With the mission of saving lives and reducing consequences of accidents, POC has taken its quest a big step further by launching its new race helmets Orbicseries, managing previously unknown risks and violence, discovered in our cross scientific research, changing the game in the category. There is a new POC entry level VPD 2.0 back protector, Spine VPD 2.0 Back, dramatically exceeding the demands and certifications needed. It s extremely light, supple and comfortable, offering the highest degree of protection. On the goggles side there are three new models, the patent pending LID, the new giant Retina BIG and the funky Iris Stripe. Optical quality, versatility and performance is enhanced by a number of new lenses combining new technological findings such as partial polarization, hydrophobic and photochromic treatments, syntax mirroring and new materials. The extremely successful Fornix helmet from this season has a sibling fitted with the anti rotational MIPS system, Fornix Backcountry MIPS. There is a new line of back packs with integrated back protection and the long term co-lab together with Beats by Dre, promoting audio and communication with helmets is here. 7 POC Helmet Concepts & Technologies super ventilated helmet By studying the air flow inside the helmets, POC has been able to create super ventilated helmets with adjustable air flow to adapt it to the conditions. The combination of goggle vents, chimney vents, VDSAP and adjustable vents makes the helmets very ventilated, with a maintained low weight and protection. eight different helmet concepts & Technologies for several different needs Frontal Aramid in-mold helmets An in-mold helmet construction is very lightweight, but lacks penetration resistance due to the thin shell. By molding a sheet of aramid to the core, the low weight is maintained and the protection is radically improved. This is called Aramid Penetration Barrier. Synapsis Carbon Fiber helmets POCs carbon fiber shell defies the problems of excessive stiffness and thickness that the industrial carbon fiber poses, by using a ductile matrix as a carrier for the fiber. The resulting super-thin and super-light shell is a premium feature of the Super Skull Comp. Aramid bridges By molding aramid bridges to the core of the helmet, the impact forces are spread over a larger surface, and at the same time the helmet gains structural stability through the bonding of the unbreakable aramid weave and the EPS liner. It allows for a very lightweight and very well ventilated helmet. Using multi-impact EPP (Expanded Polypropylene) as core material creates a helmet that will protect your head over and over again. This violence is more severe than expected and led us to the development of the Multi-impact deflector panels, that decrease the transmitted forces of these impacts and increase the shock absorbing capacity of the helmet. MIPS Short for Multi-directional Impact Protection System, the MIPS system protects the brain from rotational forces that often occur in oblique impacts. A normal helmet is created to absorb shocks by compression very efficiently, but is not as good at the rotational forces. The MIPS system absorbs these forces by allowing a small rotation of the outer shell around the inner helmet in case of an impact. Cortex DH Helmet equipped with MIPS POC has developed a body armor technology; VPD - Visco Elastic Polymer Dough. The material is a Visco-Elastic foam, which is highly dampening. When VPD gets exposed to impact the material stiffens and has an extreme absorption of energy. One of the genially functions of VPD is that the dampening functions progressively and adapts itself to the force of the impact. The material is soft and comfortable and adapts to create an individual fit for every user. VPD offers a high degree of flexibility and is very tear resistant. 8 Head Different helmet concepts for several different needs When POC first started up, there were two types of helmets on the market. The traditional helmet with a hard shell and a liner of softer expanded polystyrene (EPS) which has good penetration resistance and energy distribution properties. The disadvantage is that upon impact, the hard structure causes a sudden stop. The brain may continue to move in the direction of travel and the impact is not absorbed very well. The hard shell is also quite heavy which may cause the helmet to bounce off the ground on impact. These properties can lead to brain damage and whiplash injuries. The second type of helmet is the in-mold type, which originated in the bike business. These molded helmets have a thinner shell of hard plastic that covers the ears and the back of the neck. Normally, both the traditional hard shell and inmold helmets rely on expanded Polystyrene (EPS) for the shock absorption. EPS absorbs energy by plastic deformation, meaning it is deformed permanently upon impact. Therefore, a helmet liner made of EPS will not be good at absorbing repetitive shocks. Another aspect that is not taken into account in traditional helmets are the effects of rotational violence, which is a major risk in oblique impacts. Semi-hard shell 2.0 helmets When first developed and launched season 20/20, the aim of the semi hard shell helmets was to combine the advantages of in-mold and hard shell helmets. The excellent energy absorption properties from the in-mold helmets was achieved by using a thin and light outer shell and the ability to withstand sharp object penetration was solved by adding a barrier of ballistic aramid. POC has been refining the concept into the second generation of these helmets, the semi hard shell 2.0 collection. By studying today s top ski racers, it was evident that a helmet used for ski racing is likely to be exposed to repeated violence from hitting gates at high speed. The updated helmets are therefore equipped with a liner of Expanded Polypropylene (EPP) instead of EPS. The difference between the materials is that EPP, unlike EPS, does not deform permanently on impact and is therefore suitable to absorb repetitive shocks. The outer shell is also updated for increased durability and optimized for the new liner material (all Skull helmets). Aramid