2 CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR COMPETITORS OVER THE LAST TWO WEEKENDS.. Lots of fun and Medals for all our Masters, Opens and Nippers Branch Carnivals. Read more below. Well done to all our Water Nipper competitors who had great Carnival. THANK YOU TO ALL THE WATER SAFETY, IRB CREWS AND OFFICIALS, WITHOUT YOU GIVING UP YOUR TIME OUR MEMBERS WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO COMPETE. CONGRATULATIONS to the Red Rockets who are the NSW under 19 s women s representative team at the ASRL. BOAT NEWS!! Over the last two weekends have been a weekend of R&R for our boat crews as we opted out of any carnivals and Branch Championships. Key highlights were:
3 DD s crews getting used to the conditions of Perth, training out of Fishos All Butt One caught a monster of a wave in at queensie, and then proceed to nearly lose Snel out the side of the boat when the sweep oar snapped on the last push [trough lollies - guess which oar he had] Reality Kings and All Butt One sporting the red and yellow for patrol Nick Varley has a new under 23 s team out on the water in the afternoons Squishing 6 crews under a ¾ sized tent as the double was AWOL in the Collaroy club following the nippers carnival Our 3 sweeps went around the cans 31 times over the two days (DD doing 45% of those with 14 trips) Every crew made the finals with a final medal tally - gold (3) silver (1) bronze (2) - back to back branch champs for Mudguts in mens reserves Col White that was an impressive row after watching All Butt One finish in second place, after trailing all crews significantly following a mishap at the start Red Rockets - shaking off falling out of the boat in a highside at the shorey, to win convincingly in their next race This weekend could be shaping up to be epic with forecasts of large surf thanks to a cyclone off shore! Who's who in Team Q - Introducing Bill If you haven t seen Bill Sheridan on the sand yet, you would definitely know him from his photographs! But how does a man from Redfern end up capturing the Northern Beaches boaties at their finest? It was 1976 and Bill got an invite to study antiquities (old stuff) at a university in Greece. Prior to going he took a few snaps of Australian things to do a slide show while over there (and by slide show I really do mean slides, this is prepowerpoint people). A couple of lovely German school teachers were in the audience and asked Bill to send over some slides of Australian surf carnivals (remembering this is also pre-facebook so it required a lot of faith that Bill would snap these pics and post them to Germany..must have been some lovely ladies). Back home Bill heard about a significant carnival at Collaroy and decided that was his shot (literally). Seeing a random man snapping some pics the President at the time requested the footage. Liking what he saw he kept inviting Bill back and the rest as they say is history! I would include a pic but he s always the one behind the camera! BRANCH CARNIVAL NEWS!! NIPPERS Congratulations to Queensie Nippers who participated in the Branch water & beach carnivals over the past 2 weekends. You competed in true Queensie style, with lots of enthusiasm and most of all with great sportsmanship. KEN PRIOR - Deputy President I joined the club in 1996 when my two boys joined nippers, surf clubs were new to me. Ed Riley immediately threw me a whistle, and an age managers shirt to run the under 8's. The following year I was asked to be Chairman of Junior Activities commonly referred to as "Big Nip". I did that for 3 years before passing the baton to Bert Bertrand. However in the meantime I threw a whistle and age managers shirt to Rob Daniel, he stll hasn't forgiven me! Nipper parents at the time who all helped included Barb Riley, Tim Hayes, Phil Bird, Nick Shorter, Tom Mitchell, Andrew Somerville, Baz Antella, Paul Taylor and Tony Abbott to name a few. Peter Daley and David Piper were inspirational leaders of the club. I have continued to be a patrol member on and off over the years as time permitted, learning an enormous amount from Jimmy Ashton. I look forward to contributing more to the club in an administrative role in the future. MADDIE PERKINS - Junior Club Captain For those who don t know me or haven t seen me around the club, my name is Maddie Perkins and I am exited to be the Junior Club Captain this season I ve been a proud member of Queensie for almost 10 years now and have loved every moment of being a part of the club.
