2 After an Alzheimer s Diagnosis: Separating Myth from Fact By Ava M. Stinnett When you or a loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer s or another type of dementia, you will likely start looking for as much information as possible in order to be proactive and cope with the disease. There are countless magazine and newspaper articles, personal blogs, and websites, as well as popular books on the subject. It s not uncommon to feel confused by a mountain of facts and figures regarding causes, symptoms, and prevention. So let s take a step back and look at common misunderstandings about Alzheimer s disease and the truths behind them. Myth: Dementia is the same as Alzheimer s disease. Fact: Dementia is not a specific disease. It is a descriptive term for a group of symptoms (e.g., memory loss, inability to solve problems, impaired language skills) caused by various disorders that affect the brain. Some of the 70+ causes of dementia include Alzheimer s disease, vascular dementia, stroke, nutritional deficiencies, and infections. Myth: Only old people get Alzheimer s. Fact: Although the majority of people with Alzheimer s are older than 65, early-onset Alzheimer s disease can strike people in their 40s or 50s. It s rare, however, it accounts for only 5 10% of all U.S. Alzheimer s cases. Myth: Alzheimer s affects everyone the same way. Fact: Perhaps you ve heard the saying When you ve met one person with Alzheimer s, you ve met one person with Alzheimer s (Alz Connected, 2017). Although there are many similarities in how the disease progresses from one stage to another, behaviors and symptoms vary for each individual. Due to the complexity of the brain, they may also vary from day to day for the same person. Myth: We know what causes Alzheimer s and how to treat it. Fact: Over the years there have been many reports claiming that Alzheimer s is caused by aluminum cans, silver dental fillings, flu shots, or artificial sweeteners. Other studies tout the idea that a healthy lifestyle including diet, aerobic exercise, staying socially active, and engaging in mental games and puzzles can help prevent Alzheimer s. However, the scientific evidence remains unclear. Myth: Dietary supplements can treat and reverse the effects of Alzheimer s disease. Fact: Dietary supplements such as fish oil, ginkgo biloba, lithium, and high-dose vitamins have not proven to be of benefit in treating Alzheimer s. Further, while there are prescription medications that help in managing the symptoms of the disease and improve one s quality of life, they do not cure, stop, or slow the progression of Alzheimer s disease. After a diagnosis, it s important to filter information effectively. Select the sources that are the most beneficial and relevant to you and/or the individual with Alzheimer s. Talk with medical professionals about changes in diet, exercise, and medication including vitamin supplements. Just as organizations like the Red Cross take disaster response seriously by being prepared to respond, you, too, can take steps to best manage the symptoms and course of the disease. 4 Merlin Campbell was born February 16, 1931 on a farm in Sioux City, Iowa; however, his family eventually moved to Oakland, California where Merlin spent memorable years at Oakland Tech. Soon after high school, however, Merlin went into the Air Force where he was stationed in Washington DC. During that time, Merlin found the love of his life, Doris out there, and married her in After putting his time in the service, Merlin moved back to the Northern California region, working as a firefighter for many years until an injury provoked an early retirement. After, Merlin worked as an insurance salesman, and then as a dispatch officer for the Contra Costa County Sheriff s Office. After retiring from being a dispatch officer, Merlin moved to Vacaville, CA, traveled the US in a motor home, and spent more time with their five wonderful children, and the many grandchildren. Around the Carlton, Merlin is a true gentleman whom often enjoys his solidarity, but also a good one-on-one conversation. LaNette Wilson was born in the ever beautiful city of San Diego, California in 1994 and lived with her wonderful grandmother, Nettie-Marie. LaNette has a very big family, and is very close to her youngest sister, Amari, and her younger brother DiAndre; but she spent even more time with her cousins when she was growing up. LaNette moved up to Sacramento when she was given an opportunity of a lifetime. While living out here, LaNette is exploring her opportunities in health care, and hopes to work as an EMT very soon while she continues to works full time at Carlton, Outside of Carlton, LaNette loves to read, crotchet, draw, play the ukulele, guitar, piano, get down to Gospel music, and plays a variety of other instruments. One of LaNette s favorite quotes is just keep swimming.

12 Preventative Exercise vs. Restorative Exercise By age 65, people who haven t engaged in regular exercise may incur a decrease in their physical muscular strength level by as much as 80%. Muscle strengthening and balance exercises can reduce the risk of falls up to 45%. Live 2 B Healthy s preventative exercise programs focus on improving strength, balance, and mobility. Remaining physically active in exercise before an injury or illness occurs, greatly reduces the chance of needing physical therapy or restorative exercise programs later to recover from an injury or fall. Functional decline in the elderly is often the result of a sedentary lifestyle, rather than the effects of the normal aging process. According to the U.S. Department of Aging, fitness programs can be effectively used to achieve the following goals for seniors: Lessen the degree of disability for seniors Increase muscular strength and endurance which deteriorates through inactivity Improve joint flexibility and range of motion by keeping them loose and flexible Strengthen bone mass which is weakened in later stage by osteoporosis There is always one consistent finding in health research: Exercise helps you live longer and better. Live 2 B Healthy is dedicated to helping seniors remain strong and healthy to keep them mobile and active throughout their aging years. Keeping seniors actively involved in preventative exercise programs will reduce their risks of becoming ill, or experiencing a fall or injury. Regular exercise in seniors also aids in slowing down the aging process, and reducing the need of drug treatments. Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending. ~Maria R., Live 2 B Healthy Participant u u