in-mold helmets With the amazing properties of our Skull Comp helmet, we have taken the technology further by incorporating the Aramid ballistic penetration barrier APB, into a series of in-mold helmets Synapsis. This has enabled us to overcome the traditional problems of in-mold helmets breaking easily and not being able to withstand penetration. The Synapsis helmets are designed to offer extreme lightweight, ventilation and comfort without compromising safety. Double shell helmets Improving properties such as better shock absorption, lower weight and penetration resistance are some of the major advantages made possible by using POC s patent pending Aramid ballistic penetration barrier: APB. Transferring these qualities and lessons learned into a fully ventilated system has led to the new revolutionary, patent pending; Ventilated Double Shell Anti Penetration: VDSAP. The concept was initially developed for the Receptor+ all season helmet. A helmet developed and certified in Europe and the US for skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, biking and water sports. VDSAP is built with double shells, placed offset, for maximum penet ration resistance and has channels in between to evacuate heat, moisture or water. The inner shell is an extremely thin in-mold shell, while the outer shell is a hard shell of ABS and PC. The properties are amazing and used in all Receptor helmets and the Cortex DH. Optimized vent helmets Some markets asked us to come up with a super ventilated helmet, adjustable for cold days. With the experience gained from previous models, innovations and patents, we came up with a cocktail of different ventilation concepts, all included in one helmet. When using an adjustable system, there is also the challenge of keeping weight down. The solution combines three different ventilation systems. At the front, there was the POC patent VDSAP, a double shell solution where air is transported between two layers of shell, to avoid direct wind and to withstand penetration from sharp objects. At the back, there are vent slots for the helmet to function as a chimney, where air is pulled from the front to the rear. On top, the helmet has generous ventilation with six vents, that may be closed or semi-closed with a turning-devise. This combination makes the helmet very airy and very light (all Frontal helmets). Carbon Fiber helmets So far, carbon fiber helmets haven t made too much sense. The methods of industrially laying carbon fiber have been counterproductive to the goal of thin, light shells that deform or destruct at certain stress points. The shells have been too stiff and too thick for use in ski helmets. However, thanks to a new method, we can make a super thin and super light carbon fiber shell, which is highly flexible and makes sense to use in a ski helmet. Unfortunately the technique is still very expensive but it s so good that we we chose to introduce it in the high end line of Skull Helmets; Super Skull Comp. Multi directional impact protection system helmets Traditional helmet testing methods only test vertical falls. However, the real situation is that if crashing at speed, the impact will be oblique. This means that the helmet and head will rotate when hitting the ground, resulting in rotational forces to the brain. The brain is highly sensitive to this kind of violence. By applying the MIPS technology in POC helmets, the different layers in the helmets are allowed to move in relation to each other. Thanks to that, rotational violence can be controlled. Aramid bridge shell helmets When looking for low weight in combination with a tough and durable structure, we added aramid in strategic locations just under the outer shell, molded together with the foam liner material. The unbreakable aramid weave bonds with the foam liner, adding a totally new structural stability. Combi- ning the unbreakable aramid weave with the foam liner creates a new structural stability. The concept was first launched in our trail mountainbike helmet Trabec, and for this season, we also use it in our light free skiing helmet Fornix. Multi-Impact Deflector Panel After having studied today s top ski racers, we realized that the racing helmets are exposed to countless hits by gates at the front. This violence is way more severe than we had ever imagined, and the discovery led us to developing the Multi-Impact Deflector Panels, featured in the new line of Skull Orbic helmets. The deflector panels decrease the transmitted forces of these impacts, and increase the shock absorbing capacity of the helmet, to ensure that the helmet performance remains at the highest level for the time when it s really needed: in a real crash. In the deflector panels of the Skull Orbic Comp, we integrated our premium shock absorbing material VPD 2.0 with outstanding energy absorbing properties, previously only used in our body armor. 9 Skull Orbic This is a long but crucial story in the quest to save lives. Winter 23/14 sees the launch of the Skull Orbic Comp, POCs new race helmet. Years of testing and experience combined with the new, stricter FIS rules, and our alarming findings of the real forces that the brain is exposed to during a GS race training session, pushed us to bring our race helmets up a notch. Using innovative new materials and techniques, the Skull Orbic brings helmet performance to a previously unseen level. When POC launched its first race helmet, the Skull Comp, it was a game-changing product in many ways. The helmet used an extremely thin shell and a sandwich construction of EPS and pneumatic urethane, which proved to absorb energy fantastically. To improve the penetration resistance of the thin shell a patent using aramid to prevent penetration from outside objects was developed. Since then the helmet has been constantly improved as new and important findings have arose. After some time we noticed how the shells cracked. Yes, the shells were thin but this happened to an extent that we couldn t explain or understand, despite testing over and over again. Eventually the answer came to us, step by step. By watching skiers filmed with high speed cameras, we realized that certain individuals