1 BIG PINE SCHOOLS SKI & SNOWBOARD PROGRAM Welcome to the SKI & SNOWBOARD YEAR! Mammoth Mountain is once again offering the student ski and snowboard program to schools wishing to participate. Please read all the information very carefully and return all required forms and payments as indicated. SKIING AND BOARDING IS A HAZARDOUS SPORT. SKI BINDINGS DO NOT ALWAYS RELEASE AND DO NOT PROTECT THE SKIER 100% OF THE TIME. IMPORTANT DATES & FORMS FOR THE SKI AND SNOWBOARD PROGRAM DEADLINE TO RETURN SIGN UP FORMS TO MR. STEELE: Friday, December 19, SKI REGISTRATION 1 RENTAL AGREEMENT 1 MEDICAL TREATMENT 1 MMSA LIABILITY ASB CARDS WILL BE USED FOR SKI PASSES THIS YEAR AND ARE MANDATORY. TENTATIVE 1 st SKI DATE: Thursday, January 8, 2008 GRADES GOING - To Be Announced (check for more info) The Big Pine Ski & Snowboard Program will begin its season following the Christmas Break (weather permitting) on Thursday, January 8, A schedule of dates and grades is forthcoming. The schedule is subject to change due to weather and unforeseen circumstance. There are six ski and snowboard trips per grade level planned this year (weather permitting). Ski trips will be taken on Thursdays. SNOWBOARDING Snowboarding is available to grades 6-12 only. Grades 4-5 may only ski. MANDATORY SKI PASSES Mammoth Mt. is accepting school student body cards for ski passes this year. It is mandatory for students to have a valid A.S.B. card to receive a $5.00 lift ticket. Middle school and high school cards are available through A.S.B. representatives. Elementary students need to contact the school office or Christa Padilla, the ASB Advisor. Please allow time for personnel to make elementary cards. LAST MINUTE REQUESTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. PLAN AHEAD. 24-HOUR NOTICE IS ADVISABLE. STUDENTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO WEAR THEIR PASSES BEFORE BOARDING THE SCHOOL SKI BUS ON EACH TRIP. 1
2 SKI COST: There are several combinations of costs depending on the individual student s circumstances. The School Board has adopted a $10.00, per student, per trip, transportation fee this year. The cost of your package will be paid in weekly installments. The payment is due each Monday (or first day of a school week following breaks), before the student will be listed to ski or board for that Thursday s trip. Deliver payments to Mr. Steele (Room 7 in the main building). Make money order, or checks payable to: Big Pine Ski Program. The exact amount of cash will also be accepted. School personnel cannot provide change. Own Equipment: Lift ticket + transportation = $15.00 per trip Age 12 and under: Lift ticket + Rent skis or snowboard + helmet + transportation = $30.00 per trip Age 13 and over: Lift ticket + Rent skis or snowboard + helmet + transportation = $40.00 per trip Helmets are required. * Bring check, money order, or exact change to Mr. Steele s room by 3:30 p.m. Monday afternoon to be included in the trip for that week. A grade eligibility check will be done to insure a student s eligibility for that week. Two or more F s will result in ineligibility for that trip. * If you have an athletic trip or will be away during the scheduled time, see Mr. Steele before school, or leave payment in the office. PROGRAM ELEGIBILITY STANDARDS: The ski program is a community supported school activity. Participation in the program is a privilege that our students enjoy. Because of this, we have certain standards that students must adhere to in order to maintain their eligibility for the program. It is important that all students realize that they can be eliminated from their day or skiing (or from the program completely) for any of the following reasons: 1. Failure to follow school rules or guidelines (Extra student handbooks are available in the school office). 2. Serving suspension (home or in-school) on a ski day. 3. Have not served any outstanding after school detentions. 4. Failing two or more classes the week of the trip (grade check form must be shown to Mr. Steele) 5. Declared ineligible by a teacher or principal for academic or behavioral problems. 6. Failure by a parent/guardian to sign required forms for Big Pine Ski & Snowboard Program. 7. Any student requiring discipline while on a ski trip may be banned from ALL future ski days for the remainder of the season. If it occurs the last ski day, ban will be enforced the following year. In all of the above circumstances, an effort will be made to notify the student of ineligibility prior to his/her ski day. It is our sincere hope that each student has an opportunity to participate in the ski program. However, it is a PRIVILEGE -- not a right -- your child must earn a seat on the bus. WEATHER CONDITIONS: The Bishop radio stations will announce between 6:15 and 7:00 a.m. on Thursday mornings if students are not skiing. Some trips may be cancelled due to weather. Make-up trips will be planned as weather and season permit. 2
