We never get along and we had a fight again in the evening. I went to my room and slept early. Suddenly in the middle of the night I heard strange noises and saw a strange blue light coming from the corridor. I also heard whispers calling my name. I wasn t scared at all because I thought my brother played a joke to scare me. When I opened my door I saw a ghost in white clothes. It ran away. I was very angry because I thought it was Justin. So I followed him. But when I opened my brother s room I saw him in his bed. So the ghost was real! Oh my God! Of course I called my parents and they came the next day! 2 Reading comprehension: The Sun had three daughters: the eldest was Autumn, the middle was Summer, and the youngest was Spring. They led a gay life in their father s home. But then, it was time to send them to the Earth. The Sun s children were three seasons. First was Spring. She was so pretty in her youth that Sun decided to make her a present of forever youth. People must like her, the Sun thought. Three months later he sent Summer to the Earth. You are a beauty too! said the Sun, I shall make you a present of eternal beauty. And, at last it was time for Autumn to leave her father s house. Take all the gold I have. Be kind, give people all you have, and people will love you, the Sun told her. On the other side of the world, Winter, the only daughter of Frost (Ice), was getting ready for her journey. She was also a season on Earth. Her father worried about her. She was a very plain girl. She had no rich clothes. He couldn t make her any presents. Frost got together all the wealth he had and it was just a handful of silver. And, that was all Winter had when she stepped on Earth. It became very cold. The birds flew away. The water in the rivers soon turned into the ice. People put on warm clothes and hurried to their houses. They closed their doors and windows. No one asked Winter into their houses. No one wanted to look at her. Then, she started to work. She made little snow flake and tossed them to the sky, and the snow flakes started to fall slowly down on the Earth. The Earth was changing. Snow covered the fields. There was white snow on the trees and houses. Winter wanted to make everything beautiful and white. It was hard work, but she didn t feel tired. She was ready to give all she had to people. She threw all her silver on the Earth. The silver mixed with the snow and it began to sparkle. Winter forgot about time. She did not see how the door of one house opened and a man came out and stopped in surprise. Everything was sparkling. The houses looked like ice palaces, and the children were skiing and skating. All over the Earth people began to talk about Winter. They started to wait for her to come. They started singing songs about her and writing poems and music to her. But, still they are never sorry to say good-bye to winter.

However, I grew up in Australia and surfed in Sydney. And I ve surfed in Indonesia, in Hawaii and California. Int.: Let s think of three beaches or three places in the world that you ve been to, and compare them. Bruce: Well, Fistral Beach in Cornwall, England, Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia. And we could say Sunset Beach in Oahu, Hawaii. Int.: What about the size of the waves between the three places? Bruce: The three places have very different sized waves. The smallest waves would be in Newquay in England. It can get some big waves in winter, but they are generally small waves. Sydney would be a mediumsized wave, with surf all year round. Some are bigger and some are smaller in summer. And Hawaii is where you get the biggest waves in the world. And especially in Hawaii s winter from December to February you can have absolutely huge waves measuring up to 60 feet. Int.: 60 feet. What s that in metres? Bruce: In metres, that s 20 metres. Int.: 20 metres high. What about the temperature in the three places? Is it very different? Bruce: The temperatures are quite different. Newquay is the coldest of the three, with temperatures going as low as 4º Celsius. Australia is very warm in summer; you can just wear a pair of shorts. And Hawaii is warm all year round. The water doesn t change more than two or three degrees all year. Int.: So that s the warmest of the three! Bruce: That is the warmest, one of the warmest countries to surf. Int.: What sort of accidents can happen? Bruce: One of the main dangers in surfing is your surfboard. When you fall off a wave and the wave is tumbling you under water, your board can quite easily hit you. This will generally result in an injury. You can also hit the bottom surface of the ocean, which can be sand, rocks, or coral, and all these things are something you should try to avoid. Sometimes you also have people running you over when the surf s crowded. Int.: Right. Bruce: There are some dangers. Int.: So where would you say is your favourite place to surf? Bruce: Indonesia is probably the best surf in the world. Definitely! Int.: And where are you going next? Bruce: My next trip depends on the weather. If there s good surf in Ireland, I ll go and surf in Ireland. If there s good surf in Morocco, I ll go and surf in Morocco.