deflected the gates with the helmet, in search for the shortest line. This technique appeared only a few years before, after FIS made the helmet mandatory in all ski racing disciplines. Suddenly the skiers could hit the gate without pain. The rule changed the technique. Still, we couldn t make the shells break in the lab, despite being hit at speeds 5 times higher than reality. We started investigating more helmets and it showed that every hit with a gate left a permanent dent in the absorbing EPS on the inside, even if the shell was intact. When that denting was big enough, there was no material backing the shell. There was simply an empty room behind the shell and hitting a shell without that support, the shells broke immediately. Big challenge! In addition to the fact that shells were breaking, we now knew that there were many helmets out there, our own and our competitors, with large spaces inside, deformed with totally useless EPS that wouldn t absorb any energy when really needed in a real crash. The first thing we did was to change liner material from EPS to the most advanced multi-impact EPP there was in the market - a material that had been developed outside our industry that absorbed energy as good as EPS, twice as expensive but without denting permanently. So what was gained? We wanted to stop the shells from breaking, but the biggest gain was a helmet that would perform as well in a crash after a season of hitting gates as it would if it was new. A helmet with a shell that didn t break because it had constant support from a material that didn t deform and thanks to that an energy absorbing material that was still performing at its best, no matter how many deflected gates historically, when really needed, like in a crash. We had solved the problem. But on the other hand we were astonished and worried by the severe violence to the helmets when deflecting gates, and we started to wonder: -What would the actual energy be hitting a gate and what is being transmitted to ones brain? After some research, we contacted an American scientist Mr who had developed a system to measure transmitted energies in football players helmets. We got to use his system, mounting accelerometers inside ski helmets and having skiers running through numerous GS courses passing hundreds and hundreds of gates, everything being monitored and measured. The result astonished us: an adult male skier maxing 70km/h got to 70Gs during one single training session! Using the same system, a football player hitting another player head to head and reaching the force of 70Gs, is taken off the field to rest for at least a day to prevent brain damage. What could be done? POC started a collaboration together with the Mid Sweden University and the Swedish National Winter Sports Research Centre in Åre, building a machine that would test the performance of different combinations of materials, shells and liners, shapes, frictions and speeds, over and over. The different concepts were evaluated short, mid and long term with anything from one extreme hit, to thousands of hits at exactly the same spot. The result from these experiments and findings is Skull Orbic Race a new helmet based on the superior race helmets Skull Comp and Skull Comp DH, improved and refined with new materials and techniques to surpass the recent and very accurate FIS rule for alpine racing helmets with more progressive demands on helmet performance. The Skull Orbic Comp has a raised area in the front, allowing for more energy absorbing material and therefore travel. This part also deflects gates faster from the helmet, reducing the time the brain is stressed by energy and increasing the durability of the construction and the shell. The raised frontal area consists of a layer of VPD, POCs patented visco-elastic polymer dough. The VPD interacts perfectly with the multi-impact EPP, decreasing the transmitted energy from hitting gates by more than 50% compared to other race helmets. Moreover, it will always perform at its ultimate in a crash, its energy absorbing properties remaining at a high level regardless of gate impact history. Furthermore the liner has a layer of Aramid for penetration resistance but also for durability, holding the vital inner EPP/VPD liner together if the shell would crack from severe outside energy. This helmet is created for real life use, where a helmet is exposed to a lot of violence throughout its lifetime, and should protect just as well over time. Many, if not most race helmets on the market, even the new models, are still constructed with an EPS core, that might lose its performance to a point where it s no longer safe in a real impact

28 About Lenses About Lenses VLT Visible Light Transmission VLT is a measurement that specifies the percentage of light coming through the lens reaching your eyes. A clear lens for dark conditions have around 90% VLT and a very dark colored lens with mirror for sunny conditions may have down to 5% VLT. Most all round lenses have between %. POC goggles have alternatives for all kinds of conditions. Please note that the VLT for one tint can differ a bit if the lens has a single or double construction and if it has a spherical or cylindrical shape. vs. light conditions The color spectrum runs from blue to red with a lot of different shades in between. The color sensation and perception will differ between individuals and due to this the choice of lens color will is to an extent a subjective matter. One basic rule explains the contrast enhancing effect by studying the color spectrum. When choosing a lens with yellow, orange, pink or red color it blocks out more of the blue end of the color spectrum. This enhances contrast, enabling you to make out shapes, objects and bumps in the snow more clearly. These lenses work well in low light, fog and flat light, but also in moderate light. However some individuals experience good contrast by blocking the other end of the spectra as well, by using a blue tint. In bright light, dark tints will keep your eyes more comfortable. There is also the possibility of choosing a brighter tint but with mirror coating to block some of the light to keep your eyes comfortable.
