special deal with corporate rates for BAC member clubs only, with login data good through November 11. Do the math, it doesn t take many individual ticket buys to break even. And you wouldn t want to be out on the blackout dates anyway, unless you adore the long lift lines. And you should be seeing this in time to remember our annual auction. There re great values, and a good opportunity to support DSUSA, our disabled sports main fund raiser on November 13. Hope to see you there. Ron Ron White Vice President These are all future events, but a big Thank You goes to Maggie and Ray Jong for organizing a fun bike ride in Livermore on October 12. A great ride and a wonderful lunch at Garre Winery were enjoyed by those attending and we re hoping that this event might also become an annual event. Well, I ll close with my familiar refrain - so many fun activities organized by so many wonderful volunteers - we are truly blessed. Karen 3

6 13!!!!!! The Auction is November A gentle reminder to get your cards and letters to me about the wonderful items you are donating to the auction. The auction is always a fun time for me and I hope for you as well. It is a good time to have wonderful competition for bidding on the treasures that are offered for auction. Remember, the auction is the main money maker for the club and 25 % of the proceeds go to DSUSA to buy equipment or pay for a wounded warrior to learn to ski and be physical again-in a sport we all love. So let me hear from you. Big or small item- all matter!!! Every dollar counts. Thanks Vanna ( I mean Eva) 6

11 Safety First For The Season's Start Opening day of our local resort has snow enthusiasts as excited as kids on Christmas morning. We all want to get out there and pick up right where we left off at closing day of the previous season. We're caught up in the moment, but we need to take the time to slow down and remember that we're not invincible but rather much more susceptible to early-season injury. The snow base is comprised of mostly machine-made snow for the first weeks of the ski/ride season. This is much harder and less forgiving snow than we may get used to during the height of the season. It hurts when we fall, and this hard ribbon of snow is not very forgiving. Start the season by taking your equipment to a ski shop for a full function check. We may be breaking in new boots or are on a new pair of skis. Be patient while getting familiar with the changes in performance the new equipment may bring on. Seek professional shop help if something about your boots, skis, or bindings doesn't feel right. The staff should be able to fix your problems or send you to the right place to do so. Lastly-never borrow equipment without making the same prior arrangements regarding a function check. The best advice is to take it easy during those first days back. Focus on form. Take a lesson with a professional ski instructor. They will help squash bad tendencies before they become habits. "Getting a lesson at the first of the year is really smart because we take skiing one step at a time," says Brendan Doran, a professional ski instructor. "There's no rush to learn a bunch of things all at once. You're way less likely to get hurt when you're not overwhelmed with the sport." Spend a few minutes to warm up and stretch before your first run. In your room, at the lodge, or on top of the mountain are all perfect places to get loose. Swing your legs and arms to get your blood pumping. Gently stretch your hamstrings, quadriceps, and hips. Hold each stretch for 30 seconds. Stay stagnant and don't "bounce" in and out of the pose. The stretch should feel good, not painful. By the time we're in the throws of winter we'll be strong, fit, and ready to non-stop every run on the first big snow day of the year. Enjoy being back on snow rather than becoming a statistic of early-season ski injuries. BRETT BUCKLES, FITNESS EDITOR (article submitted by Sandy Beecher) 11