3 SKI DAY SCHEDULE: Students should arrive at school by 7:00 a.m. At the mountain they are required to return to the bus by 3:15 p.m. The bus will arrive in Big Pine approximately 5:00 p.m. CLOTHING: Please be sure to have your child BRING WARM CLOTHES. Weather can change quickly in the mountains. Students are required to wear hats, gloves, long pants, sun block, and goggles or sunglasses. Eye protection is mandatory, as eyes can be sunburned from the reflection of the sun off the snow. Sunglasses with windshields on the sides are not recommended because they block peripheral vision. Students should wear thermal underwear, warm clothes and a warm jacket. It is a good idea to have an extra sweater or sweatshirt that can be left on the bus if it is not needed. Dry pants are advisable in case pants get wet. We try to eliminate extremely cold and windy days, but the weather is often unpredictable. Helmets are now required to prevent brain injuries. They may be rented for $ $8.00 depending on age. * If your student will be spending a lot of time on the mountain over the next several years, you might find it more economical to buy a helmet. The Mammoth Mountain Ski School recommends the fully adjustable Giro Ricochet as an affordable option. It can be purchased for $54.00 at the Mountain Shop. Other bargains can be found locally at Value Sports and elsewhere. LUNCH: ALL STUDENTS MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS IN ORDER TO BOARD THE BUS: HAT SUNGLASSES OR GOGGLES GLOVES COAT and appropriate water resistant clothing (jeans are not acceptable) SUNSCREEN A.S.B. CARD. HELMETS are required as serious injury could occur without them. They may be rented for a cost of $5.00 (kids 12 years and under) or $8.00 (kids 13 years and older). Students should bring a large lunch and drinks in unbreakable containers. Students should not leave the bus a mess. Students eat their lunch in the lodge. No students are allowed in the Sports Shop unless an adult from the program accompanies them. SKI & SNOWBOARD LESSONS: Students will participate in a three-hour morning session with a Big Pine instructor included in the cost of the trip. After student lessons and lunch, students may free ski with a partner or group on runs approved by their instructor. Students must be back in the bus, ready to leave at 3:15 p.m. Additional lessons can be purchased through Mammoth Mountain Ski School. A variety of packages are available. If a student is late, they will miss one ski trip. Additional tardiness will result in removal from the program. 3
4 SKIING & SNOWBOARDING RULES: 1. Teachers will inform students of their eligibility status, and report the names of ineligible students, to Mr. Steele by Friday afternoon prior to Thursday ski days. 2. Students must have served all detentions to be eligible for a trip. 3. Students are responsible for their equipment at all times. Know where you put your equipment while you are eating lunch. Do not take someone else s equipment. 4. Afternoon skiing and boarding is limited to runs authorized by your instructor. 5. When students are afternoon skiing, they must be in the company of at least one friend. SKIING OR BOARDING ALONE IS NOT ALLOWED. 6. Students must remain in their assigned ski class for their lesson. The ONLY time classes are rearranged is because both instructors in the two groups desire the change. 7. Students should ski on ski runs where their instructors have taken them, not in the trees. Beginning students should not try new runs unless; an adult accompanies them. 8. If a student becomes separated from the lesson group, he/she should wait at the bottom of the lift or return to Jill s room in the main lodge. 9. Students should ski/board courteously and safely at all times: A. Students must wear helmets. B. Ski/board under control and in such a manner that you can stop or avoid other skiers/boarders or objects. C. When skiing/boarding downhill, or overtaking another boarder/skier, you must avoid the boarder/skier below. D. You must not stop where you obstruct a trail or are not visible from above. E. When entering a trail or starting downhill, yield to other skiers/boarders. F. You shall keep off closed trails and posted areas and observe all posted signs. Failure to observe any of the above rules will result in disciplinary action. The student may have his/her lift ticket immediately removed. The student may miss a future ski trip or be removed from the program depending on the nature and consequences of his/her offense. Sincerely, Tim Steele Ski & Snowboard Program Coordinator Ms. Pamela Jones - Superintendent // Principal, Big Pine Unified School District 4
